There is a big difference. The upright has more of a closed in boxy and tinny sound compared to the grand which has a louder, richer and warmer, sound. I have always liked the sound of both pianos but there is a certian sound from an old upright piano which I have always liked. I have never got to play a piano with that sound yet, maybe one day I will.
@@almeisam this string length has a lot to do with that and the resonance has less projection on the upright design. It perfect for old tyme saloon songs though.
It’s very interesting to hear the different qualities of each instrument. The primary tell for me was how the upright had a more concealed and boxy sound compared to the full and large sound of the grand. Especially on the higher and lower parts of the instrument, you can really tell the difference with the fullness of sound.
Part of that is because of microphone placement, how the grand is center, the upright is against a wall, etc. Though I do agree, you can hear the major differences between them but I think it would be a better video to do it "blind" for the audience where the microphone is placed wherever is most optimal for each instruments sound, and not sharing a single microphone.
Love the full range sound and looks of a grand but there's something charming and nostalgia of an old full upright piano sitting up against the wall of a home

Yes. The upright sounds more subdued and tinny. But with your playing, both sound really good. However I just discovered that I prefer the sound of a grand piano.

The strings are longer in the grand and the soundboards are probably vastly different as well, plus having the lid that opens to the side gives the grand more projection to the camera/microphone, the upright has the lid on top so the main part of the sound is going straight up.
I'd be curious to compare the upright moved away from the wall to the grand. I know it isn't necessarily the way an upright is intended to be used, but it would be interesting to hear just how much of the upright's sound is lost to the wall.
That's one terrificially fine upright piano, a real biggie, too, to hold up so well in these comparisons. Only a difference (and at that not by much) in open sonority makes the difference in the grand's favour.
I can hear that the grand piano has more volume, is placed more advantageously for accoustics, and is more sensitive / responsive to the touch. Also, the upright is badly in need of tuning...
I could be wrong and maybe it is just the louder volume of the Grand but it also sounds as if your mic is not picking up the volume accurately. But I'm guessing it's just the Grand as by its very design, is louder. And comparing 2 wonderful wooden pianos like you did is amazing. The Grand and especially that particular one, has a bit of a fuller sound almost making the Upright sound slightly tinny sometimes by comparison. Both sound amazing however and @2:25 I could not hear a difference save in volume. I'd love to see a comparison with a Baby Grand against the Upright or all three.
Sounds like there's way more reverb on the upright, like you're hearing it from down the hall, but I personally prefer that tone over the grand's more crisp sound.
the upright piano is a slightly muffled compared to the grand piano, probably because the lid is fully closed on an upright piano the grand piano lid is open just a bit in this video.
I cannot use any description that hasn't already been used. You sir are a very talented person and can bring the best out of any instrument you play. Bravo!
The comparison with this old and rather 'bad' upright is too unfair, a comparison with a good upright like his Yamaha U3 would have been far more interesting !
Due to aging, our hearing will naturally start to deteriorate, my apologies if I no longer able to discern the difference in sound between the grand piano and upright piano. However over the past few weeks of listening to your classical music, you cause an old man's mind to be more analytical, more creative, more observant and most important of all, more insightful. God bless you.❤
I can hear a huge difference, though I don’t quite know how to explain how I hear it, other than when compared to the grand, the upright has a sharper “twang” to it with a swirly chorus effect to it. I’m speaking in guitarist terms of course. I feel that the grand is more suited for this style.
I, too, was wondering how to describe the sound of the upright. You hit it perfectly with the twang and the swirly sound. It almost sounded wrong on the mid notes because of these characteristics
@@Olibaby12 the reason it sounds like that is because the strings are not sounding in unison. When you press a key on an acoustic piano you're not just hitting 1 string, but 3 and, if the piano is out of tune the strings are not tuned to the same frequency so besides the slite pitch drop you also get that corus efect🎹🎶
I'd love the free space for a Grand Piano, but my mum and dad purchased a Goddard (London) upright grand piano when I was born and gave it to me. It is about $0.04 sharp of A440 but still in tune after 50 years since initial delivery. I personally love the tone of an upright piano when it was a decent effort to begin with.
Opening the bottom panel of an upright and moving it 2 feet away from the wall or more makes it sound a lot more like a grand. Brings out a lot of the bass and the sound isn’t boxed in. Helps when your upright is on the taller side too.
What I like most of this video is the painting on the back wall left! But to answer the question: yes, even without my hearing aids I hear a big difference between the two pianos. If I could have only one I would have the grand.
Test I - IV: The grand piano has a wider range and sounds more clear, but the upright has a bit of a harpsichord vibe to it which I really like. I can't really say that one is better than the other. Test V: R.I.P. upright piano So, as with all musical instruments, what you're playing and what you're going for decides which type of the instrument is best. That said, I'm gonna pull a Dumbledore and give the upright 50 extra points for the candle holders. Upright piano wins.
Huge difference. Full and deep versus somewhat shallow and tinny... although the black upright with the open front that you play often sounds wonderful.
Have you made a video about Equal Temperament versus Well Temperament? I have seen other pianists do that, and it's really important. It turns out that Equal Temperament doesn't really work well for performing pieces written before the twentieth century.
What really surprised me was seeing comparison videos that used the Thomas Young Well Temperament from 1799 for music from the Romantic era versus hearing the same music on a piano tuned to Equal Temperament. The results? The piano tuned to Well Temperament had more sonic and expressive possibilities, while the piano tuned to Equal Temperament sounded stiff and subdued.

