I Don't Know How to Feel About This - Canon FL 55mm F1.2

  • I've been curious for a while if vintage lenses can also be budget low light lenses. So I decided, hey I don't need $200, so I bought a Canon FL 55mm F1.2 lens to review. To justify the cost to my accountant I don't have, I figured at least I'll make a video justifying my spending to everyone

I have the Canon FL 58mm f1.2. It was released in 1964 and the 55mm f1.2 succeeded it in 1968. The 58mm has a second ring, allowing you to set the aperture at say, f5.6, turn the other ring to wide open and focus, then turn it and it will stop when stopped down to your chosen aperture. It can be a little fiddly.
Like you, I think I like it for video more than for stills. You are right, in some situations the bokeh looks great. In others it's a busy mess. I also have the FL 50mm f1.8 which is a great looking little lens. In addition, I have the FD 50mm f3.5 macro and the FD 50mm f1.4. The 50mm f1.4 is the sharpest of the bunch and has lovely bokeh. I have a number of other vintage lenses from Leica, Nikon and Minolta. They are all fun to shoot with.

@@erikhendroputratewal947 Overall, the Canon FD 50mm f1.4 SSC is really hard to beat. They can be had for a reasonable price. Maybe evn find one that isn't perfect and has a stuck aperture. That's how I bought mine. It took a bit to clean all the oil off of it because I ran out of my normal degreaser that I would use, but the lens cleaned up very nicey and is an absolute dream to use. Its sharp at 1.4 but at 1.8 its very, very sharp. And the bokeh is very nice and smooth. It can do some bubbles if there are strong enough light points in the background, but that's not its normal thing. Unlike other vintage lenses that default to that. The Canon 50mm f1.4 SSC is a beautiful lens that is built super solidly.
But there is one more that is cheaper yet and offers all the same things, except for the build quality. The slightly newer Canon 50mm f1.4 NFD. It was the last generation of the FD lenses. It got rid of the breach lock mount and went to a more norm mount like the Nikon F or Pentax K or any of the other major brands that had a twist and lock mount. This NFD 50mm f1.4s sell for around $40 to $65 and they look the same as the earlier SSC lenses. They just used more plastic in the lens build, but they maintained all the Super Spectra Coatings of the SSC version, just in a lighter, cheaper body.

For years I was running an old 55mm f1.2 Nikon lens adapted to my rebel t3i. I had nothing but an amazing experience, old lenses often can hold up! Great to see another upload

I saw your Lenovo workstation lens and never would’ve thought you’d also be interested in photography too, that’s dope to see we have interests that align.
I remember I got this lens at a thrift store for $20 and was hype as hell. My copy was too soft wide open for me….. then I dropped it and the rear element cracked to shit. 🥰

If you want a lens with NO vignetting, try a 645 lens. You won't find a f1.2 though... and they cost more. There are adapters for the Sony A7Rii. That is because you are using the middle of the lens, when using a standard adapter.

Glad I got recommended this; your style of presentation is really solid. Informative and funny, and moves at a solid pace. It manages to be entertaining without feeling like it's trying to mimic the cadence of other popular photography gear channels, it's more conversational. Definitely subscribing to see more!

Great video as usual, with funny, real voice-over & awesome shot to shot edits.
I might even go get one of these bad boys! 🏆

Thank you! It's for sure a unique lens, and one I'll be keeping it on my shelf for now. I've been sitting on this lens for a few months now, and really wasn't sure how to property articulate what I wanted to say so the video got really delayed. Glad to hear it turned out good in the end!

That is a low SN. In a lot of lenses the early ones were the best and original design. However, you need a long lens hood. Try construction paper first, then graduate to lens filter adapters stack up to make a hood. I paid $100 for mine. You just have to negotiate.
