I am 100% convinced that guthrie is the greatest guitarist of all time. It's insane the amount of music he would have had to listen to and absorb, and the amount of practice he would have to do in order to play the things he does at the proficiency he does. Hundreds of thousands of hours of listening.. absorbing and practicing.. at minimum. And then to have the physical dexterity to actually output all that knowledge is mind blowing.
Agreed 100%! He's literally a master of all trades when it comes to genres. Everything from metal to fusion to country to gypsy jazz, and he plays like the absolute best of each genre. He's lived and breathed music since he was three - and what's funny is that he thought everybody else was that way too. So when he got in school he was pretty surprised to realize that most people were not musicians lol.
@@stevebanning902 sure, most, but not e.g. the players on "Friday Night in San Francisco" (Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, and Paco de Lucía). Ah thank you for the correction! The sax player is a beast. Very cool that you know him. I'm honored to be that much closer in 6° of separation. On my Shawn Lane video so many people came into the comment section who knew him, including one guy who was his best friend throughout his entire life. Oh yeah - Seth just kind of hangs out in the background, keeps a very low profile. But any of those fellowship videos feature him playing and he also played on erotic cakes along with their drummer Pete Riley. It's kind of wild that this rhythm section that is in such a good jazz funk band can also turn around and kick out some of the hard rock stuff that is on his album.
I remember back when videos of Guthrie playing at clinics first became popular on TH-cam. At the time Guthrie asked people not to upload videos, because he feared it would keep people from coming to his clinics. That's the only time I would say Guthrie was flat-out wrong about something. Who would forego attending a Guthrie clinic just because they saw a video on YT? No one, of course-just the opposite, as it was terrific advertising. Those early "OMFG check out this guy!" videos are the reason Guthrie attained the level of success he enjoys today.
Very cool! I know the aristocrats were adamant about not capturing stuff on the phone during their shows - not to be jerks, but for one thing they wanted people to experience the entire show in live form, and two they wanted to make sure that what was being put out was of the highest quality. I think Guthrie probably was somewhat of that mindset as well with his clinics. Thankfully they made their way onto TH-cam and the rest was history!
Thanks so much! That is some good feedback. I tried to sprinkle around as much as I could - obviously when you include clips, some of them could be recipe for trouble with copyright and all that other stuff so I try to do the balance between using them sparingly versus overdoing them. You go to upload a half hour video and it takes like an hour and a half and then another 20 to 30 minutes for them to check if there's anything copywritten in it, and if they find a clip that has it you have to go chop it out re-upload it again watch rinse repeat until it doesn't get any claims. That's probably why you see a lot of us TH-camrs not using way too many clips. Nevertheless I appreciate your encouraging words! I will definitely try to balance them out a bit more based on that advice. I'm just starting out in this genre.
Saw them recently in Mill Valley on the Duck tour. Small club and we were at the stage edge. All three were amazing musicians and having a lot of fun. Probably one of the top 3 performances I've seen in my life. And I've seen a lot. And the band stuck around for beers.afterwards. We need more guys!
That is awesome! There in my tops too for live performances that I've seen. All three of them get up there - and they make it so darn fun! I like how they always get the crowd involved, they play really intense music - and at the same time sprinkle in the right amount of humor and showmanship. One of the best bands around today!
Thankfully, there are a lot of amazing guitarists out there, but none of them manage to instantly put a smile on my face the way that listening to GG does. The Aristocrats are easily my favourite Trio ever.
Exactly - they put out such a good vibe. It's not a bunch of showing off or anything it's just simply them playing so naturally together and getting a kick out of every moment. They are amazing live - one of the best shows I've ever been to.
No other guitarist combines all the things that make us recognize genius completely out of the box. Yes, abasi and mancuso and others have innovated in their own unique ways, but guthrie just does it all, to the best extent, especially improvisation
Aren't they great! Going from mindset to pure technique, I've never seen any other guitar books really cover it like that.... He brought the whole package. Those are priceless!
I first learned of him when I noticed him as a subscriber in Guitar Techniques. Later on TH-cam, and finally, I had the pleasure to meet him personally on a gig he gave here next to my neighborhood here in Athens. Great player, super nice guy.
You did a lot of cool stuff in that magazine, I wish Guthrie were a regular columnist for it because I would be fully subscribed if that were the case even though it's kind of expensive over here in the States. He still writes a column every so often and I had actually picked up a copy with him on the cover doing one about country bends. I was floored so I subscribed. Then I didn't see Guthrie in there for a while haha but I'll keep out an eye for any issues. That is really cool that you got to meet him! That must have been a great show too! Thank you for sharing that.
