My mother had one back in the 1960s, we never used alcohol to preheat the vaporising tubes or manifold, we pumped it until some raw kerosene squirted out of the jet, and pooled in the tray below, when we have enough kerosene pooled in the tray, we let the pressure out so as not to overflow the tray, we then light it with a match and let it preheat tubes, after about a minute or so, we pressurise it and the stove starts roaring giving out nice mostly blue flames with little yellow unburnt fuel vapours. Word of warning they can generate carbon monoxide so always use them in ventilated space. If you do not have methylated spirit, you do not really need it as kerosene would also do the job but it makes more soot and carbon deposits.
Great video! I bought a reproduction of one of the these but haven't fired it up yet. Your video makes it clear how I can do this. It works a bit like my old trusty MSR expedition stove. Love the roar : )
Thanks Jack! I bought a Parascene Pack away stove from ebay £20, in a nice red tin(no rust) it holds pressure, roarer, came with little meths tin, spanner and proper windshield, No pricker but no worries because you can still buy them. I couldn't resist it at that price, I'm guessing its about 1960 ish. Now I have your instructions I'm confident I can use it to make a brew.
You can control the heat too with letting the pressure out, there fantastic, boils water in no time, works better with altitude, the Everest expedition used the travelling one, well proved itself 👍 ❤ love em, cooking on a blow lamp, nice blue flame 😊
I miss this stove.. in Egypt where I'm from almost every home got one no matter how rich or poor they're.. even though we got modern stoves we still use it for heating the rooms in winter.. and sometimes we cook on it instead of going to the kitchen 😅 ... Well the last 15 or 20 years no one is doing it no longer.. I still sleep on his sound everyday but it's recorded on my phone ❤
Years ago, I worked in an isolated house with no electricity or gas. The cooking means was a primus range cooker with four rings and an oven, I have never seen one since, I wondered if you have seen one. I would like to know if you or any of your subscribers have. Regards, Peter Allen
I love your enthusiasm , i have 3 of these, 2 are "COMPANION " brand, and are complete, one needs a pump washer, and has department of defence stamp on the underside of the tank, the third one is a BAT brand made in the GDR, it has no legs, you can see where they had been solder on. Tony, Australia.
I have seen that some of these stoves have a wick placed on the inside, I assumed that it is so that the fuel rises up to the preheated tube due to the capillary effect and when it finds the hot tube it vaporizes and by increasing the pressure it looks for the natural outlet that is through the mouthpiece. But in this case it does not use a wick, I suppose it takes advantage of the preheating of the normal benzine vapors.
Just a different market now I guess have lighter/ more convenient stoves specially hiking, I'd probably prefer gas if I didn't like these plus small gas cylinders and pretty dear
If the air screw is closed while priming the tank will increase in pressure while the burner is not hot enough yet to vaporize the fuel so liquid fuel will come out of the jet and burn with smoke and soot.
Fankx a lot 4 all the info old boy cause my dear bro gave me a Swedish 210 to have a look at n I think your video will help me not to burn myself so again my friend fank Q👌
Many thanks for the very informative video. Which paraffin fuel you're using? Is it the same ad gasoline? How many types of fuel can be used in such stoves? Thanks 👌
Never use petrol or gasoline it will end very badly indeed. Use lamp oil (parrafin or Kerosene) you can get better grades of parraffin that smells better and smokes less but it will work on cheap heating oil.
We had this in our house and I have lit 50 years ago. We used kerosene oil to burn. That stove pin and valve are still in my memory....that pin will break or turn to a side after usage. So we have to keep stock always...it used to come in a pack of 3. OMG....after how many years, I am seeing this...
Hi Jack. Thank you for a wonderful video. I have a Primus stove in the attic and would love to have it working again. I’m wondering is the service kit the same or will I need to know the exact model no. Also I have a kerosene Primus heater with a chrome dome is it possible to get service parts for this. And one more thing Jack do you have a Primus blow torch and maybe you could do a video sometime with it. Kindest regards Pat.
I used one of those in my childhood. Commonly used in that era. But we used kerosene instead. Using paraffin oil doesn't " plug up" the system? I'm intending to buy one " just in case". Everything is electric in this place. Power out, no way to cook or heat up the apartment. Thank you!
What causes a stove to light when pumped, but slowly the flame dies down afterwards without opening the screw or letting out trapped air,it's as if it's got a leak somewhere

Sir, I have a chinese made stove similar to the one you have. After lighting it for about 5 minutes, the kerosene starts to leak out of the joint where the spirit cup is and also starts to burn as it is hot. Do have any idea of what could be casing it..?
If it is the smaller of the two stoves (Optimus 96) then it may need a new lead washer which is visible when you remove the vapourising tube. If it is the larger type of stove then you may need to replace the two burner washers (one either side of the spirit cup). These washers will need to be heatproof.

Is this cheaper than camping gaz cartridges? I have a single burner camping gaz stove for when the electricity goes out, but the cartridges in 2023 are not cheap a £2 cartridge burns for about 2 hours.
Primus means ‘first’ in latin. They took the name because they invented the system where you preheat the heater and the fuel is ignited as a gas rather than a liquid. This massively increased efficiency and economy and also meant a much cleaner burn with less soot. Before Primus stoves burnt kerosene in liquid form.

If the air screw is closed while priming the tank will increase in pressure while the burner is not hot enough yet to vaporize the fuel so liquid fuel will come out of the jet and burn with smoke and soot.
