l know star fox zero is not perfect, especially with how difficult to master the controllers are, but once you master them you don't really have to look at the gamepad unless you are z targeting, nor will you need the reticle, play the game for a few hours and you'll get the hang of it. And just gotta say, what you said about a space sim taking pictures from a window? that's bs man, that just tells me you never really learned to enjoy the gameplay and just had a negative attitude throughout the whole game, in other words, you never gave it an opportunity, because once you really get into it, you'll notice it is actually the best the franchise has offered. I just dislike how everyone has collectively gotten in line to trash talk the game, I understand since it is important that nintendo learns from their stupid mistakes, but someone's gotta say something good about it man. Yes it is kinda stuck in the past and didn't evolve as much but it really isn't that bad, I just hope Nintendo hasn't completely thrown star fox out the window, especially with how successfull starlink was.
My favourite is the original. Most straightforward design, possibly the most challenging, probably the best music, and definitely the one I return to the most. I am also an ardent defender of Assault and Zero.
Assault really had that “the end” vibe for the series. I just wished there were more levels preferably in the arwing, but I’m going to say that they lacked the resources to do so and opted for a multiplayer maps to cut corners on time and money. They took a narrative approach with a linear story, which I don’t mind, in fact I preferred since they were trying to keep the single narrative consistent. The arwing levels did in fact feel “slower” on-rails than the previous games. But Assault is a solid game overall and definitely my “true end” to the 64 timeline. The final level and the last scene made me tear back in summer 2005 with the music and dialogue between a cast of characters we had gotten to know over the past years since 64.
Now we just need Nintendo to stop fearing the wrath of overzealous 64 fanboys and actually make a new game. I'd love to see a continuation of Star Fox Assault, which is where they said they'd pick up if they ever got the chance due to essentially removing 99% of Command from canon. But unfortunately, all we keep getting is remakes and reimaginings of 64, because a significant, loud portion of the fandom doesn't understand that Star Fox needs to evolve and innovate to stay alive. And then they have the gall to blame Krystal, Rare, Namco, other fans or even IWATA for the stagnation of the franchise.
Surprised more people don't talk about the music from the original Starfox... at least for me... it really went a long way as far as immersing me in that world and making me feel like I really was flying through each different environment. It all had a very "space" like feel to it, whoever composed that music did a great job.
The music from the first game is the best of all the games, I was pretty annoyed at how crappy the music was in Starfox 64. I have most of the music from the original on my ipod.
It is kind of hilarious that Nintendo, a company known for repeatedly making sequels that only increment and improve the same repeating formulas slightly over long periods of time (Mario and Zelda), could never do that even once with Star Fox. Almost every Star Fox game feels like it's trying to be a completely different IP, even as far back as Star Fox 2.
It`s all because they thought that they needed some new, big gimmick to make a hit SF game, but in reality they just needed to do what they are good at-- improving the same formula
StarFox Assault has different control modes for the on-foot missions, and one of them is very similar to the standard 3rd person shooter controls we're familiar with nowadays.
I've yet to see folks mention this in videos, and I always wondered why. The default control scheme is pretty obnoxious, but the one you're referring to is at least OK.
@@Cheezmonka I've tried them, they all suck, and you can't change them mid game, you have to all the back to the start screen which is really annoying
@ElFreakinCid To be fair, Assault wasn't that big of a game. My family only ever knew it existed from blockbusters where we could rent it out. I just finished a playthrough yesterday, believe it or not. It fine as it's own game, but it fails when you Campared it 64. Most star fox games failed when compared to 64. The only one I say that not the case, is Star Fox Adventure, and the only reason why isn't because it's that good of a game, but becomes it's not even in the same genre as the rest of series. It really up to preference at that point
My Favorite is Starfox Assault. I played it alot sometimes with my friends as a kid and it was the first Starfox game I owned (first played would've gone to 64) and I do want to play the other games soon enough since my current experience is with 64, Adventures and Assault
I'm so disappointed at the lack of people who know about starfox assault compared to smash. We just have to hope for some unlikely reason they bring it back and not make it a call of duty remake.
8:45 Actually, Falco does more than just that. He also helps you find a few items, for example he shoots down some asteroids in Meteo to give you golden rings & a few other power ups & sometimes he gives a hand in completing mission criteria, best examples are Zoness & Macbeth. In Zoness, you have to shoot down all the search lights to go to Sector Z, he shoots down some of the search lights, and in Macbeth near the end of the level & beginning of the boss fight, you have to shoot down 8 switches to go to Area 6, then Venom 2 & get true ending, but if you fail, you go to Bolse, which leads to the fake ending. The last switch s behind a wall thing (Don`t worry it`s destructible, but it`s better to not bother it if Falco is not down by that point), and Falco shoots it for you, and hitting the last 2 switches is not as easy as it seems. P.S. Readers, you are welcome to add in anything else I missed
He also is capable of doing more damage to Star Wolf characters than your other wingmen. He would often be the one to shoot down his opposite number from Star Wolf, even in the last and most difficult (optional) encounter with them.
