    Cigarettes, especially filtered kind, left on the indentations in some ashtrays, more often the ones made of glass, will burn down. That will shift the balance of the still burning portion to where it falls to the surface below. My father was a lifetime smoker and ruined many of my mother's table cloths in the 1950s. You made the magic happen again, Trena. The table turned out beautifully. I can imagine how proud your father must be of your artistic ability. We do enjoy watching you make the old, tired pieces look amazing. Thank you for sharing, and thank Shopdog for the high approval rating. Love, Dave & Amy in soggy North Carolina.

    I love your beautiful garden! My precious daughter in law dreams of having a garden like that! I sure hope her dream comes true one day. Your property just seems so peaceful. A place to not only restore furniture, but to restore one’s soul. When my son was just a kid, I’d give him a gummy bear vitamin every morning, when we moved, the dining table got flipped and there was at least 70 gummy
    bear vitamins in the tracks of our table. Ummmm.

    I am very, very, very glad you have this channel to share this with us!!! I would not have accepted the job should it have knocked on my door!! I would have told them that when they allowed smoking materials to ruin the table top, you decided it was not worth preserving, therefore it is not now worth my restoring!! You did an amazing job!! Congratulations!! I am extremely glad you recorded it for us to see!! THANK YOU!!!

    • @jdxx59
      @jdxx59 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It may have been ‘acquired’ in that condition. My parents were both smokers and would often light a cigarette and leave it in the ashtray. They could easily fall out and continue to burn where they lay. But nowadays cigarettes are so extremely expensive (well they are here in Australia) that a smoker would never put one down and walk away from it. It stays in their hand till it’s gone! The Australian government started a very strong anti smoking campaign about 40 years ago now and it is working, but still far too many people take up the highly addicted habit. And with the cost of them they are a commodity that is like gold and worth stealing to get. So crime has risen related to cigarette theft.

    That table turned out beautifully -- reminds me of the "golden oak" furniture from the late 1970s and 1980s that was all the rage when we first got married. We don't have much any more, as our tastes gravitated towards maple, cherry, and walnut, but seeing it always brings back fond memories.

    Krud Kutter is great--I use it all the time for antique sewing machine and cabinet restration. The fashion in the late 19th/early 20th century was to use a dark grain filler on oak to emphasize the grain patterns--especially effective on quarter-sawn oak.
    I agree that Minwax stains have but a pinch of pigment in a can.
    I love grain painting areas of lost veneer and reproduced ornamental trim.
    Great save of a lovely piece! I'd like to see it on its legs, too.

    that is a transformation to say the least.... i live in maine on a fixed income... and retired. so as i do agree with you about minwax being a poor quality product... i do use it in my re furbishing of furnitures. it works for me... i dont have the space/ equipt you do. i working literally in my dining room, so i do what i can...i use minwax , then sand with a dry/wet sandppr. then i use poly for a top coat... 3/4 coats with sanding betwn coats. then i use car wax and buff the hell out of it. my results are very pleasing considering what i have to work with. and yes i clean house every wk!!!!! it can be overwelming at times.. but i do with what i have to work with... i live in town on .14 acers. and 15 ft betwn houses. so no room for even building a shed for a work space outside the house . so i envy anyone who can have the space to have a work shop on any kind... great job as always trena!!!!! keep them coming... you are very fortunate to have such a gorgeous home.
