  • Samick Sage vs Martin Locust Archery Shootout
I get a lot of emails and messages asking if there is another bow that compares to the Samick Sage. That question is always tough to answer because the Samick Sage it probably one of the best entry level traditional recurve takedown bows on the market today. Well in my search for a bow that could give the Sage a run for it's money I stumbled upon the Martin Locust recurve takedown bow. Now the Locust has been discontinued for about a year. But if you search you can still find plenty of new ones on the market for sale. In this video I do a side by side shootout of the Samick Sage vs Martin Locust. Let me know in the comments which one you like the best.

I have the Samick sage.I have shot this for about 4 years. I have other bows that are not takedown like the Howart Dream maker, and a Hunter. It is amazing how well the sage shoots so much like the others. Thanks for your you tube.

The beauty of the Recurve bow is it's one of the ultimate survival tools. BIG GAME hunting, fishing. Self defense, target shooting.. fire arrows./signaling. Many uses. And it's quiet...
Great tool for the survivalist, warrior.. Hunter, out doorsman..

Been shooting my $130 45lb VW Beetle off the shelf for years, including hunting, 3D and target tourneys. I make my own Flemish twist B50 strings, really quiet and smooth. Love it, she is my go-to bow. "...there's always that one.." every trad archer knows that one for sure! Good video, new sub follower. I like the limb decals, I'll need to hunt them down.

I would choose the Samick Sage. Looks nice, has the extra holes for accessories, and I prefer colors that blend in vs. loud coloring for hunting purposes. The only negative is a flat arrow shelf. I prefer a rounded one. Thanks for the video. Keep em coming.

Just a general tip on bow weights (because the video brought up some points that may be misleading to viewers that are not that familiar with archery, though not really a fault of Wingman115.... and I just happen to have a bit of free time to post).... if a bow is rated for (for example) 45lbs, that does not mean "you" are actually pulling 45. That weight rating is done at the optimal draw for that set of limbs. If you are shorter, you could very well be only pulling 30-35 lbs (this also explains why some people never experience stacking, they simply are not drawing to the point where it would happen), and if you are a big (read: tall) person you may actually be pulling 50 or more depending on where your draw ends up vs the optimal draw for that bow or those limbs. It is also why people need to leave ego at the door when deciding the draw weight for their bows. A short person using a heavier draw bow may actually be pulling less weight than a taller person using a bow "rated" at lower weight. This also leads into the tuning of arrows for a bow.... if Wingman115 tuned a set of arrows for his bow, and then handed the bow and arrows to me, the arrows would not fly the same for me as they do for him even though we are using the same bow and arrows. And this is because they are not actually not only tuned to each other (bow and arrow), but to the shooter as well. I am 6'4" and he is (by what he said in the video) 5'6". I would be shooting the arrows at a higher draw weight and speed than he is by virtue of my size vs his. This is not a "macho" thing, it is a physics thing. And it goes to show how there are SO many variables in archery that simple quick charts and quick answers don't really address.... though so many folks want a quick and easy answer.
I know I am late to your videos, but keep up the good work. If you have not covered this in any other video, you may want to consider it.. if you already have.... ignore. lol Cheers.

its just how far you pull it back. im like 5 6 and i draw at a 6 foot armspan.

    • @vladohavran9181
      @vladohavran9181 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It is called draw length and more than how tall you are, it depends on length of your arms. Usually, arm span is approximately equal to height, but not always. You should choose a bow by your draw length, the draw length is measured as a standard of 28 inches so if your draw length is 28 then you'll be able to pull all draw weight. If your draw length is not 28 inches then you won't be drawing the same weight as printed on your bow, if it's less you'll be drawing lower weight.

Thanks for another great review John! You brought up some excellent points between the two..
Like you , I have both these bows in the same poundage. I find that I use the Sage for hours of practice (100's of arrows) at the range since it pulls more comfortable being 62" and the Locust for 3D shoots.. the lighter mass weight & shorter overall length is a plus on long hikes. And because it's shorter, it pulls & shoots harder, great for single shots & irregular distances.

You can put a sight on the Sage as well... I'm going to go for the sage. It's ready to go out the door with any of the accessories I want to use in the future. It can be put together in the field without a tool. Easy to transport, pack, and store... Limbs are cheap and can be changed on the fly.

I just bought a SAS "Courage" and it looks similar to the Martin Locust. I just shot it yesterday in the cold and snow, and pretty windy. The SAS bow performed well. Back in the late 1990's I bought a bow for $225 from a local archery shop, and it said "Kiowa" in the limb. But, the riser was identical to the Samic "Sage". I think several companies have distributed this bow over the decades. I really liked the bow and had a lot of respect for the bow. Later, I shot some custom bows, like a Norm Johnson Blacktail, a "Black Widow", and a Chastain Custom, that were all custom bows and more expensive (the Black Widows were around 750 back in the 1990's) and they were all noticeably better in shoot ability and speed. I still would've love to own a Chastain, or Blacktail bow (or a Black Widow) but have never properly marshalled my meager resources to make that happen. In the late 1990's, I shot the Chastain bow (made in Colorado, beautiful, amazing shooting bow) at Bob's Archery in Aurora, Co and I could've bought a used one for $350...I could've stretched my resources a bit, but I didn't...sad that I didn't because I see customs are way out my range now

Yeah, I know this is an old video, but I just found it, so others will likely do the same. For me, there are 3 deciding factors. 1. Price. I'm on fixed income (retired), although I can work some part time jobs if there is something I REALLY want. 2. Like I said, I'm retired, so that equates to being an old fart, lol. I used to shoot a 45# Howett recurve, but haven't shot in years. That means I need to drop to around 25 - 30#. Also, my knees are shot so I probably won't be hiking to a hunting spot any time soon. Along with the lighter wt draw, I like the options the Samick gives for accessories. 3: I am right handed, but left eye dominate. I have always shot bows, rifles, (& pool) left handed. I know the Samick makes a left hand model.
Right now I can get the Samick Lt hand, 25# on line for about $100.00 with free shipping. So, with all that, I will go with the Samick after the 1st of the year.

