The bit is spinning parallel to the work at extremely high RPM, so the piece is going to experience the same angles of attack from the cutters regardless of its orientation to the spindle path. It strikes me as dissimilar to planes or saws that have a fixed orientation relative to the grain.
You ARE a woodworker. You figure out your own designs, program you CNC, figure out the whole process of building your absolutely beautiful furniture. Using modern tools to get it done more efficiently and more accurately doesn't disqualify anyone as a woodworker. It only raises the upper limit of what they can do. Those that say using modern tools means you're not a woodworker I would argue are not woodworkers themselves because they are first and foremost gatekeepers, and very unsuccessful ones at that. I'm trying to start a woodshop myself and I watch your videos to learn. You make amazing pieces, you show your mistakes and how you fix them. You never pretend to be perfect and don't claim to be better than anyone. You're not only a masterful woodworker, you're an amazing teacher too.

I don’t necessarily think the use of Shaper and CNC is what bothers most TH-cam watchers. I’m sure it’s that the content makers have to mention it every time… at least a couple times per video. Like a, “Look, I know some of you hate this but deal with it. I have one.” Every time it’s used. Just use it. No, “Look what I’m using” announcement is necessary. Although, those screaming about it is interaction, algorithm, etc… so, I get it… stoke that.

your comments about woodworking are spot-on. as a knitter, there's more drama about almost this same thing than you would expect. to me, there's a difference between "hand-made" and "hand-knit"; if you knit the thing on knitting needles, it's hand-knit; if you made the thing while operating a knitting machine, it's still hand-made. yes, one is quicker, but they're both intensive skills that require a lot of work from a human craftsperson. and they're both WORLDS different from anything made industrially. i feel like using a cnc isn't "cheating" the same way that using a knitting machine isn't cheating. it's your craft, it makes you happy, and at the end of the day YOU still made it. edit: wife was right

Looks like a size 14 needle/H hook." As a knitter and crocheter, my friend and I came up with the term "Yarn Bender". Because only knitters and crocheters know the difference between the two.
The wife was right. This is an absolutely beautiful piece of furniture. I have taken somewhat of the same idea/model from Wayfair about a year ago and am still working on it. I would love a CNC but don't have the room for it in my 1 car garage/workshop. Watching you build the top portion with the concealed dados, really helped me decide how the top portion needs/would work best to be put together. I love watching your channel and the inspiration you give someone like me that learned to work with power tools before hand tools. Looking forward to the next build!

haven't finished the video yet, but as a huge enthusiast of Mid Century Modern architecture and furniture, calling that piece an authentic McCobb would be like calling a cybertruck a classic Carroll Shelby design in car terms. Or in tattoo terms, calling Irezumi pieces classic American. You're 100% correct that it's a fraudulent listing. (not that any of these designs are bad designs, they're just not in the same design "family".) Edit: your wife was right. :)

Wife was right. I learned 18th century antique furniture restoration as an apprentice for ten years. The question always in my mind, was it ok to use a table saw? In my reading one renowned 20th century carpenter said you can use what ever technology but never leave machine marks. I took that as great advice and made it my goal in creating.

Recently came across your channel and I must say, it all seems slightly familiar. You, of course are much more skillful, successful and entertaining than I, but I started out my wood working adventure with Shou Sugi Ban ( I simply called it burnt cedar effect because I didn't know it had a real name), moved on to fractal burning, epoxy, laser etching, glass etching and then and only then, I bought my first decent table saw. As I have been on this journey for the past few years I have also started dabbling into CNC. I do this solely as a hobby with a failing business price tag and have no regrets. Seeing your creations has given me more ideas and I am happy to learn from someone else who might not know when to be satisfied with their current knowledge. My one request, more skulls, lol.
The wife was right. I have to say beautiful. You dont always have to go back to a original idea but can recreate something to a higher level of quality. Second as a fellow creative but in sewing and other areas. Going the simple route is seamingly dull, not quality wanting to present and could be less of a quality piece in the creator's mind... but in the end the one who needs to like it knows what the one they love made them something with their time and energy that they will use is more precious and personal than just picking something from store as it has you in it... at least a tiny piece. For some of us making something special is a love language and sharing our talents... but contanstantly learning and griwing is just as important. Wife was right-but then again, you spiced it up with those kickin doors (right choice to redo), the handmade pulls, the black finish, and the new tools! My grandfather and great grandfather worked through the 20th century making furniture by hand, and would have never turned their noses up at a tool to help you get the job done with less time and greater accuracy. Only advice I have is to sneak one flame or skull, even on the back to capture your vibe! Yanni? 😅🎉😂
That style has been ripped off for years, particularly from Japan/China, can even find them on amazon and usually labelled as Mingei (民藝) which is a Japanese term that translates to "folk craft" or "folk art.". Loved your take on it and dare I say too, your wife was right!
Yeah, I suspect the "Mingei" label is more about what you display on this rather than the style of furniture. Consensus seems to be that it's derived from Chinese style.

