    I took the day off for my birthday and the son in law and I packed the Jeep up with our archery gear and headed to the local mountains to do some stump shooting with our Samick Sage takedown recurve bows. Come along and join us as we walk through the woods playing with our bows.

      First order a Flemish Twist Fast Flight string for that bad boy. It will give it a huge performance lift. Then go out and shoot that bow and wear it out! Congrats.

      I ordered a standard Dacron string this time. might try your Flemish twist next once I try the standard one. not to up-to-speed with recurve shooting. my current bow & crossbow are both compound. looking forward to trying recurve. reckon i'll get a sight, but definitely want to try instinctive too.

    I really love stumping, or roving, and enjoy watching others do it. I do it a bit differently than you guys do, though. First, I use my 35# limbs. Second, I use cheap Allen carbon arrows with flu-flu's and blunts. But when you boil it down, it's still about wandering around in the woods with stick and string. Thanks for the video.

    looks like you guys had a lot of fun! Archery was my thing growing up in rural ( read boondocks) Pennsylavania. Haven't touched a bow since 1972 when I joined the navy but I still have my Ben Pearson 55#,62" recurve I received as a Christmas present in 1968! Still has the original cat- gut string! My nephew has claimed the bow as his own so I have been eyeing the Samic for awhile now. Now that I'm retired that would be good hobby for me. Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the great vids!

    Makes sense! Stalk and shoot stumps. No permit license, unlimited harvesting. Slow and low cooking making the wood soft and tender. Entice termites to have a feast, and breed a large population. Then feed the termites to the chicks becoming healthy chickens, for a chicken dinner! Stumps to termites to chickens to dinner! LUVVING IT, definitely a prepper and bushcrafting technique. Hehehe.

    Great video Jon! I have a Samick sage takedown, and as you said, they're great fun! I remember watching a video Dave Canterbury did, a year or so ago, he used one hunting, and took down a white tail deer with it. So I guess if your skill level is high enough, it could also be used for hunting! thanks for sharing Jon, and Charlie! 👍👍

    I have a vintage Kwikee Kroger I got from my dad on a Bear Hunter Takedown and it has that same vibrating sound on every shot. It drives me nuts because the bow is silent and all I get is that rattling quiver. That Tru Glow quiver seems to be just as quiet as the bow though! Awesome video.

    Nice stuff and good shooting. I was looking at reviewing the Sage. That is one popular bow, I see them all the time at shoots. Believe it or not, I have never stump shot! I grew up in Northern Illinois, we had no stumps to shoot, it was all flat lands and open fields. Did a ton of sky shooting though.

    It's nice you guys can get out and spend time together having fun. I was going to suggest some string silencers but you already mentioned that. You may want to keep the 50 lb limbs on for bow fishing. The fiberglass fish arrows are like shooting logs and they can use the extra power to get them moving and to hit with authority. Just my 2 cents. Good shooting by the way.

    Hey I have a question, whenever I first buy this bow, or any recurved bow. Would it be ok to just start out shooting arrows that are made for compounds? or it would be a better option just to go ahead and buy the bear weather rest?

    • @pfalky2k
      @pfalky2k 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think (& I would double-check this) that compound arrows may be heavier spine. that may affect how far/fast a recurve will shoot it (faster/closer drop-off?). personally, I'd buy lighter arrows for the recurve - though these are all things I'm going to have to learn myself once my first recurve gets delivered this week. so DO NOT simply take my word for it. hope you hear from more experienced archers than me

    I got my bow a few days ago and the string really does deteriorate pretty quickly. I have been having a tough time finding decent arrows too. this archery stuff seems to be a lot of trial and error. and money.

    • @michaelcolloton6971
      @michaelcolloton6971 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Phillip Delaney I replaced the string on my Sage within a month. I can get carbon arrows for about $6 apiece all day long on eBay. And you're totally right about trial and error. However, I figure that I have way less than $250 in my Sage, which includes the bow, string, a couple dozen arrows, fletching, quiver, armguard, glove, points, the whole bit. That's pretty cheap for the pleasure I get out of it.

      @michaelcolloton6971 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Phillip Delaney I love 3 Rivers! I hope you have better luck with your string than I did with mine. It wouldn't stop stretching. I get my strings from a couple guys on eBay.

    • @phillipdelaney3315
      @phillipdelaney3315 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Colloton I just twist mine up to get the correct brace height

    • @michaelcolloton6971
      @michaelcolloton6971 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Phillip Delaney Yeah, that's the point: I had to twist it up every time before I strung the bow. I didn't want to over-twist the string, so after about 200 arrows, I gave up. My current string stopped stretching after about 100 arrows. That was almost a year ago and I may have put 10 twists in it during that time, mainly to play around with brace height...

  • @pfalky2k
    @pfalky2k 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    got to assume your son's shooting will tighten up exponentially when his bow's properly tuned. can really hear the string twang - I'm thinking that'll affect accuracy quite a bit? waiting delivery of my own 40lb Samick Sage this week & can't wait to get it up & running. probably use my Hoyt Charger as my primary bow. & do enjoy my Barnett Wildcat C5 crossbow. though I do think there's a bit more "art" to the bows. this was an enjoyable vid. (by the way, I only target shoot. 1. don't like to kill unless at absolute need or for mercy. 2. bowhunting is illegal in the UK. apparently for "humane" reasons - though chasing down wildlife & the occasional pet on horseback with a large pack of dogs is in no way cruel - go figure)

    • @Wingman115
      @Wingman115  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your right we had to tune his bow. The brace height was too close. Time to move to Canada get out of the UK before all hell breaks loose.

      Thinking about taking my Bear Sonova in to get fitted with a standard thread pitch so I can just pull the reel off of my spinning rod and stick that on there. I spool up with 50 pound Spiderwire, and I really don't see that breaking.

    You should buy a 30 - 35 lb limbs,50 is 2 strong for both of you...left hand cant shake while you shoot.

      @@Wingman115 I doubt....50 lb is way 2 strong for beginners,beside targets that you shoot at that distance is easier to aim with 30 lb or 35 lb......50 lb is more for hunting and more experienced archers....no hard feeling :)