Falco does many small things for you. (List below) In general he is the best pilot, whereas Peppy is the experienced one and slippy the technician. On meteo he warns you seconds before you'll get attacked from behind ("Watch out Fox!"). Later on meteo he shoots down some enemies who attack you ("I think it's your turn to be thankful") and later shoots down an asteroid that pops a golden ring (one of the stony ones that you usually can not destroy, but this one you can destroy yourself. But without Falco you probably wouldnt know it works for this one). Nothing special on Fichina. But if he is not present, Leon will also attack you instead of only Wolf. On sector X, in the beginning, the warns you again about a wave coming from behind. ("Enemy group behind us. Man they're fast!"). He also "helps" you taking the warp to sector z. (He gives you feedback that you're doing it right when you fly through the warp gates). Nothing special on Bolse, Venom 1 and Katina. On solar, he warns you when the boss is re-appearing from under the lava ("Here they come"). On MacBeth he helps you with one of the switches needed for going to Area 6 and Venom II. On sector Y he reminds you to use bombs against many enemies ("take them down with one shot!") and gives you negative feedback if you fail the hidden mission target of 100 points ("is that the best you can do?") th-cam.com/video/cWQJF8IvdUw/w-d-xo.html On Aquas he tells you to "shoot a torpedo to help you see [in the dark]". On Zoness he helps you at the end with two of the search lights to come to sector z. Also gives you an early warning against the minefield before the boss ("Jeez laweez, what is that?"") On sector z he helps you shoot down one of the missiles to get to area 6. I like him most, because he's the best and most confident pilot. Where othes see a threat, he sees a target. He hates when you have to save him, and is usually much better then enemies. On sector X he wants to "have a little fun" and is eager to see the secret weappon. (I as a kid was afraid of it). Later he even mocks it ("destroy what? He's cracy.") while Slippy can be hit by it. On Titania Peppy complains ("Don't go too fast Falco") when he's going ahead on his own. He is also eager to shoot down the titania boss ("Let me get a piece of that action Fox") Also confident on Venom I ("Let's show the monkey who is boss").
@@IkeWarchol302 Krystal makes sense in the context of Adventures, but not main line Starfox. That's Katt Monroe's job. Even thou I have no problems with Krystal. As to why Starfox is going downhill??? Well both Starfox and F-zero were inspired by Arcade games. Since Arcade games are meant to be short, Nintendo doesn't know how to evolve them. The good news is the Arcade Shooters/racing games is still alive in the form of Indie games.
The on-foot sections in assault feel like garbage unless you select the dual stick control type or whatever it's called, this makes it feel like a typical shooter and actually makes them pretty fun This should have been the default control scheme though
Note about Assault: There is an alternate control scheme that plays like a more traditional Third Person Shooter, moving all movement to the Control Stick, and Camera to the C-Stick and makes the on-foot sections feel *infinitely* better. Not perfect, as I do think the On-Foot and Landmaster controls do need some fine-tuning, but overall...yeah, way better than default.
The funny thing about Adventures is that it could have been saved by having Fox get shot down at the beginning of the game, leaving him without a ship and without means to contact Great Fox right away. The set up was already there because if I remember Adventures took place at a time when the team's financials weren't good due to lack of work. Great Fox was falling apart, active pilots had been reduced to Fox and Slippy since Peppy was getting on in age and Falco had struck out on his own. It wouldn't be hard to believe Fox was stuck in a primitive planet for a while since the others didn't have much in terms of resources and manpower to conduct a search. You could then write Fox's motivation to be either find a place where he can send a distress signal that (hopefully) Great Fox can pick up or find a means to repair his Arwing so he can head off, only to get dragged into the thing with the dinosaurs, Krystal and General Scales.
That's a good idea. Also, maybe it was shown at the end of the canonical comic "Farewell, Beloved Falco", at the beginning of Star Fox Adventures, the team don't even think about Falco, wondering if he is OK. I think Adventures takes place 6 yrs after 64, but that is too long of a jump. At 6 yrs, you'd think the team would st least try to contact Falco after not hearing from him for that long. My idea for Adventures is to have Krystal be an active character as well. But, have Star Fox try to investigate what happened to Cerenia, her home planet. They have no idea Dinosaur Planet's plight is connected to Cerenia's destruction. Fox works with Krystal while Slippy and Peppy try to find clues to what happened to Cerenia. But before all this happens, this story can take place a few months after Falco left. Fox is thinking about him, worrying if he did anything to make him leave. Slippy, despite having to put up with his arrogance and sly remarks, misses him too. Peppy misses him, too but knows that he has to find his own path and understand that he had to decide at the end does he want the adrenaline rush or does he want a team/family? His coming back=he sees the team as family. He'll always want action but not at the expense of abandoning them. I hate that they went that reason for why Falco left in Command. Like, you're making him go through the same character flaw! And Krystal was done dirty with some of those endings. Fox firing Krystal was bad, too. And now finding out that he also has an ego makes it bad, too.