First time viewer. I loved the commentary about the project as it was being built. I can't do a fraction of work of building anything, but I can appreciate the craftsmanship and talent. The final was awesome about the wife's reaction. I thought the finished product is very good. It's professional built, looks awesome and it stands as good or better than the original.
Found it ( living room furniture, book cases section )- it's very similar in style, but it's clearly not the same piece- different wood, different finish, different shape legs, different number of drawers, different shelves.
something to help with the drawer pull design (which I think is really sleek, and because this is something in your home you might recreate) add a round-over or a chamfer on the inside of the purple heart where it mates with the walnut. When you reach into the mortice in the walnut the purple hart having that groove in the back will give you a little bit more to grab onto.
Wonderful work, beautiful build, well done. And sure that black color would be perfect to go with my home office furniture, a perfect match. However the wife would have preferred a golden oak color lol.

I also agree with sometimes the buying the top end tool is the way to go off the bat. I personally have run through about $500 worth of cheap of the cheap palm sanders. I am still finding them randomly hanging out. then I got the standard dewalt (used) and ran that until it needed a magic spell to get it to start.finally I decided to try the Festool entry level sander ($250) the budget tool of their brand with no frills and oh how I love using it. I hated sanding then suddenly I was looking for things to sand for hours 😋

Love watching and listening to you. I totally agree with the ocd thing. If there’s a difficult way to do something, why not?! And if it takes 2,5 times longer, the longer the better. I sew and paint, not at the same time. When I find a flaw, I give it to a special friend.
I have been a public school woodshop teacher most of my adult life. YOU are a woodworker. A really good one. You just have a lot more skills than just woodworking.
This build was super cool. I have had so many people tell me I'm crazy for painting red oak. It's my favorite wood to paint. Especially black. Good to know there are others out there that are crazy too. Lol.
Alright, For me personally I enjoy your videos and how you produce them. I enjoy your ramblings and think that your a talented and creative wood worker regardless of if you use hand tools or not! Agree with your perspective on it completely! There are alot of people that use the machine tools that you refer to and build complete garbage and you aren't doing that at all. The Koi Fish piece you built for your wife was beautiful and the table was bad ass as well! This piece to be honest is Beautiful as well. This new bookcase is beautiful as well and a testament to your precision and attention to detail with the machine tools that you use and there are likely few that could duplicate this regardless of what they use! So yes the "Wife was Right!"

Wife was right. My white oak coffee table is a lot more time consuming than I thought! 2 1/2 week vacation not going to be enough time! Epoxy fills not drying, wood dried to MUCH smaller dimensions than expected, 110 air temp making it too hot to work and drying out wood more! 1st works problems! 🤓 What is the router table you are using?

While perhaps not to the same degree as you, what engages me in a new project is doing something new that requires me to solve new problems, learn either new tools or new techniques for using existing tools, and expand my overall skills and capacities. Sadly, I also kinda intimidate myself out of starting. Turns out my wife was right---just go start; for some of us, one finds joy in the doing far more than in the planning. And nothing spur creativity like being faced with a new challenge. Thanks for the great videos.

using masking tape along the cut line on the back of the piece also significantly helps with chip out.

You, of course are much more skillful, successful and entertaining than I, but I started out my wood working adventure with Shou Sugi Ban ( I simply called it burnt cedar effect because I didn't know it had a real name), moved on to fractal burning, epoxy, laser etching, glass etching and then and only then, I bought my first decent table saw. As I have been on this journey for the past few years I have also started dabbling into CNC. I do this solely as a hobby with a failing business price tag and have no regrets. Seeing your creations has given me more ideas and I am happy to learn from someone else who might not know when to be satisfied with their current knowledge. My one request, more skulls, lol.

I have to say beautiful. You dont always have to go back to a original idea but can recreate something to a higher level of quality.
Second as a fellow creative but in sewing and other areas. Going the simple route is seamingly dull, not quality wanting to present and could be less of a quality piece in the creator's mind... but in the end the one who needs to like it knows what the one they love made them something with their time and energy that they will use is more precious and personal than just picking something from store as it has you in it... at least a tiny piece.
For some of us making something special is a love language and sharing our talents... but contanstantly learning and griwing is just as important.

