Had the same failure. Hitachi distributor leaking via the bushing. Replaced with REMAN Hitachi unit before I was stranded or stalled. Now I am I have to replace the starter. 12.39 volts on the battery. No crank. No start. Thinking 28 year-old starter is the culprit. Already checked for oil on the replacement REMAN Hitachi distributor. Nada. Love how you handled the wife's situation. I mean helped.
UPDATE:
Cleaned distributor on a whim. No oil but it had some type of powdery substance. Stalled twice last week and had a no crank/no start last night. Once I cleaned the distributor with MAFS cleaner, car starts now! Still, as a precaution ordered a NEW Spectra distributor. Might keep an extra one in stock since this is my work commuter car.
Anyway, this video is gold for anyone with an old Altima or Sentra that stalls of no crank/ no start. ALWAYS CHECK THE DISTRIBUTOR. EVEN IF THERE IS NO OIL, CLEAN IT with MAFS cleaner.
Now I have a new Bosch starter on the parts rack at home. ;)
Update 2:
Replaced distributor for stalling.
Car still no crank/start.
Hit starter with vice grips, and the car started.
Replaced starter (what a pain on the Altima!!!).
Now the car is solid again.
No more stalling when warm and the car starts when it's suppose to.

I need some help on my 2003 1.8l sentra I posted to. this video .
Getting only 1.66v with a tester Low voltage at the fuse panel for 3 specific fuses
Mete fuse
Fuel pump fuse
Abs fuse.
Every other fuse is 12v with key on.
Car ran fine shut it off on a cold winter day , no start no wipers no power locks no headlights or radio.
Not sure if this cars immobilizer unit would block all them functions causing low voltage?
Yeah but what about addressing the reason for the oil intrusion which is the real culprit? Would a new disty O-ring and cap seal fix that? Can you clean the disty instead of buying a new/reman?

Question i had to put a battery in my 2001 nissan altima that didn't match but it was close just a slightly higher cold crank like 20 amps higher and thats when it started to take a good 30 seconds to a min of constant cranking to start i have the right one now but its still doing it but after the first long start its fine as long as I don't leave it sitting for a while I know I burnt something out but don't know what any ideas
That's a great back door description of the solution. I'm guessing you had a diagnostic code (?CPS) on a no start and then discovered the oil. Thanks for another relaxed and very entertaining video.

i am working on a 96 sentra i checked it for spark and it has spark what could be the problem. someone drove this car with bad vale cover gasket for like a year so there is oil probably under the cap too
so i have a nissan altima 2001 and yesterday i took it for a trip from sf to pleasonton over afreeway and at one point was flooring the gas pedal and it wasnt going any faster than 80 and then as i would decelerate it would start to become jumpy as i would accelerate and the engine flutters as its in park with the engine, do you know what the problem could be?

Nissan loves their optical distributors, had a similar problem on a v6 nissan quest, it would actually run but would stall out after it got warm. All I had to do was blow the dust out and it worked great.

Did it turn over? My 1999 Nissan Altima just click. I recently change the oil to synthetic for the first time at 230,000 miles. It just click when I turn the key. Did your car at least turn over ???? I think mine is the starter problem.
camshaft position sensor in this case- distributor if it has spark plug wires coming out of it.

I'm having the same problem the battery wasn't getting contact, so now the car is getting contact and now it making a kinda RRR sound fighting to start what can I do in this case the past couple of nights have been -3 degrees can that be a reason why I have a nissan altima 2004

Hey Brian, I loved the video and followed to swap out it my 97 Sentra's distributor (which the mechanic said had a bad coil).
So, now that everythings back in place (yes I marked the rotator's and distributor's positions), I start the car up and it rev's high (about 3K) for 30-60 seconds and then the engine starts to speed up like I'm in a race. Doesn't seem normal. Did I goof up when I put everything back together? Is there something else that I need to look at?
On a 2002 Maxima it was the crankshaft sensor going bad that would make the engine rev like that.

Sounds like you stabbed it correctly. Just need to follow the Emissions tag instructions now for setting the timing with a timing light.

My sentra has trouble starting, but it starts. I've heard it could be the fuel pump, swirl control valve and even crank and cam sensors. I got new sensors and that wasn't the problem. Could the control valve or fuel pump be the problem or would I be wasting dollars?

I have a 2001 Nissan Sentra currently parked in front of my friend's house because it wouldn't start, but cranked. The fuel pump hummed when I turned the key just before cranking it, and all of the belts turned, but I was still getting nothing. I can't check out the dash codes or anything until tomorrow, but I was wondering if it had anything to do with the security system. My key-less remote was dying prior to this problem and I just ordered some new CR2025 batteries, but of course, USPS decided to take their time with that. When I go to check on it tomorrow, are there any other things I should check? Fuel lines, spark plugs, etc? Or is an issue with the security system? One last thing I should add; for a few weeks before this, every so often the engine would vibrate a little more than usual and the revs would bounce up and down a tiny bit for about 10 seconds before smoothing out. I for the most part try not to make short trips with my car, but when it failed to start yesterday, I had moved started it before and moved it out of his driveway (so about 30 feet), and then it wouldn't start.

