@@bumpkinrocks Nope, I don't do sponsorship. I'll review stuff if I think it's worth reviewing. I support those who help me achieve this but that's it.
It would be great to get a free Defender 😂

Fair enough. A well looked after Series IIA skippy with a canvas soft top is a great machine for driving around rocky tracks all day BUT it is not an ideal everyday vehicle. The same goes for Series III and original Defender vehicles. Anyone who has driven a flat windscreen vehicle in the rain at night, will know about headlight dazzle from oncoming traffic; AND as someone who recently changed from driving a solid front axle tipper to one with independent front suspension, I can tell you that not having to deal with bump-steer is a blessing.

It looks like a nice vehicle. You brought up a couple of good points about how things change as we move on in life. I think it's great to preserve the old so we know where we came from and what we used. Let's not kid ourselves, if we didn't like the new stuff, we would still be driving a horse and buggy and have an operator complete our phone calls. A proper vehicle is one that does what it's designed to do efficiently and lasts. It doesn't matter what series it is or whatever. Nice review. I can't afford one, but that doesn't take away from it.

You've totally converted me. Its actually the first review on the new defender I've watched. If there's one thing that Land Rover excel at its carrying on the DNA in new vehicles. So many car companies try to go retro and fail, whereas they carry over small details that are unmistakable. I bought my first this year, an L322 Range Rover as my farm hack, and no matter what angle you look from, you see the original classic. I know they sometimes need a bit more love, but life is too short to drive something boring and dependable. Great video 👍, and thanks again for your advice on detroits, in the process of getting her ready to fire up 🙂

I was a real hater of the old defender it’s seating position was the killer for me. Yours is the only review I’ve seen that addresses that issue and made me think it’s time to properly take a look myself. The defender has been on the edge of my radar for a while now. Finally, someone who isn't bloody living in the past. As you say, heritage is important but the present is what it is. You are right. Farmers left Land Rover donkey's years ago. I remember the first Subaru Leone pickup being one of the first popular alternatives and that was a car derived pickup with 13 inch wheels or whatever they were. They certainly weren't Land Rover sized wheels with off-road tyres! Most of the people that are lamenting the loss of the old Defender are all the people who didn't bother to buy one and THAT is what really almost killed it off altogether. The other big reason is that it didn't meet modern safety criteria. The third reason is that it was too bloody old fashioned.

"But muh electronics ruin the whole thing" a little fuse or switch going faulty on the gearbox which can be fixed in 2 minuets is quite a bit better instead of taking the whole bloody thing apart and messing around with the gearbox i think.

Excellent sensible review of the practicalities. I come from a long line of RR and Disco and have watched just about every video and review of these since launch. Firstly a confession, I too was a re moaner, I moaned and said it's not a 'proper land rover' however I went to the local dealer a few months back and I was mightily impressed. It had a utilitarian feel but at the same time a level of comfort far superior to the old land rover. Will there be a crew cab pick up version in the future? My main issue is justifying the price compared to a Japanese pick up and at the moment for me the numbers don't stack up. I will be in the market next year for a new truck so definitely a vehicle I'll test drive.

I had two old 90’s. One was a V8 Efi (converted) with a roll cane etc. The next was the old Turbo D. Not TDi. This one got rolled end over end. I have a love hate relationship with the 90’s. Good to hear you're impressed with it LM! I do think those commercial variants in the solid colours do look the business, and a great replacement for the D4 in my eyes - D5 gone too far 'upmarket' for use as a workhorse. The only thing I lament about the loss of the old one, was the 'do anything' platform you could mount pretty much anything onto like MEWPs, sprayers, fire appliances etc... but like you say, the world's moved on and most organisations use dedicated vehicles for a lot of those jobs now.

Great review, and like it or not the older "Defender" would no longer comply to new car requirements. IMHO the electronics in vehicles are generally super reliable, I think my crappy old GM vehicle has about 5 of them. They have never failed and some of them won't stop you from getting home anyway. The subject of the electronics has poisoned people's minds, the usual "stuck in the desert thousands of miles from civilisation" scenario does not apply to me. You'd be pretty stuck with a series 3 with a broken halfshaft too. This generation of Defender looks like some serious effort has gone into the design, wish I was not so poverty stricken...

Did you actually get underneath the Defender? At least a couple of fancy electronic modules, ECU’s even, in areas likely to be sprayed with salty muck and occasionally submerged as well. One can only hope that the vulnerable looking wires emerging from the loom are well sealed where the enter the back of the multiplugs. These things have certainly improved over the decades but are still a potential corrosion point.