The reason why Guthrie is, in my opinion the best guitarplayer if not musician of all time is because of insane improvisational skill. He improvises at levels some wish to compose
Oh I can imagine! Brian Beller has such a freaking groove on that bass. His work with Mike Keanelly especially on that live cut "my dilemma".... Just amazing. I saw The aristocrats, and the way Brian handled the crowd was just amazing as well. Total showman all the way!
I can't believe that I hadn't heard of Guthrie until I was watching a Rick Beato video with the Matteos .... I'm so glad Rick mentioned him and really appreciate this biographical video, Thanks so much for making it 🙏 Now to immerse myself in Guthrie for the next few months 😁🤘😎
Thank you so much. Trust me, I do believe the immersion is going to last longer than a few months if you're anything like me haha. There is so much to dig into. Guthrie is like 10 people in one body. From all the crazy variation in the groups that he plays in to of course literally mastering multiple genres, it is mind-boggling. Always glad to meet a fellow Guthrie fan!! 🤘😎🤘
I remember when Guthrie worked for the magazine Guitar Techniques and even back then I always hoped he would get a platform to show his talent. I’m glad he has now because I’ve always believed he’s the best.
Thank you! Guthrie has some string bending exercises where you basically play the whole scale by playing one note, bending up to the next, been playing that note bending up to the next and so forth. It is brutal - but a great way to learn how he actually bends. He can make that guitar sing!
I don't really listen to Guthrie but he's an absolutely INSANE guitar player. Skill way beyond the comprehension of 99% of guitar players, including myself.
Thank you! I wouldn't say his music is for everybody that is for sure. However if you happen to not be familiar, I would recommend any of his work with the fellowship. That to me is the most universal stuff he's done. Thanks for your comment Johnny!
Guthrie is the best player in the world imo! He can play so many styles effortlessly and he is the only guy that plays passages that i have no clue how he just played it lol His parents are both scottish and come from just up the road from me to ha! Btw my fav Erotic Cakes song is "Uncle Skunk" Great upload Jimmy 👌👏🤘
Hey my Scottish brother Hugh! Guthrie definitely is the baddest mofo alive on the ax. Uncle skunk is such a great pic - main line reminds me of touching tongues by Steve Vai, but Guthrie takes a to a whole new level. That's right Scottish is in the blood - all of you Scots know how to play some serious guitar! Hi-5 brother always good to see you!
Good video. He really has done so many things at such a high level. I remember it was the JTC videos that introduced me to him and it was hard to believe that such a guitar player could exist.
Thanks so much - Yes his work on those JTC videos - I liken it to basically being like other albums that he has put out. There's that one track he did that sounded like hey 19 from steely Dan, as well as the Gypsy jazz track and jet black. Lots of killer tracks he is done for them.
An amazing man and musician. One the best guitarist out there even though i don't really like jazz i love his phrasing. So difficult for musicians to survive. Respect to every musician out there trying. I wish all the best to everyone.
That's what's so cool about Guthrie is that he's taking that jazz phrasing and putting it into other forms of music. So even non-Jazz fans can appreciate what he's doing.
@@guitarmeetsscience glad to make your day, um..*yourname* lol I always want to know why people subscribe to me and from where so I try to make a point of telling other creators when I do it, I figure everyone probably wants to know!
@JACKSONPRYORBENNETT I have faith that your channel will eventually become big enough that you will not have time to worry about that lol. Stay strong and stay rocking!
I didn't know that fact about Ner Ner's main melody haha. I can't unhear it now. For real, Erotic Cakes is a fantastic album. I usually don't vibe with guitar virtuoso music, but Guthrie is always the exception.
Oh yeah! I didn't realize that either until I came across the video he did in South Korea "DVD Completo". I never knew that as Ner' NER, as a kid we said nah nah... But he totally transformed the melody and as a result the song is awesome. His slide work at the end of that one too is total rare form. He's a virtuoso but his music is more universal because he has mastered so many genres.
That performance with Dizzee rascal is what exposed me to Guthrie Govan. It seemed so out of place but just left me super curious and who he was and WHY was he so good. Then i listened to Fives and I was blown away.
That performance was a great introduction! Very cool! So many layers to Guthrie -there's literally something for everybody in his playing. Fives is incredible!
Happy 2024 Jimmy always great to hear from you Hope you're doing well. Doing great here, just trying to keep busy as usual. All the best to you brother
I only found Zal after digging into some of Guthrie's interviews - also Scott Mishoe... Guthrie would bring him up a lot - so I went and checked him out and man - he's kind of like Buckethead meets Sean Lane with some Guthrie thrown in there. Guthrie was also influenced by him as well.
