Pro tip: in all range mode, C-up zooms out the camera for a wider view. I have yet to see a TH-cam video video where the player does this.
Took me practice and tons of it. I loved this game so much when i was a kid i wanted to get good at it. i still remember my first route i did when i beat it, i even took it to a summer camp once to impress everyone that i could beat it even on the hardest route. I had the players guide and read about expert mode and on foot option in multiplayer, i just didn't have the patience to try. about 10-15 years later i decided to try in and..got em all quite easily. Got em all on expert mode as well (sweet wallpapers at the end). even the 3ds remake; twice! and enjoyed that sweet new title screen as a reward on both wii vc and my 3ds.
multiplayer sucked though lol also losing a wing in one hit sucks which is why i don't really bother. Sometimes your wingmen or enemies WILL purposely fly into you in all range mode.
ID4 stage gives you more bonus hit if you kill the mothership faster.
I remember unlocking this when I was like 8 or 9
when you're young its easy to master and play a game 24/7
Would stay up very late playing the game
I remember first time I beat andross brain James saying "Don't ever give up my son" scared me and I turned off the n64 and went to bed thinking I unlocked some scary creepypasta type cutscene lol
Next morning played and beat that stage again to get the good ending
You are definitely not too old, I am 39 and better at these games than I was as a kid, just beat goldeneye on OO agent and unlocked every cheat for the first time last year and unlocked on foot mode with star fox 64 a few years ago
As someone who regularly plays through on expert mode, getting medals consistently... imma just hold my tongue.

You gotta use the CUS shot then metals are much easier most of the time. It's real easy to do you just hold both bank left and right, (Z+R on n64), charge up a shot, you will notice it won't lock on, however when you shoot it and it does not directly hit the enemy but hits it with the explosion you will see +1 which means you got an extra bonus point. When you use it at first you should mainly use it on grounded enemies but once you get better you will find many ways to use it. It's easy to do but very hard to master. It seems like a glitch but they had it in 3ds star fox 64 and even had a tip about it so it is just a hidden feature of the game.

I know that feel, bro. Hard Mode Easy Route Venom is actually harder that Hard Mode Hard Route Venom-I’ve gotten plenty of medals but I never got to HMER Andross.
Can attest to this. Had a bunch of lives thrown away when I first got there and somehow pulled through on my last life. The most damage may happen at the start where things will shoot at you and fly into your ship, and also the first corridor with obstacles. I haven't thoroughly tested this (it did work for me when I tried it), but it may be possible to get by or at least have better survival chances by just barrel rolling and moving around to dodge the flying enemies and excess bullets; shooting them isn't even necessary, especially since you're already better off scoring the medal from hard Venom either way.
Because apparently plasma beam shots can toss your ship around like a bouncy ball.

I’ve always felt the Hard Mode was easier. There are more enemies so it’s SO MUCH easier to get all of the medals.
The savage thing is you can't really restart a level. Yeah, you technically can, at the cost of a life- but you start over with 3 bombs and the crap lvl 1 laser. Good luck getting a high-score with a kneecapped offensive ability. Better off resetting to Corneria.
Now that you older and smarter, presumably, just emulate the damn game and use cheats. Don't you have a mortgage to pay??