I've been fortunate enough to own Ford pickups for the last 40 years. Great video, I have to say seeing all the photos as they were being designed I didnt like the look of them, but now I've seen a few up close they are growing on me lol. I still wont swap it for my 1985 90 lol - I want to see what the Grenadier will be like.

When land rover first released the new defender I was very much of the not a real land rover opinion. then I went and looked around at one, dam land rover do still make a nice car. Cant wait for our 90 hardtop to arrive from the factory later this year, will sit perfectly next to our td5 90!
Now I realise that actually the new defender is pretty much exactly the same body style just made aerodynamic and a bit modern

Every vehicle has vast amounts of electronics these days, and have done for at least the last 25-30 years. The td5's ecu was under the drivers seat and if wading through deep water didn't f#€k it, the oil leaking though the injector wiring harness did. Could do 100,000 miles and probably not need much in repairs in the new one, now imagine that in a series 3

I have a normal 110 and spec’d it for work use, deep rubber Matt’s, material seats with covers, no fancy leather or climate in back. Best thing I’ve ever bought! All my tools and crap fit in the back easily, so comfortable to drive it’s sorted out my troublesome back, nothing drives as nice as a LR. It’s a van in the week, and a nice comfortable refined car the wk ends, saved a fortune not having a separate transit for work. And I haven’t had a single problem with it. Nothing else out there like it

Seriously interesting video, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would have a look at the commercial too. They've definitely thought it out for practical use.
However, way out of my price range. 5 years ago I bought a 2008 ranger wildtrak 3ltr turbo diesel, one owner and it was absolutely mint, never even carried anything in the tub. It's been a very good truck and is a good towing vehicle too. She's a little bit harsh on the cart springs but once loaded it's comfortable. It's always maintained and is still rust free.

    Gday Lord Muck!
Funny how only 6 hrs before you released this video I was watching your video from 4 years ago about your D4 commercial, great reviews as always thanks 🙏🏼
I’ve test drove a new 110 loved it!
Out of my price range atm so I recently bought a D4 5.0 litre V8 2011 which is absolutely fantastic 😎😎
I also own a 1999 Td5 110 Defender and a1976 2/25 Swb series 3 Petrol so I have a good LandRover selection to satisfy my needs,I can also remember when the first 90 and 110 took over the Series 3 and when the D3 took over the D2 both of which I’ve owned great cars as well!
Well done mate keep up the good work 😎😎

You're right. It's a 2021 car but with hints of it's history. I'm old enough to remember the first Discovery coming out and people slated it just like you said. I think a commercial version of this Defender will be very useful on many farms.

I was even guilty of saying im not buying anything with a computer in it. Good vid bud, iv got the 110 after having countless pickups for work and it blows them all into the wind , we have a timber contracting business so need it to tow trailers when moving kit from site to site and do up too 10 miles of forest road day in day out plus be able to go on a jolly in it and it does exactly that no bother, effortless to drive , comfortable and practical, love mine to bits 👌

I was last night surprised by what your video post would be on , but saw it was on the new defender, I thought this will be very good as I know nothing about these new ones !!!Also , when you said it would be a longer video, even better, good !!! Didn’t disappoint me 👍.Then onto the film, I like the way you do your filming format, your a “what you see, is what you get guy “ no endless crap like on some channels, as your a working guy , you were showing all the practical points & features which are so important to us working men !!!Im probably one of the worst to hide from technology, not for the reason I fear it , mainly you feel utterly powerless to fix things yourself when things go wrong, but as technology has taken over ,, the back up from the dealerships has also kept pace to help out ,Also, how often , really, is machinery breaking down ??? Not that much !!! My group of kubota excavators are all electronic & never break down !!!! I found the video very interesting, rather have a down to earth guy like yourself presenting a review, than a shiney arse suited salesman droning on to get a sale 😩😩😩. Turns out I really liked the vehicle by the end of the show, perhaps my discovery 4 maybe being cleaned up to go now ?????? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣Thanks for the video , 👍 👍👍👍

Sounds/looks like an awesome and capable vehicle. Unfortunately if you live in the states you only get the mall crawler luxury versions and dealer support only exist in large metro areas. Buying a diesel here, except in large pickups, is almost impossible.

Interesting. Would I want to hock my swb hard back land cruiser against one? Is the automatic gearbox and the extra 500kg towing capacity worth the significant additional cost? Also is there anything on the horizon for an ev variant, given the imminent demise of new diesel vehicles?
