I know people always market these type of drums (more compact/portable set ups) as being good for beginners and children, but really they're good for just about any use. They make for nice bare bones practice kits or actual gigging kits. Jazz kits are sized smaller than the standard rock oriented drum kits to begin with. They can still pack quite a punch and depending on your tuning skills, drum heads, cymbals and mic setup, you can get a sound pretty close to the bigger kits.
Great comment! I was just going to ask if this would be a good pocket kit for experienced drummers like myself. I’m looking for a small, but durable kit.
I have had this kit for one year-and I still love it!! Very portable-sounds great-and quite sturdy for a budget kit. The stock heads and cymbals will be the first things replaced if you are an experienced drummer....I put on Evans G2 clear on the toms and a coated G2 on the snare. The bass head is stock except for a Remo Falam Patch. Then I added some Evans dampening rings on the toms. I do play gigs on it-and my band plays Surf Rock-loud!!! It takes a beating from me and still keeps going....Highly recommended for a beginner or a pro looking for a good low-cost set.
I'm not even a drummer and I bought this kit based on this promo. Upgrades Paiste PST3 cymbal set $300 au, Mapex 18 inch kick lift kit $50 au, Evans remad reso and evans emad batter for the kick $180au, Evans Genera dry 13inch snare skin $36au. The rest of the skins are adequate for now. $1151 for a pretty good house kit in my jam room.
Do you work or learn there? Though they could screw up a free meal, it’s not your property though I’m sure you made it sound better than they thought was possible.
I have this very same kit, and I'm almost 100% sure that the one in the video is tuned in octaves, taking F as the base note. If you wanna try it with yours, tune the bass to F1, floor tom F2, high tom F3. All three don't need higher or lower tuning for the reso heads. Snare, though, is F3 (like the high tom) but with the reso head tuned a tad higher than the batter head. Just did this with my kit and sounds exactly the same as the one in the video, using stock heads. Love it, by the way.
I have this exact kit, and I tell ya it is great, great, GREAT for the money! The finish is gorgeous up close and in person! I kept the stock resonant heads on the toms, bass drum and snare drum and replaced the tom batters with clear ambassadors, coated ambassador for the snare batter, and a powerstroke 3 for the bass batter, and these drums sound awesome! They have a short-to-medium sustain that remind me of older kits from the 50s and 60s that had reinforcing rings, so if you want a fairly vintage sound these are great for achieving that! And don' let the bass drum's shallower depth fool you, this thing is a mini cannon! With the powerstroke I don't need any muffling and no port hole. To my ears, it's a perfect blend of punch and boom for an 18", and the smaller size is perfect for a tiny stage where space is limited. The only reason I give it four out of five stars has nothing to do with the drums themselves, but the hardware: It doesn't come with a bass drum lift which would be ideal for getting a more focused, punchy sound from the drum, and if you're a taller person like me (6'2"), then the floor tom legs are not going to be long enough to accommodate your height; they need to be at least three inches longer, IMO. Clearly this kit was designed for someone between four and five and-a-half feet tall. These two problems are an easy fix, but a few extra bucks are going to have to be invested. All around though, with these upgrades, this really is an excellent kit, and it's been a joy to play and gig with!
I have to update my first comment. I ended up selling this kit for an awesome better value: The Tama Club Jam four-piece. The Roadshow's wraps became warped on every shell and started to peel off at the seams, plus I never was able to get the bass drum to stay completely stable without removing the rack tom. I didn't keep a cymbal on it, so there was an uneven distribution of weight and the BD always wanted to rock and lean to the left. I got a Dixson lift for the bass but I'll never buy one of those again, it didn't keep the drum from moving, as it had no way to be secured to the shell; the drum still wanted to lean. Honestly, as with the floor tom legs, the bass legs and spurs could've been a couple of inches longer too, it might've really helped the stability issue. Hardware problems aside, though, they still sounded amazing;. I was particularly sad to let the snare go!
Just got this for Christmas, it is my first kit. I have played on nice ones at school, but for the price, this thing is amazing. All you need is a deck of cards and moongels and to flip the Hi-Hats, and this thing sounds amazing.
@@acutemadness my school has some better kits than id ever be able to afford. Lol. 6 piece wine red tama imperialstar with All Zildjian A Custom Cymbals and another 6 pice Matte black mapex kit

If they'd put mics on it, he'd have made it sound even more amazing. Maybe that's why they didn't; it might've cut into the sales of higher priced kits if it sounded too good.
Just ordered 1 of these exact kits in the same color about 2 weeks ago from Guitar Center...Going to be using it as a primary kit for unplugged/acoustic gigs and parties where my regular large Pearl EXR custom kit would be much too big and loud...Can't wait to get it...I also added an additional boom cymbal stand to it as well ...
LOVE using 4 piece drum kits for Jazz and also acoustic, singer/songwriter, soft rock and stuff like that! It's nice to play a full kit, that still feels sonically appropriate! Plus, you can easily accessorize a small kit, adding bells, blocks, tambourine, and additional cymbals, like splashes!
BASS MARINO I just ordered mine and its here Friday. any tips on setup please to get it to sound as good as his did? I have never owned or set up one and terrified I won't get it to sound the way it should info please. thanks
I had this kit, and the hi-hat & crash would loosen so easy. The hi-hat pedal was so weak as well. The top hi-hat would lose its place and would be a lot higher when I step and let go of the pedal. The drums sound great, but in my experience, this set has crappy hi-hat and crash stands.
Easiest way to get a naturally "dry" sound, is use a kit with "natural" compression! So yeah take a small kit, not too small, I'd recommend this one, put coated G2 heads on it, and tune the toms, ALMOST to a wrinkle!
Could you please tell me Nick's height, so I can figure out if these drums can reach the desirable height for me? I'm 1,78m nad I have my legs parallel to the ground.
Lil Dac2 - I'm a jazz player - I've been looking for a more portable kit than my Ludwig kit (14 x 20 bass, 8 x 12 and 14 x 14 toms) - I checked out the Sonor Martini and the Ludwig Breakbeat - but I really did not like the smaller (14", 16") "bass" drum sound at all. This kit is perfect - the 12 x 18 bass gives a true bass sound, and for most gigs, I remove the front bass head and stack the shell tom and my 3 x 13 snare in the bass drum (with some padding of course) and carry all in the bass drum case. If you remove the lower head of the floor tom you can stack all 3 in the bass drum. The shells are nice and live, but you will want to replace drum heads with better quality, and of course use better cymbals. I installed internal tone dampers in the snare and toms, and use moon gel as well to dry the sound when I don't want it to be so ringy. I use my Iron Cobra bass pedal and Ludwig hi-hat instead of the Pearl hardware. But it can be made into a very professional sounding and easily portable kit that will sound super - given the right heads, careful tuning, etc. - especially for jazz. If you tune it well and play it well, it gives back nicely. To ramp it up for rock. tune a little lower and mic the kit - you'll blow the roof off any room - I hope you enjoy this kit as much as I have.

Sounds like you're enjoying it - as are your listeners, I'm sure.
