Damn guys. I see both sides. But don’t be so cynical to act like it would bad for ‘Jira to get a Grammy. They just doubled the effective lifespan of their group. BUT, I’m a veteran live sound engineer here in Charleston and several of my dear friends have won Grammy’s, and lord knows they each deserved it. Truly gifted artists, as unbiased as I can possibly be, these people are truly world class musicians. BUT, I’ve also recently found out/heard (not confirmed as far as I know) that bands, or more likely their management, pay $50k to be in the running, and often new categories are created to accommodate certain groups which might not neatly fit into another genre. I’m not sure what to make of that. Should I be pleased that talented artists finally found some portion of the recognition they deserved? Or should I be concerned that maybe certain artists are all-but paying-to-play? I’m not a Grammy aficionado, so it’s not like I know every category of the top of my head, but I am a music, including international music lover lie it’s my blood, which in some ways it is, but some of these music categories I’ve never, ever heard of, it’s kinda my job to scan through music genres on incredibly diverse playlists, as I often provide sound reinforcement for international groups. When the whirling dervishes ask you to play something appropriate when the doors to the venue open, don’t play Napalm Death. Wait till right after. I hope ‘Jira gets a Grammy. It won’t water them down, and some of the machinations instituted to exploit opportunities to go forth SHOULD make you think twice. But if winning a Grammy by throwing $50k at the opportunity is what it takes to help Joe go forth and scream, “plastic! Plastic bags in the sea! Plastic! Plastic bags in the sea!” Remember when Jethro Tull won the best metal act over Metallica’s And Justice for All? I was a teenager already having absorbed Justice by the time the Grammys happened, and I was surprised that Metallica was in the running. Then I was shocked that Jethro Tull had remained a band for the previous 15-20 years. Then I was speechless, like in bizarro world, I wonder how much that Grammy cost? It’s too bad though. Metallica was really onto something and they could have gone on to be a real world dominating powerhouse of metal. If only. For the Grammy they lost. Oh, well.
