Sadly, Jimi's no longer with us.
On the other hand, one could argue that Jimi showed us the way, and people like GG took that and ran with it :)

This. People always prattle on about all these various guitarists being the "greatest" simply 'cause they're household names, when guys like Guthrie can play circles around them with their eyes closed. Yeah, guys like Guthrie were no doubt inspired by all those household names, but that doesn't change the fact they've all been surpassed ages ago.

Guthrie rocks, but I want to give a big thank you to Lee, the way he interviews is just so real and refreshing to see. The questions are from heart and totally not forced. I have the attention span of a 5 year old so I can't watch videos longer than 5 minutes, but here I am 1 hour and 5 minutes into this one. These interviews captivates(no pun) me. Thank you!

Its always strange watching Guthrie on the internet. He was my teacher for 3 years and he literally changed the course of my life. I was going to go to one Uni and after seeing him at the basement followed him to another city, and changed my course just so I could be taught by him. Its weird to think without the desire to be taught by this guy I would not have the family I do, the friends I have, or be in the bands I'm in. He is a true legend, a lovely guy, and truly the greatest guitarist I have ever seen!

Hmmmm. A little bit of material avarice on his part might have given the World another EVH style household name virtuoso. Instead we have a few YT videos and a smattering of sessions spread across a handful of virtually unknown albums by a very narrow selection of obscure (to the general public) artists.
For someone of Guthrie's incredible abilities, we have remarkably few great albums.
He might be the ''Guitarist's Guitarist'', but that's like being a mailman who only delivers mail to other mailmen.

I got to hang out with Guthrie last week at the Petrucci camp. What a fantastic guy! He is music personified. He's an amazing teacher as well, and the way he communicates his ideas and concepts is just one of a kind. He had this impromptu 2am jam with a french horn player in the hotel lobby that just made my year. Such a beautiful moment. You could really tell that playing music makes him happy, and he in turn makes everyone around him happy. Such an inspiration.

The term "guitar god" tends to get thrown around very loosely these days, however, I think Guthrie is genuinely a musical god, a guitar genius. He literally can adapt to any style of playing, at any speed. Not only does he adapt, but he excels and dominates any of those styles. I particularly love when he transitions from jazzy licks, to a tasty blues lick :). So glad musicians like him exist. Gives me so much inspiration to keep practicing.

I never would've thought that he'd grow up to become such an accomplished guitarist. I wish my dad was still alive to see you now, Mr. Govan.

In rock perhaps yes, it is becoming increasingly more and more rare as hordes of new players that can't really play yet have "mastered" a technique or two and feel the need to put it on full display because in reality it's all they got. It's sad. However in classical and jazz it's rarely if ever even spoken about because it's rarely if ever an issue. People have been playing fast melodic lines for centuries, it's about time the rock community catches up! Rock on Guthrie!

Guthrie is a totally complete man when he's got the guitar in his hand. That way he communicates his heart so flawlessly, like an excited child...like a teacher, like a maestro...and an absolute master of the game. It;s ALWAYS a pleasure watching him speak as much as play. Everything he says holds much value and the way his eyes lighten up during some phrases makes you realise that it all comes from the heart. Guthrie is universal and one of a kind. Cheers n God bless!!!!!

All good points, but I think he could strike a balance between constant touring and taking the time to share his wisdom with the world via TH-cam, as long as it's lucrative. Granted, there is no rush like performing for thousands of people (I've had that chance on occasion) but I would wager that his videos reach more folks in more countries than any tour could (look at the Views for this video!) Consider his age as well - he has a lot of touring years left but it doesn't hurt for him to star thinking about his 50's and 60's. YT is much easier on the muscles and joints than touring:)

I think Guthrie is a great example of how music theory and feel can make an amazing thing when combined the right way. When I was in school theory was something that we just /had to know/ and nobody could tell us why. I never bothered with it, rebelled against it in a way, and I was just happy playing. Fast forward some years and now the things I want to play have overtaken my theory knowledge and I can no longer keep up with it. My mind wants to play phrases and my theory knowledge has no idea what they are or how to create them. If only music teachers could be like Guthrie!
Also, great interviewing by Mr. Captain, more like a hangout then the usual "tell us this, this and this"!