The thing about guitar isnt the speed picking style or sweep picking or anything like that. Its all about knowing every mode and scale that works with every cord. Once you know where everything goes THEN you can learn all the techniques to make it faster. Without it we will all be stuck at the level we are.
Definitely helps - knowing what colors you want to paint over a given progression is 90% of the battle. Being able to get around the fretboard without getting tripped up on the notes is very important.
🙏🙏 Thank you for your kind words, and I really am glad that you enjoyed it. I'm a big GG fan, so anyway to spread the word about this awesome guitarist and awesome person. Much appreciated!
Seeing as Rolling Stone totally neglected to mention Alan Holdsworth in their "250 greatest guitarists" list, it is apparent to me that there is no justice in the mainstream conscience.
Oh man if you haven't seen them you were in for a treat! I saw them in Mesa Arizona before the pandemic hit - got there early and planted myself right at the front of the stage where Guthrie was at, sat through a pretty good opening act, and then boom. All three of those guys are so damn entertaining. Afterwards - if you get a chance please pop on by and let me know how it went! I hope to catch them again whenever they swing around. Such an awesome show!
You nailed it - with that band there is something in it for everybody. They have a very high entertainment value, so even for people who may not be into more of the prog style, they put on such a damn good show that it's really hard to resist them.
Hey Bumblbesss!! Thank you kindly man. Talk about one awesome idea - nobody touches Becker when it comes to sheer inspiration. One hell of a kick ass suggestion!!!
Guthrie is a guitar player's guitarist. Mention his name to any top-tier guitarist in the industry (like Steve Vai, John Petrucci, or Tosin Abasi) and they all agree that Guthrie is one of, if not THE best guitarist out there.
Agreed - thing is Guthrie has proven to pretty much be a jack of all trades master of all.... He could pull out a metal lick then a jazz lick then a country lick and so on and all of it is as if he had played only that given genre all his life. Dude is a maniac - but doesn't act like one which is really cool. Thanks for your comment I appreciate it!
Hahaha Thank you so much! I was trying to imagine what it would look like with him working behind the counter since he actually worked at McDonald's. He just doesn't fit lol
I've enjoyed learning more about GG. One of the things I really like about him is his sense of humor! I'm curious- where did the background (underscore) music come from?
Thank you - I made it myself with a little delay and a couple random synth sounds. Then I just played randomly around the midi keyboard. Just something to add a little bit of ambience.
I found Guthrie ages ago after reading a comment from my own personal forever fave axeman, Satch. Joe said about Guthrie: "....when I hear Guthrie play, I just have the biggest smile on my face..." Pretty much says it all, from someone as pedigreed as Satriani.
Oh yeah - Joe satriani is definitely a fan of Guthrie's playing. And vice versa as well, Guthrie got a lot of influence from Joe.There are some really good clips of them up there jamming together.
15:30 I would argue that his best solo is on Drive Home. It's the most perfect guitar solo I've ever heard. The solo in Regret #9 is friggin awesome though. Even more hilarious because it's full of speed runs, giant wild bends and vibrato, and blues licks...all of which he said Steven didn't want the guitar to sound like.
I love that solo! On drive home he not only played the guitar he played the amp too! A lot of people aren't familiar with this - but if you search up DVD completo that he had done when he was in South Korea I believe, and you check out the full solo of 'Ner Ner' towards the middle of the video - he went completely so all out and over the top. He made the guitar literally sing with the slide, and just pulled out all of the stops. He was in such rare form on that one, and a lot of it reminds me of the drive home solo - but without the constraints of the studio... If you get a chance to check it out I'd be curious to see what your take on it is. I've copied it and cranked it in the car and every single time my jaw drops when I hear it.
A fun bit of recent history in the Hans Zimmer band that you didn't mention - the awesome bagpipes you hear in the Dune soundtrack is actually Guthrie.
Oh man - Guthrie can make that guitar sound like literally anything! That is insane! I would have definitely included that in there had I have known. Thank you!
@@guitarmeetsscience I don't think it's entirely him, actual bagpipes are used at least in parts. The interview I saw with Zimmer was a little vague there, but the REALLY memorable part when they are exiting the ship is definitely Guthrie.
the only bum note was when he snapped a string, i am guessing this threw his tuning out so he grabbed the slide so he can iron out the wrong notes before even hitting them, incredible lol, i always say carry on when you break a string and i do too but he is next level lol
Thank you Ken! It's funny you bring him up - he was kind enough to give me some props on a video I did for one of his competitions he had back in 2021. I still have that video up. He's a really nice dude - and his backing track was insane. That ended up on one of his albums. Great idea and great player!

