Joe and Mario Duplantier's mom passed away after a year-long battle fighting cancer, during the recording of Magma. Their loss inspired the spiritual direction that Gojira take on the album and is even reflected in its title track "Magma". "Magma actually refers to the lava when it is still in a volcano, it's the blood of the Earth at the point where it is boiling and ready to explode," Joe Duplantier explained to The Independent. "We put the sun on the cover to symbolically represent the big bang, the source of life. Not only that, but if you remove the 'g' from Magma it spells Mama and we see the 'g' as a representation of Gojira."

This is a creeper album. The kind that creeps up on you after you listen to it a few times. After it fully blossoms within you, it will forever be one of your favorites. These kinds are the best......
zazz82 The whole vibe of this song(the whole album even)is meant to be depressing. I feel like it accomplishes that goal, and exceeds it with beautiful riffs and melodic harmonics. The album as a whole is one that will forever be one of my personal favorites. The fact that it was for the recently deceased mother of Joe and Mario makes the eerie but graceful feel that much more prominent.

I'm slowly turning to Magma after the 5th consecutive listening. How brilliant is this shit? I haven't been so struck by music since I found out about Death.
Weirdly enough, I hear a lot of the band Death in some of the guitar and drum riffs of Gojira. That, and both bands were/are great at making really odd sounds for metal music sound heavy and also pretty at the same time
Gojira is definitely moving in a more melodic direction with this album. That sound they got in the intro to Esoteric Surgery and The Axe and other songs (where the guitar picks really fast in sync with the double bass) wasn't in this album, and that is one my favorite things they did musically, but I can't complain really. This album kicks ass in its own way and like I said, it's definitely more melodic and emotional. They also experimented and used a lot more clean vocals in this album, but I like it. GOJIRA!!!
The death of their mother, probably heavily influenced the end result, sound and theme of the album. Heard somewhere that they threw away a lot of songs and wrote new ones because of it, and that it is more or less dedicated to her. But it really is a masterpiece nonetheless!
A good few people that I know really dislike this album, sure going into the album I wanted the heaviest music of the universe, but after hearing it, I am glad that they didn't do that. This is heavy on a whole new level, lyrically anyway. Also, the bridge/breakdown in this song is so fucking good!
This song makes me appreciate my mother even more. She went through hell to raise me and my brother. I'm forever grateful to her for allowing us to pursue music.
Blows my mind that the intro to this song is the same intro they've been playing to songs like Oroborus at concerts for *years.* It's like we finally get to hear the full song that's been hidden away after all this time. Awesome.
I've seen Gojira around, here and there, but never really picked em up. Finally, after hearing "Stranded", I picked up this album and... man... what totally weird vibe (In a good way) Going from some hard crunching lines from Stranded to this... which sounds like im being whisked away on clouds, in a extremely trippy lucid dream. I saw on another video where Gojira was compared to a fine red wine; its weird at first but after a while, it becomes tasty and something looked forward to. I can attest to that.
There's something about this band and their sound that is so refined.........it's almost as though they've been around for a hundred years to create this music.