1.8 Sentra wont start after running fine .
It's a voltage issue that arose out nowhere
No dash cluster movement
No wiper power no headlights.
Key on new battery only reading 1.66v at the fuse panel for the meter gauge fuse and fuel pump fuse .
Something causing low voltage would this be the immobilizer unit ?
The schematic for ignition relay seems to function everything that isnt working but we checked the igntion relay all relays seem good.

I have a 2004 Nissan Altima that starts when it wants and doesn't start when it wants. When I turn the key I hear a click. We've had it in to the mechanics and they say the battery is fairly new and they can't find anything wrong with it. Then it will be fine for a month and then it starts not starting again. It has NEVER left us totally stranded and does eventually start, but sometimes it takes as much as 5-10 minutes. Sometimes switching to a different set of keys will help and other times turning the key and putting it in neutral will help. I will bring the car into the mechanics and see if he says that what you suggest in the video is the problem. Thanks for any help.
Check the starter
If this is your problem the engine will crank over, but not start. If it's locked up and won't crank then this is not your problem.

Think of buying a 2001 Nissan sentry that won't start so that I can fix and flip is this the problem guy told me it won't start I think it would be a good investment if I can flip it? Maybe, maybe not. Could be either cam or crank position sensors.... Or could be a failed catalyst.... The latter is a loss cause.
I have a 2000 Altima that will turn over but won't start. I was driving on the highway, car was running fine and out of nowhere car lost power and died. Upon trying to start it again it would fire, sputter for a couple seconds then die, just like it would if the car had run completely out of gas but there is 3/4 of a tank. After several attempts the battery went dead. Towed it home, found a post about someone who experienced the exact issue and it was a dead cell in the battery causing it to not start. Replaced the battery and on the first 3 attempts the car turned over 3-4 times and just stopped. Nothing, no warning lights, everything just stopped. After the 3rd try I checked the battery connection and neg connection wasn't completely tight. Tightened it up and tried starting it again. This time it didn't quit and continued to turn over but didn't fire. So I tapped on the fuel filter with a wrench, tried it and it barely fired. Tried it again and would just turn over without firing. Tried tapping on fuel filter again but nothing. After watching this video I noticed there was oil all around the distributor that normally isn't there. It looks like it came from what I guess is a blow by hose that is near the distributor. So with all that being said, my question is do you think I can get away with just cleaning the sensor part you are talking about or must it be replaced? Thanks in advance for any advice or help you can offer!
What fixed it?.
Could it be the ignition (coil) relay? I’ve got a similar issue and read that the relay can cause these issues. I’ve got spark... looks like fuel supply issue which can also be related to the relay.
It was the distributor that caused the problem.
There's a nut that's holds a disc inside it that comes loose and it causes it to not fire properly. It's a really simple fix.
What size engine is that? I have an 2003 nissan sentra that is my daughters with the 1.8 L that cranks but doesnt start.....sounds like everyone has this problem. I dont want to pay hundreds of dollars to fix it. I just had it towed to my house. I dont know how and where to start. Any info on what i can do? Any help would be appreciated . Thanks

Hi Brian ! I was hoping you could point us in the right direction: 95 Sentra, crank no start. We have spark to all 4 plugs, we have fuel pressure, we have compression. The car died on us last month; we replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, cap and rotor, fuel pressure regulator and spark plugs. Immediately after installing the new fuel pressure regulator I reinstalled the fuel pump fuse and turned it over and it ran for about 90 seconds and then stalled; haven't gotten it to start again. I know we have fuel pressure, and the compression test I did shows compression in all cylinders but the compression is low in cyl 1 and 4. Suggestions? :) THANK YOU !!!!

1 month ago my nissan was scan and found code P0335, use to have hard start and stops while ideling. Finally refused to start a week ago. I changed crankshaft sensor at the back of engine, maintained the camshaft sensor on top of the engine and the car will not still start. i went further to test the resistances of the three sensors. 0.274Mohms old crankshaft, 6.98Mohms new crankshaft and 3.89Mohms camshaft. Please any way out?
Also i changed the spark plugs when the engine was diagnosed and couldn't locate the crankshaft sensor at the back. So i continued to use the car like that, only to see the location after the engine stopped.

Ysl Pedro , my Nissan is working very well now. if you sure that those sensors are original and the pump is good then check the relay that controls the pump.
it is just one relay and when it is bad the pump cannot pump.
just try and locate where the relay is found and then change it. it is usually inside the car beside the front door