It's kind of wild that this rhythm section that is in such a good jazz funk band can also turn around and kick out some of the hard rock stuff that is on his album.
This is legit the best documentary on Govan that I never knew I wanted OR needed. Now I need one for Chad Smith‘s Bombastic Meatbats! Subscribed!
That is a huge compliment Darth! Lol I'm in line for one of those meat bats as well haha. Much much appreciated 🙏
Great video thanks for making it. Would love to hear more of him playing in between the commentary. Enjoyed it! 🤙
Really great amount of information about his tlife in this video! Thanks you guys from the channel, greetings from Brazil!
Thanks so much! Hugs from the US 🤘🤘
No other guitarist combines all the things that make us recognize genius completely out of the box. Yes, abasi and mancuso and others have innovated in their own unique ways, but guthrie just does it all, to the best extent, especially improvisation
Very well said - he's got the lock on improv like nobody's business!

@@cliffirddelbridge2810ok, I mean rock guitarists. Of course jazz guitarists are great improvisers
Im so greatful he came up with those books😭 it helped me alot
That's a quote right there - he improvises at levels some wish to compose. Spot on!
top video.. so informative! I didn't know most of the stuff... Thank you!!
Thank you Will I really appreciate it! 🙏🙏
I 1st saw Beller in Chicago '93/4 with Dweezal & Amet's 1st tour.
He was incredible and held the whole band together. 🎵
Oh I can imagine! Brian Beller has such a freaking groove on that bass. His work with Mike Keanelly especially on that live cut "my dilemma".... Just amazing. I saw The aristocrats, and the way Brian handled the crowd was just amazing as well. Total showman all the way!
Saw him on youtube years ago and it was so goooood. I like his playing!
People didn't know what to make of them - the guy is from another planet in a lot of ways. Just a monster player!
Oustanding video! you did an amazing research, in my opinion he is the best guitarist in the world...
Thanks so much man! Guthrie is definitely my favorite living guitarist.
I can't believe that I hadn't heard of Guthrie until I was watching a Rick Beato video with the Matteos .... I'm so glad Rick mentioned him and really appreciate this biographical video, Thanks so much for making it 🙏
Now to immerse myself in Guthrie for the next few months 😁🤘😎
Thank you so much. Trust me, I do believe the immersion is going to last longer than a few months if you're anything like me haha. There is so much to dig into. Guthrie is like 10 people in one body. From all the crazy variation in the groups that he plays in to of course literally mastering multiple genres, it is mind-boggling. Always glad to meet a fellow Guthrie fan!! 🤘😎🤘
@@guitarmeetsscience You're absolutely right, and it's exactly what I thought immediately after I hit the send arrow 🤣
I was ACM Guildford during 2001 when Guthrie taught. Our lesson with him was 'Session styles"
Very cool - that must have been a great experience!
I remember when Guthrie worked for the magazine Guitar Techniques and even back then I always hoped he would get a platform to show his talent. I’m glad he has now because I’ve always believed he’s the best.
That's awesome you discovered him so early. He still sets the standard for guitar
@@guitarmeetsscience agreed man
Excellent video of a greats life. Thank you.
Thank you Robert stay cool my friend 🤘🤘
Thank you for the Video! Guthtrie is one of the GOATs and also one of my all time favorite string benders
Thank you! Guthrie has some string bending exercises where you basically play the whole scale by playing one note, bending up to the next, been playing that note bending up to the next and so forth. It is brutal - but a great way to learn how he actually bends. He can make that guitar sing!
Greatest guitarist around these days....watch listen n learn...😎🎸👍
You got that right Johnny 🤘🤘
I don't really listen to Guthrie but he's an absolutely INSANE guitar player. Skill way beyond the comprehension of 99% of guitar players, including myself.
Thank you! I wouldn't say his music is for everybody that is for sure. However if you happen to not be familiar, I would recommend any of his work with the fellowship. That to me is the most universal stuff he's done. Thanks for your comment Johnny!
Thanks for producing and sharing.
🙏 Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Guthrie and Marco are the coolest cats I know. They always cheer me up, doesn't matter how depressed I am.

