    the algea issue, I had the same. Didn't showner before going in the tub. You could use uv lights in your setup OR buy a ozone generator. Do that 3 times a week for 30 / 60 minutes and it will stay fresh longer

      I've just used the same chemicals (very low doses) that you''d use in a hot tub. And with the chiller... there hasn't been any algae.

    Throw a couple pieces of copper tubing in in before and after you get out helps with the algae too

    An aquarium 1HP unit will easily chill that volume of water . Mine goes down to 3°c (37f). Aquarium chillers are way way cheaper and often get them second hand mine cost £90 plus a £30 pool pump filter.

      Yes... Not sure if it will cool down 100gallons while the ice barrel is outside in the sun. That's a big battle. The penguin chiller does the job even on the hottest days.

    So, how long did it take Penguin to send you a replacement? It’s 4-6 weeks as of today…how long did it take from soup to nuts?

    I'd love to see you update this review at some point after the games when the dust settles. I like the simplicity of the Penguin chiller set up. I'd be curious to your thoughts after you have used it for a while.

      I've had it for about 4 months now... Still love it! It's super easy with travel and is 100% holding my water temp at 45!! Amazing.

    How has the penguin chiller holding up? Have the ice barrel 300 and am looking at adding a chiller but can’t find any good reviews on it.

    I have the 1ph penguin and I live in Las Vegas. My cold plunge is in the garage out of the sun and I did spray foam insulation. I have no problem keeping the water at 41 year round. Chiller was $1500 ish

    Jason, thanks for the review. I’m in the same spot you were in. Love my ice barrel, hate lugging ice.
    Does the chiller need any special cover from the elements (other than freezing temps)? I am planning to have my Ice Barrel on my deck with the chiller beneath the deck.
    Are you still content with this setup overall?
    Does the UV cover still fit over the barrel with the penguin filter setup?

    I have an ice barrel and plan to order this chiller set up. In the summer where I live it’s usually in the low 80s and I keep mine outside. Does this thing struggle to keep it at 45 or will it get a little lower? 40 is ideal for me

      Keeps it at 45 no problem (currently in Dallas where the high has been hitting 90). I have it at 45 because my wife also does it and she can't handle it colder than that.     Thanks for the review not much out there on penguin… I’m in the middle of the 8 week wait and seeing yours didn’t work concerned me knowing I could get other chillers tomorrow on Amazon. Just lugged in a bunch of ice can’t wait until that’s over!

    How exactly were u freezing stuff in your freezer before? What did u use? And it froze quick enough?

      I was using 8 or so plastic bins half full and they'd pretty much freeze. I've since heard about silicone ones that work great. So, if you're interested in freezing lots of ice, check those out.

    The non-insulation of the barrel is why I instead went with the Grizzly 400 cooler and Penguin Chiller, much more economical and priced right!

    I have the same setup without the problems thankfully. Have you found that the cold water /condensation attracts bugs? I gotta find a way to keep them away.

      Man, I've never had that problem... the lid fits pretty solidly on the ice barrel so I wonder if that helps.

    Thanks for the review! How often are you changing the water? I plunge 4-6 days per week, my wife and 2 kids 3-4 times per week, and I live in CA, where water use and conservation are an issue. Thanks again!

    I wonder how far the hoses can be extended to allow the chiller to be protected in a nearby structure with available electricity with the tub outside. Leaving the chiller outside here is a no-go since it will soon be infested with insects seeking the warmth.

    Man being from south Texas where the temps get in the 100s in summer is rough as hell 😂😂… idk, i freeze a lot of ice and get it to 50s. Which I could get into the 40s … definitely going to look into a chiller , it’s a lil defeating freezing so much ice

      I have the same problem in florida, i have to freeze and rotate ice twice a day for 5 minutes of plunging. I can't put enough in it to get below 50degrees. So looking for more viable options

    Just ordered my Penguin Chiller setup for my Ice Barrel.
    At the end of your video it looks like you have bungee cords holding the chiller return bracket in place. Just curious why the bungee cords are needed.

      Hey there- I believe the bungee cord you see is one I use to keep a piece of insulation on the lid. It's just draped over the chiller return bracket until I put the lid on.

      I'm not sure... it's a good question. I would be that if it was indoors, it could run 2-3 tubs. But outdoors in the sun, that would likely overtax the unit. That's my guess.

    Damn, $2k for the chiller. I think my best bet is a large chest freezer. That seems the most affordable option unless you want to deal with freezing ice bottles.

      @@23chnge - Those are specialized industrial chillers that would need pump and controller. The only appropriate Penguin cold tub chiller is the Cold Therapy Chiller.

    It looks like it works really well for you since its a nice portable type of design. After seeing the cost for the chiller though, i would probably spend more money getting one of those tubs you see all these infuencers have. That being said im not about to spend that type of money till a long ways in the future.

      IT PROTECTS IT BUT THE RAIN CAN CAUSE MILDEW WHEN THE WATER MOISTURE OF THE INSULATION AGAINST THE PLASTIC, COULD POTENTIALLY MAKE IT LOOK DISGUSTING IN A FEW MONTHS

      Yeah, only the Cold Therapy Chiller one is designed for cold tub. The others are specialized industrial chillers most with some important deficits like inconvenient connections and lack of pump.

    Of you put a lid or cover over it, it shouldn’t get algae I think. Sunlight is what encourages algae to grow.

      @@chadmcdaniel6646 no I have the 1/2hp HP penguin and bought my own pump. Pump is plumbed in line, from a 3/4” bulkhead I installed at the bottom of the barrel. My return is also through a 3/4” bulkhead about 12” from top. My pump, chiller, filter and ozone generator are all hard plumbed in a plastic yard box off to the side.

    Nice job! My active aqua 1/2 hp is having the same issues as your penguin chiller. It can’t maintain 40° or lower as temperatures outside increase. Super bummed about that right now. Need a solution😂

      If you're getting 40 degrees, you're doing dang good. Like Forever Solvent said, anything under 50 is great. Mine is currently set at 44 degrees (compromise with my wife lol).

      @@JasonGrubb I guess I was just preconditioned to the 40° temps because during the winter that was a given. I may have to extend my time each day if my chiller can’t do the work. Be sure to give us an update on your penguin chiller and how it does with higher outdoor temperatures

    I feel like I got scammed by these guys, chiller stopped working after a couple months. Send it to them for repair and they stopped responding to me.

      I'm not still adding ice. The cooler can get the water below 40 degrees (35, I believe), but I have a wife who can't handle anything colder than 45, so I compromise for her.

      I've had a flawless experience with the company... But I do understand that shipping chillers is a challenging business. As far as I've heard, any issues have been resolved with Penguin without issues.

      @@JasonGrubb No, one of the gyms I go to that had a PC did though. Took forever to get any kind of resolution. In the end, I think you're right...shipping anything like this with sensitive components is probably challenging. It's certainly not as easy as shipping a tub of protein. LOL
      Not knocking them, but I was taken aback that the first one you got was doa. At least you shared that in the video. A lot of sponsored or compensated guys wouldn't be real about it.

      It's a tool that works to rapidly and consistently chill and circulate the water. Some people are willing/able to pay that price for the convenience and ease of use, others aren't.

      @@JasonGrubb Work your ass off for years...all of the sudden you're an "overnight success". My wife hears this all the time how "easy things must be" because she is who she is. Welp...she worked her ass off for 10+ years...just like Jason. There ARE perks to doing that... Jason's simply providing information. I don't blame him. You all did see he used to use ice...now he uses this. I would too.
      I'm skeptical of the price tag, but maybe it's worth it.