This was great! Thank you so much for putting this up. I had no idea about the Martin locust. I gotta say, I like it more than the sage. I think it's because I'm a minimalist. I understand the benefits with the attachment capabilities with the samik but I like that the Martin is set it up and go. It would make me develop my own way of shooting like how I learned to throw knives. I'm definitely gonna look into it. Thanks Jon!

Just got a used Samick Sage 35# takedown, and will be comparing it with my other recurves. I got the lower poundage bow to work on my form, and hold as I was over bowed with my 50# recurve from when I had a shoulder injury and repair, it got so bad with the burning I had to quit shooting. Moses Nagant
Wolf Pack Woodcraft is not "really poor" judging by ALL the equipment he has and reviews (buys most himself). Besides, the Samick Sage is a well recommended "Starter to Intermediate level" bow with several riser draw weight options. Someone who knows what they are talking about knows that you don't start out with "high-priced Champion-level" bows when your skill level isn't close. A beginner-level wil shoot beginner level whether they use a properly tuned $150 bow or a $500 bow. If you know this (????) then you're just trolling Nagant.

Having hunted with both, I have found I like the Fleetwood EDGE better. Smoother riser, sloped and smoother limb trays. Often referred to as the SAGE-2. Both share same limb design and are interchangeable. You many want to look for the one-piece maple riser with red wood insert. Sone years come with layered Oak with Padauk riser that looks red. Both shoot great.

My Samick Sage arrives in two days. I haven't used a bow in 20 years so I'm pretty excited about un-boxing it and finding out for myself how well we are going to get along, but pretty much every review is positive with that bow; price point, accessories, appearance, power, accuracy. I think the Sage was quieter than the Locust in this comparison, too. You agree? Excellent comparison video. I'll subscribe!! Take it easy, man!

Planning on buying a recurve soon. Have looked at the survival bows...but I do not think that is the way I will go. Strongly leaning towards the Samic. It has way to many advantages over the survival style bows. Good video and very informative. Thanks.

Seems to me it might be better to have the option to install an arrow rest if one wants. That makes the Samic a better deal for me. I like Martin bows and I had a compound years ago. It was real quality.

I preferred the look of the Martin, especially the area where the riser attached to the limbs. To me it almost looked as good as a one piece bow, Both excellent value though.....

I'm completely new to archery and I know the sage is sort of considered a noob bow due to its popularity, but for me it's the quality-of-life features on the sage that edge it out at that price point. Requiring no tools and easily upgradable, as well as being a very decent bow means in reality (and especially for noobs like me) it's just great

To me the Sage is the clear winner!! With a wide range of limb weights, and being
predrilled for anything you can add. The only thing I saw that the Martin had as an advantage was the weight, but it just wasn't enough to come close to the Sage.

I’m looking at the locust pretty seriously. I just to Oregon and it’s pretty wet out here. I had to leave my bows with my dad due to the move. Do you think either of these are affected by moisture? I obviously would wipe them down after shooting, but which would be more durable in the long run?

I have a lot of bows...a lot. I really like my Bear Super Kodiak best of all. That said, my Bear SK is not a takedown. I have a PSE Coyote that I had for years for takedown needs, like riding my MC to wherever. But...but...I bought a Sage with both 35 and 45 lb limbs. It is, indeed, a great shooter. If anything comes close to the SK, it's the sage. It is my no 1 takedown.

I had a Bear "whitetail" 45/50lb. Recurve (45@27", and 50@28": it actually was hand written like that on the riser). I loved that bow. It was a sweet shooter. Not terribly zippy but I could set it up to shoot very straight and with 2 sets of catwiskers, and a rug rest, it was super quiet.

Ah it's been awhile since I've shot archery but yea it's fun. Try a bow sling on your left hand so you can shoot with an open hand. Every time I shot close handed I almost always torqued the riser differently throwing my accuracy off. Technically in OC it's illegal to shoot in your back yard. Just got to love CA!

Hello! Please tell, how many wood layers between fiberglass layers in your limbs of Samick Sage? I bought my sage (45#) in 2018, maybe it is new revision, but in my limbs there is only one basic wooden layer, but my samick polaris limb is consist of two basic layers of wood between fiberglass layers.

Nice comparo video. I like how you customized the Martin; I bet you get a lot of compliments on it. Is the Locust the same bow as the Bear Sonoma? Looks an awful lot like it. It wouldn't surprise me if the major archery companies are having their lower-end bows all made by the same factory in Asia. Anyway, that Martin is sweet. If I knew I wasn't going to use any of the hardware for accessories, I'd take that one over the Sage in a heartbeat. But the Sage is obviously hugely versatile and probably the better bet for a new archer that may want to dabble with sites and stabilizers. Both great bows.

Correct arrows will have a slightly different reaction to different bows and poundage may be just a tad different. The channel doesn’t have the budget to have different arrows for each bow so we get as close as we can. Thanks for watching.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but are you cross-dominant? Right handed, left eye dominant? I have a son who is cross-dominant and we're learning together. He's learning how to shoot, and I'm learning how to approach coaching with cross-dominant shooters.