Definite volume difference. I have just started playing the piano but I have picked up the differences in sound. Some pianos are great for ragtime but don't have that quality for classical. We have a nice parlor grand but I like our Yamaha p515 better for numerous reasons.
Yes, even in recorded quality. If in person it would be more obvious since you could feel the resonance and here the frequencies (high and low) lopped off in recordings. But a good musician makes it more difficult. This shows more about your skill than the pianos.
The difference is quite important. The grand piano sounds bigger But anyway, wished that you would play longer whatever piano you play mister. Always a pleasure to listen to it
Well, yes, I hear the difference. But, of course the piano sound is coming through your recording, to TH-cam servers, back out to our cell phone speakers :) your presentations are awesome.

Abraço!
The casual listener couldn't tell, but pretty clear difference to this one time piano tuner's ear. Uprights (particularly spinets) are a tuner's nightmare. No matter how hard one works, even a good upright can never sound as good as a good grand or be as easy to tune. The physical mechanics and mechanisms are different in many ways for good reasons, but as different maybe as a reed harmonium and a pipe organ. Great demonstration here.
I agree with Dave Nature Productions comment. Upright sounds "boxy". Contained sound. The baby grand, especially when you opened it up, sounded "free". The acoustics sound more alive, open and orchestrated. Well played!
I think a fairer test would have been the grand vs your modern upright. Two pianos in good condition. That said I loved the sound of the Beethoven sonata 118 on the upright. Had a bit of an old silent movie vibe to it!
A potência do gran piano é incomparável.
Perhaps some of the difference is because of microphone placement. The difference in tone from the upright is larger than I would have expected if I was sitting in the room. Also the change in volume between the two pianos really underscores the difference. Perhaps if the audio was adjusted so the volume was the same for each piano, a more accurate comparison could be made.
The grand one is new so it is still in a perfect tuning, while the upright it is not. Also, it is logical for the sound of the grand to be much louder than the sound of the upright by using the same microphone from the same distance to record them. It is like listening to music from one speaker, compared to many speakers. Many speakers will spread the sound better and clearer to the room. It's just physics 😍
The upright is more quiet, has a more metallic sound while the grand is more cleaner and nicer, if i would pick a piano for a performance, i would pick a grand but if you ask me to pick a piano for my home to practice, i’ll pick the upright not because it sounds special, but because my house cant fit a grand
I would describe the sound of the upright as slightly muffled, but I believe the mic is better placed for the grand and less so for the the upright. The grand projects toward the camera, no doubt with assistance from the large lid. The upright is projecting upward from the smaller open lid and the rear. If the mic were above the upright we would hear a significantly better sound.
There's a slight tinny sound from the upright possibly due to the boxy narrow construction and string layout whereas the grand is wider and flatter with a more open layout allowing the sound to spread out. Compare them to the harpsichord and spinet(?) pianos.
The bench on the grand piano also is better, the stool on the upright makes a clicking noise when playing the Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto. This also shows how important is to play various pieces when trying out musical equipment!
Can we take a moment to talk about this mans dedication to the joke by getting a painting of himself staring into your soul while playing the piano

Part of the tinny saloon sound comes from hard hammers. Most grands are taken care of better than the common upright.

Oh, quanto você pode nos surpreender! Você é o talento do mundo. Você está simplesmente louco !!!
I prefer the upright piano because of the unique sound
I agree with Dave Nature Productions comment. Upright sounds "boxy". Contained sound. The baby grand, especially when you opened it up, sounded "free". The acoustics sound more alive, open and orchestrated.
Well played!
I think a fairer test would have been the grand vs your modern upright. Two pianos in good condition.
That said I loved the sound of the Beethoven sonata 118 on the upright. Had a bit of an old silent movie vibe to it!
The difference is so big that it's like you are playing 2 different instruments . it's incredible .
A potência do gran piano é incomparável.
Perhaps some of the difference is because of microphone placement. The difference in tone from the upright is larger than I would have expected if I was sitting in the room. Also the change in volume between the two pianos really underscores the difference. Perhaps if the audio was adjusted so the volume was the same for each piano, a more accurate comparison could be made.
didn't expect this much of an difference. the Grand Piano just sounds so much more refined/polished
I think it is a little louder.
Yea you wouldn't say that irl
dude's looking at the camera just to make sure we're enjoying the melodies from a piano like yeag we are indeed thoroughly enjoying it :)
Yes I can hear the difference 😂. Great video anyways.
Honestly would love to be this guy’s neighbor
The grand one is new so it is still in a perfect tuning, while the upright it is not.
Also, it is logical for the sound of the grand to be much louder than the sound of the upright by using the same microphone from the same distance to record them.
It is like listening to music from one speaker, compared to many speakers.
Many speakers will spread the sound better and clearer to the room.
It's just physics 😍
The difference is probably notisable in person🎹🎶
Obrigado Vinheteiro. Sempre quis saber essa diferença. Muito nítida.
Can't help but dig the attack of the mid-upper range on the uprights, makes me feel like i'm in an old west saloon every time.
The bench on the grand piano also is better, the stool on the upright makes a clicking noise when playing the Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto.
This also shows how important is to play various pieces when trying out musical equipment!
It’s the position of the mic in the room. Very very clearly.
