  • Today I am taking a look at the Canon FL vintage lenses! These are from the 1960's and they have a super cool and unique image with a ton of character. Have you ever heard of these lenses?

I love these lenses. They maybe aren’t the best for everything, but man when they’re good they’re REALLY good.
They’re also amazing as taking lenses for anamorphic adapters, especially the 55mm and the 85mm.

my grandpa had a set of FL lens, he game me his set so I can adapt them to my sony cinama camera for my filmmaking. he had a 35mm f 2.5, an 85 f 1.8 and the 135 mm f2.8. thies lenses look like they are brand new, like he bought them yesterday, not in the 60s. he also gave me a canon FT Ql camera in perfect condition. I am exited to create some short films using this lenses.

I bought the Canon FL 19mm in mint condition 3 years ago for 300,- I just looked up the prices for all of my vintage lenses 1 week ago and not gonna lie, I was happy when I saw that they are now at 1200,- (I got the deal of the century. :P) and now you make a video about this lens. good timing. :) back then I specifically wanted "single coated" lenses for those epic vintage lens flares, and they needed to be orange. did a lot of research, like... way too much. but ended up buying "single coated takumars" and "canon FL's". but again, I mainly film skateboarding, so all the typically cinema use cases don't apply to me. for example, for focal length, I pretty much only use between 50mm-300mm. and for anything wider always a fisheye. (very cliche, but a lot of fun. :) ) I have fisheye's from the 60s, 80s, 90s, 2000, 2010 and 2022. yeah,.... It's a lot of fun.:P right now my favorite prime lens is a "weltblick 135mm 1.8" (I think it also has 10 other names) and It's single coated. (for those epic slow motion shots) got it for 127,- and It has the most blur I've ever seen in my life.:P but whatever, your videos are always a pleasure to watch. :) 👍

That’s so cool! Love hearing what you use them for. $300 is a great price for the 19, that’s what I got mine for last year and it’s such a fun lens to use. That 135mm 1.8 sounds insane to use! How heavy is that thing?!?

I have a 50mm FL 1.8, 135 FL F3.5, 35mm FL F3.5... and definitely, they are still quite excellent, but is vintage... but not toooooo vintagey :) LOL. I did reviews on them too, and since have actually starting picking them up for shooting my pro stuff. My 35mm F3.5 is really sharp in the centre wide open, though...

I have a few FDs, and I love them, but it's true they don't have the character of the FLs. I recently got my first one. An FL 55-135mm f3.5 zoom. I love it! The flares are fun. It's quite sharp from f8 - f11. I can't focus to infinity zoomed all the way out to 55mm. All the other focal lengths will work though. And zoomed all the way in to 135mm, it shows a scratch on the front element with any aperture smaller than f11. If you zoom in at all, and open up the aperture, the bokeh is beautiful, and if you move close to the subject when zoomed out, it creates great images. And like I said the flares are fun.

Nice video celebrating these amazing FL lenses. I've had the 35 f2.5, 50 f1.4 and 135 f2.5 for 10 or so years now, in amazing condition and you're right they are built superbly well and all have amazing character. I use them on a FT QL and a recently purchased T90 so 2 cameras and a set of killer lenses for under £200. I also use them on Fuji X mirrorless cameras. I love them and I'm sure they will outlast me by several centuries!

They also make a 55mm f1.2. I have one that my grandpa bought brand new when it came out and he passed it and a 135mm down to my mom and my mom gave them to me.
The 55mm is, for all intents and purposes, basically identical to the 58mm from what I can tell. It even looks identical. But It exists as another option in that lens lineup for those interested.

I have the Canon 55 FL-F 1.2 back in 1971 I bought my first real camera, a Canon FT-QL with that 55-F1.2 from a army PX store price 125.00$., I also have a Canon 50MMF1.8 and a Canon FD 35-105mm F3.5-4.5, I have a few NON canon lenses too, but now I use them all on my Sony A6000, which my son gifted me ( with his aps-c lenses ranged from 16mm through 55-210 mm only apsc lens I don't have is the 50mm ) and I took the Sony out today, with the 55mm on it. and a 35 and 28 in my bag.
Our son has the camera now, though I have the lens, son opted for a lighter 50 F1.4 , he takes it out weekly and now develops his own film and prints, with my near the same age photo enlarger.
About tough. this camera and lens fell out of an army truck onto the road in 1972 not a chip or dent I did have to replace the lens cap and UV filter though.

I have all of the FL lenses from 28/3.5 thru 100/3.5, including a 55-135/3.5 zoom and 50/3.5 macro and FL Bellows. The only FL lens I use for my digital cameras, Canon 5D & 6D is the 50/3.5 macro and macro bellows, the others I use in my Canon FT 35mm film camera. I sold my FL 19/3.5 a few years ago after I bought a EF 20mm 2.8 USM for my Canon 5D which I use for architectural interiors. The EF 20mm/5D is a much better setup for interiors than the FL 19/3.5 & FT camera body, so even though I sold it for cheap, I do not miss it.

Actually adapting FL is not that difficult. You just need to use it's standard adapter and remove the metal pin that regulated the aperture in the lens. We have a 19mm FL so it's first hand info. I don't think the rest of the set must be that different.

    • @calebbrunkow
      @calebbrunkow  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yep! That is correct, I believe the 19, 35 2.5, 58 1.2, and 135 2.5 have that mount that requires the pin to be removed

I think most of the FL lenses are radioactive, no? Looks like they have the yellow tinted thorium coating. I feel like the two biggest turnoffs for me is radioactivity and short focus throw. I feel the Canon LTM might be better for me. Long focus throw and no thorium.
Ah, you talk about the coatings at 6:00. Presuming that these lenses have thoriated glass, then they do not have yellow coating, per se. It's just the radioactivity that has turned them yellow in time. If you want to get rid of the yellow tint, put them under UV lights.

I have the FL 50mm f1.8 that I bought at a charity sale for $10.00 and the FL 58mm f1.2 I bought for a little more. I use them on my Fuji cameras with a straight (not speedbooster) adapter. Both have a nice look. The 58mm can be a little soft wide open, but Topaz Sharpen AI or stopping down to f2.8 or f4.0 can fix that.
Here's a short video to test my new Fuji X-S20 and get my feet wet with Davinci Resolve. It was filmed with my Canon FD 24mm that I bought new in 1972 and the FL 58mm.

Unfortunately you can’t easily adapt these lenses to ef. You would need to exchange the mounts.

3:15 _"Bulbous?"_ The word you want here is "protruding," my man. (Or "protrusion.") An eyeball is bulbos. Also bulbous: a clown nose; a radome; or, you know... a _bulb._
Good video though, otherwise; I can't blame you for what No Child Left Behind did to your education!