My early career followed such a similar trajectory it actually freaks me out a bit. The only differences are my first performance I was 6, not 5, and I got offered a place at Oxford to do English Literature, but took a "year out" to go to the Guitar Institute (all the while knowing I didn't want a year out, I wanted a lifetime out.)
I totally agree about technique and theory as well: You can't know too much, or too little. If you have knowledge and skill, but can't express yourself emotionally, that's not *because* you have knowledge and skill. They're totally separate things.
    Great interview. :)

Every guitarist who's had a much a better guitarist to borrow and play their guitar knows the "I didn't know it could sound like that" feeling that Lee is experiencing at around 42:09

    • @lmcf_gtr
      @lmcf_gtr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Karl-Anthony Towns I think you don't know your gear can sound like that because it takes another's fingers. Lee can sound great, but it's not the same because yeah, sometimes a portion (about 10-20%) of your tone is in the fingers.

    • @TheGuitarifier
      @TheGuitarifier 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@lmcf_gtr you're absolutely right. There are certain things that only years of playing can teach you. Thats one of them. The power to play the exact same notes as someone else in a COMPLETELY different way is right in your fingers.

I got the impression Lee was thinking the opposite? as guthrie wasn't playing anything particularly inspiring given the quality of guitar he had at his disposal, in the right hands those gibsons sing.

It's interesting how his speaking patterns and vocabulary is so... "similar" to how he plays guitar. Very eloquent, intelligent, and very much screams GUTHRIE with every sound.

I was so happy to discover Guthrie Govan - he has to be one of the most articulate musicians I have ever seen. Not only does he play like a true virtuoso, he can explain what it is he IS doing and is so darn articulate throughout the entire process. Oh, were there more people out there like him ..... thanks so much for posting this video!

Notice how when he picks up the Les Paul he starts playing blues licks in A?
We're all the same, really, but then, not... ;-)

I loved the tonal variations he got out of it. It had this thickness to it that the Charvel just didn't have and it sounded awesome.

I forget exactly what it's called but there's a channel on youtube with a bunch of videos of Guthrie playing to some backing tracks and he uses a bunch of different guitars than his sig like a Les Paul, 335, and maybe a strat if I remember correctly.

There are many gifted guitar players out there, some popular some relatively unknown but three who stand out in my mind, whose skills baffle me, leave me in awe. They are Alan Holdsworth rip, Shawn Lane rip and Guthrie Govan.

Completely justified and understandable, but I couldn't help noticing Captain's face as Guthrie was playing his Les Paul. I swear I could hear Captain thinking "Wow. I had no idea that guitar could do that!"
With all due respect to The Captain of course! :)
Brilliant work from Cap on the interview as well - respectful and suitably in awe of Guthrie's prowess without being gushy.
Govan is indeed the real deal...

@Renato: Indeed, so true. Guthrie is for sure one of those players where the magic truly is in his hands [and his head]. The gear he uses pretty much doesn't matter at all :)

Guthrie is the only guitar hero I can actually imagine spending an evening in the pub having a pint with him, such a lovely down to Earth guy (if anybody hasn't had the pleasure of hearing Jason Becker's Triumphant Hearts album, as well as being an astonishing feat of overcoming obstacles on Jason's part and should be a part of everybody's music collection, Guthrie contributes a solo on Rivers of Longing which is mindblowing)

I thought Guthrie was great until I heard him play on "The Raven That Refused To Sing." Then I KNEW he was great. My favorite playing by him isn't when he's ripping massively fast leads, but rather the slower stuff where his playing is just dripping with feel. Such a great player.

I wish this was more of an interview, much more of Guthrie and a lot less of The Captain - I feel as though The Captain wanted to say his bits too much, and really, we all know why we're here !!! BTW, I saw GG in 2013 (I think it was) in London - with Marco and Bryan - front row, I had a smile on my face throughout the performance :)