Fantastic presentation, really well done. Long live Mr Govan.

@@guitarmeetsscience thank you again it was really wonderful
He is not my favorite guitarist, but he IS the best, alive. Does that make sense?
Totally 100% makes sense! 🤘🤘
This is a really wonderful video, thanks for making this!

@JACKSONPRYORBENNETT I have no doubt! 🤘🤘
Dude I love this video. Absolutely in love with Guthrie. I am definitely going to check out some of this other. Music
Thanks so much! There is a ton of great stuff of his out there. He is such a blast to listen to!

@@evansgate absolutely right! Nails every style - all with soul!

Completely agree with Zal, very underrated !!
@@guitarmeetsscience I first discovered him in the Alex Harvey band, faith healer
The GOAT...what else could be said?
Thanx for this duderino 😊
Haha My pleasure bro! 🤘🤘
Great research and presentation.
Thank you kindly 🙏🙏
The thing about guitar isnt the speed picking style or sweep picking or anything like that. Its all about knowing every mode and scale that works with every cord. Once you know where everything goes THEN you can learn all the techniques to make it faster. Without it we will all be stuck at the level we are.
Definitely helps - knowing what colors you want to paint over a given progression is 90% of the battle. Being able to get around the fretboard without getting tripped up on the notes is very important.
definitely one of the best modern day guitarists to this day
He is a complete beast on the axe!!!

I live stories of artists that find a way!!
Right on - guthries story is definitely an inspiring one!
Guthrie will go down as one of the greatest of all time….its just a matter of time
That time has been here for a looong while!
Seeing as Rolling Stone totally neglected to mention Alan Holdsworth in their "250 greatest guitarists" list, it is apparent to me that there is no justice in the mainstream conscience.
@C_Melvyn_James Amen!!!!
I'm going to see the aristocrats on February 17th. Cannot wait to see Guthrie in person is going to be amazing.
Such an awesome show!
legendary
I just recently heard of The Aristocrats. it's a shame that such amazing talent isn't a household name.
You nailed it - with that band there is something in it for everybody. They have a very high entertainment value, so even for people who may not be into more of the prog style, they put on such a damn good show that it's really hard to resist them.
Great Job JImmy!!!!!! I think that Jason Becker would be a great one for you to do, and Definitely well Deserved such a sad story.
Hey Bumblbesss!! Thank you kindly man. Talk about one awesome idea - nobody touches Becker when it comes to sheer inspiration. One hell of a kick ass suggestion!!!
Amazing guitarist!!!
One of the best out there!
What a great story.
Thank you so much!
As Matteo Mancuso said, Guthrie is special.
That thumbnail is a masterpiece!
Hahaha Thank you so much! I was trying to imagine what it would look like with him working behind the counter since he actually worked at McDonald's. He just doesn't fit lol

Wow!! I didnt know he did parts of Asia! He toured with the great Steve Howe. 😎

Thank you so much man - that makes my day!
I think Guthrie Govan is the most versatile and talented guitarist on the face of the planet.
Absolutely agreed!
Haha, indeed! Satch loves Guthrie's playing so much he went and borrowed Beller and Minneman XD :P @@guitarmeetsscience
@@joesatchton212yep.... The dream team!!!
That Drive Home solo is unreal.
Agreed, Drive home is melodic, technical and emotional. The best solo I've ever heard in my life. Ancestral and Regret #9 are second and third !
Great bio on a great guy👍
Thank you so much!! 🙏🙏
Guthrie has atleast 4 solos with Steven Wilson that could easily be the best of all time
Personally, I think the best of all is the one he played in Ancestral. Drive home is also good.
@@Serfo_ I agree with you, that´s my favorite solo of all time
Absolutely. The solo on Drive Home is Picasso level.
WHAT????? it was him?????
Btw at 17:04 his string broke and he manages to continue to that solo with 5 strings using a slider. What a legend.
That scene really got me - he just ran with it! By the time he did the guitar switch the whole crowd went nuts
This is cool. I always enjoy what you put out 👏🎶
Thank you Cathy!! Guthrie is my favorite of all of them!! 🤘😎🤘🎸🎸🎸
insane video!
🤘🤘 Thank you so much!!
the only bum note was when he snapped a string, i am guessing this threw his tuning out so he grabbed the slide so he can iron out the wrong notes before even hitting them, incredible lol, i always say carry on when you break a string and i do too but he is next level lol
Lol that was a total GOAT move huh? Guthrie was definitely thinking on his feet! Thanks for the comment man! 🙏🙏
Great video. 👍👍👍 Have a nice day. 😉 Greetings. Adam 😎

Thank you Ken! It's funny you bring him up - he was kind enough to give me some props on a video I did for one of his competitions he had back in 2021. I still have that video up. He's a really nice dude - and his backing track was insane. That ended up on one of his albums. Great idea and great player!