Definitely ying/yang inspired. I do believe a local Chinese buffet has one very similar to the post he got the idea from.
Yeah and it was made in Thailand in a grass thatched workshop by a guy that was barefoot using the jankiest tools imaginable.

Wife was right-but then again, you spiced it up with those kickin doors (right choice to redo), the handmade pulls, the black finish, and the new tools! My grandfather and great grandfather worked through the 20th century making furniture by hand, and would have never turned their noses up at a tool to help you get the job done with less time and greater accuracy. Only advice I have is to sneak one flame or skull, even on the back to capture your vibe! Yanni? 😅🎉😂

That style has been ripped off for years, particularly from Japan/China, can even find them on amazon and usually labelled as Mingei (民藝) which is a Japanese term that translates to "folk craft" or "folk art.".

Yeah, I suspect the "Mingei" label is more about what you display on this rather than the style of furniture. Consensus seems to be that it's derived from Chinese style.

First time viewer. I loved the commentary about the project as it was being built. I can't do a fraction of work of building anything, but I can appreciate the craftsmanship and talent. The final was awesome about the wife's reaction. I thought the finished product is very good. It's professional built, looks awesome and it stands as good or better than the original.

Found it ( living room furniture, book cases section )- it's very similar in style, but it's clearly not the same piece- different wood, different finish, different shape legs, different number of drawers, different shelves.

something to help with the drawer pull design (which I think is really sleek, and because this is something in your home you might recreate) add a round-over or a chamfer on the inside of the purple heart where it mates with the walnut. When you reach into the mortice in the walnut the purple hart having that groove in the back will give you a little bit more to grab onto.
Wonderful work, beautiful build, well done. And sure that black color would be perfect to go with my home office furniture, a perfect match. However the wife would have preferred a golden oak color lol.

it is inspiring me to try and get into my shop more and work to get better. I also agree with sometimes the buying the top end tool is the way to go off the bat. I personally have run through about $500 worth of cheap of the cheap palm sanders. I am still finding them randomly hanging out. then I got the standard dewalt (used) and ran that until it needed a magic spell to get it to start.finally I decided to try the Festool entry level sander ($250) the budget tool of their brand with no frills and oh how I love using it. I hated sanding then suddenly I was looking for things to sand for hours 😋

Love watching and listening to you. I totally agree with the ocd thing. If there’s a difficult way to do something, why not?! And if it takes 2,5 times longer, the longer the better. I sew and paint, not at the same time. When I find a flaw, I give it to a special friend.
I have been a public school woodshop teacher most of my adult life. YOU are a woodworker. A really good one. You just have a lot more skills than just woodworking.

This build was super cool. I have had so many people tell me I'm crazy for painting red oak. It's my favorite wood to paint. Especially black. Good to know there are others out there that are crazy too. Lol.
Alright, For me personally I enjoy your videos and how you produce them. I enjoy your ramblings and think that your a talented and creative wood worker regardless of if you use hand tools or not! Agree with your perspective on it completely! There are alot of people that use the machine tools that you refer to and build complete garbage and you aren't doing that at all. The Koi Fish piece you built for your wife was beautiful and the table was bad ass as well! This piece to be honest is Beautiful as well. This new bookcase is beautiful as well and a testament to your precision and attention to detail with the machine tools that you use and there are likely few that could duplicate this regardless of what they use! So yes the "Wife was Right!"

wife was right - "less is more" with this piece - the original looked more early 80's than mid century (I can also imagine a black and red lacquer version being marketed as 'modern-Asian') your interpretation really 'elevates' the original inspiration piece (the monochrome curves/angular shelves contrasted by those doors? wow! ) good stuff

Wife was right. My white oak coffee table is a lot more time consuming than I thought! 2 1/2 week vacation not going to be enough time! Epoxy fills not drying, wood dried to MUCH smaller dimensions than expected, 110 air temp making it too hot to work and drying out wood more! 1st works problems! 🤓

Couldn’t find the designer but all the ones that came up like it were real yang yang or oriental style bookshelves and you’re wife was right!
While perhaps not to the same degree as you, what engages me in a new project is doing something new that requires me to solve new problems, learn either new tools or new techniques for using existing tools, and expand my overall skills and capacities.
Sadly, I also kinda intimidate myself out of starting. Turns out my wife was right---just go start; for some of us, one finds joy in the doing far more than in the planning. And nothing spur creativity like being faced with a new challenge.
