    It turned out nice, but I have a couple of suggestions to you. Do not sandblast brass, clean it with degreaser and then with acid to get rid of the corrosion/oxidation, and then polish it - you'll get a much nicer result. Before resoldering you should take the parts completely apart, clean the soldering areas thoroughly, remove all the old tin, and then resolder the parts together again with new tin. I could see you were struggling to make the tin flow as it should, and that's because of contamination with impurities from the old tin, and be aware of the heat - too much heat and you'll burn the flux.

    Many happy memories. I'd suggest to take enough time for the head to preheat well. Less sooty. I found anyway. On one trip a neighbour gave a bottle of very pure kerosene that he used for cleaning photo copiers, I think. Man, that burned beautifully! Bright blue flames. I admire your loving care of this restoration.

    A really nice piece of history that has come back to tell stories about life as it once was. The cleanup was well done, good old Brasso, used by many a man to polish up the brass, of course back in the day they probably didn't have a polishing wheel to help with the shining. Thanks for sharing this video with us and please remember that this Texan watches you work.

    Does the riser pipe have an open connection to the tank? Or is there some sort of cotton filter in there?
    Good job

    • @johnrhodes3350
      @johnrhodes3350 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it's open.. But the straight up tube on Tilley lamps have a roll of brass wire mesh inside. Not as a filter though. Being metal it warms up with the tube and so the greater surface area increases vaporization of the paraffin. That shouldn't be necessary here since the burner head has those loops of tubing at the hot end, exactly for the purpose of vaporization.
      It would be interesting to experiment, but I don't think it would hurt any if you put a roll of steel mesh in the tube or even a ball of coarse wire wool. Good luck

    you started with a primus in excellent condition to begin with; sorry that you sandblasted it, and third your video is too slow; I played it on 2x and still looked slow.

      Thank you for the comment. I feel each creator on TH-cam has there own way of recording and editing, We prefer detailed views that show the majority off what we do, not just highlights. We have done several polls in the past asking our subscribers what length videos they prefer and 90% asked for videos longer than 10 minutes.

      It's how I got it from the metal recycling yard, the video and video editing made it look easy. There is a lot going on behind the scenes. Once you restore your own items, you will realize. Then try and video your restoration and do the video editing. You tend to appreciate videos like these more when you realize the effort going into it.