No...they should make Fox as another and just shoot stuff and fly planes...Starfox Adventures was a turning point I believed was there because....well the Nintendo director is crazy enough to say "
@@jigglyboo8787 for real, great replayability, with different stories to tell depending on your choices, speedruning contests, top scores, not too many hours to fully enjoy the game, great graphics for a game on a nintendo 64, etc.
As an assault fan who recognizes it's flaws, you should definitely try Star Fox Assaults twin stick controls, it makes the on foot sections feel much more like a third person shooter, if you ever plan on playing assault again I recommend playing this way. While this doesn't completely remedy the abundance on on foot sections it definitely makes them a whole lot more playable, and the landmaster might feel pretty weird at first but I was personally able to get used to it.
What's so infuriating is all the fans want is solid controls and a decent plot with more character development. If they really want to move starfox forward and away from the same old, maybe try making it more open- universe with missions and side quests, with a fully developed story so the players feel more immersed in the starfox universe. We don't need gimmicks, we just need something fresh and well made, with some new game elements and some of the classic rail-shooter action we love.
@@kohlrak The think the reason for the two screens is if someone else is watching TV, you can use the Gamepad to play the game. Legend of Zelda Wind Waker can also do this.
For me personally Assault is the one I want to play the most. Would love ports of it and Adventures, I know 64 is the fanbase's golden child and respect it and would love to play it someday, but Assault specifically just interests me most personally for its additions and overall vibe. Really hope someday someone can convince Miyamoto to get over himself when it comes to his views on this series (and f-zero) and also just properly move the series forward from Assault, storywise and in gameplay. I actually think on foot ground missions are a great next addition and they just gotta improve on what Assault laid out. And since Starfox 2 has finally seen the light of day, they can reintroduce Fay and Miyu to the crew as well. Lots of potential here than just doing remaking 64 essentially a 3rd time. Also yes, shoutouts to Space Harrier and Panzer Dragoon, there's also a remake of the first Panzer Dragoon on current day platforms for those interested.
I love Star Fox: Assault. It's my favorite game in the franchise, and while I wish I wasn't forced to get out of my Arwing to play on foot or drive the Landmaster, at least these sections were designed well with satisfying gameplay (unlike Star Wars: Rebel Strike) not to mention the vehicle design for the Arwing and Landmaster is the best in the series.
I probably played more than 1k hours on the Star Fox Assault multiplayer. It's like a tradition, everytime I visit my cousin we gotta play some multiplayer games in Star Fox Assault. They should release a modern remake with online multiplayer as it's legit one of the best multiplayer shooters that I have played. Btw, I have been binge watching your Mario Party videos lol, only have 1 left to watch.
Star Fox Assault is the absolute best title in the game. Not because of the game as a whole but the memories you make with your friends in multiplayer and the nostalgia over all
I feel like with assault, they found a winning formula with the franchise. Had they release a sequel to that game instead and tweak the controls, they would’ve had the best of both worlds with newer gimmicks while also keeping the rail shooting levels that people love.
I played Assault a lot and always felt the only good parts were the traditional rail shooting levels and a couple of the all range levels. The rest was largely forgettable.
MY CHILDHOOD! I still have Star Fox N64 and my Nintendo 64. This was back when Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Gundam, Pokemon, and many other shows were booming in the U.S. on networks like Toonami and Cartoon Network. I am currently working at a game company now. I did the Pixar internship in Summer 2019. San Francisco Bay Area was the most beautiful place I had ever seen. Unfortunately, I am stuck in Texas now.
I was a member of every star fox forum back in the day in the very early 2000's. I distinctly and vividly remember a forum member there actually posting fan fiction of an edgy version of Krystal named Kursed. That's all he ever talked about. Mentions of Kursed were even in his forum signatures. I 100% believe that person made it onto the team of star fox command and slipped that in.
I seem to recall Microsoft boasting about how the XBox was the only console that could possibly render individual hair follicles, only for Adventures to come out and do it on the _GameCube._
@@CoralCopperHead The gamecube did it slightly differently where they used parallax layers to give the illusion of fur depth. Microsoft probably meant they could render individual hair strands as polygons.
As someone who just wants a Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64) 2, and keeps getting, "There's a new Star Fox game, buuuut...." I loved everything about this video.
Assault definately had its issues, some of the on-foot levels dragged a bit too long and there werent that many levels period, but it was the best direction they could have taken Starfox honestly, it's the last Starfox game I played and I don't think Nintendo has released anything else worthwhile for that series since.
It would have really helped if they had kept namco to work on future star fox titles. If they did not only would we have a great on going narrative but would had games that refined and perfected assaults gameplay style.
Holy shit. As a Star Fox fan, I always had trouble trying to find the words to explain my thoughts with the series, but you managed to perfectly summarize them. How does this only have 300 views?! This was such an fun, interesting and engaging watch all the way to the end. I seriously can't thank you enough for making this video.
yo thank you so much i really appreciate it!! Star Fox is one of my favorite game series and has always been, so I was really invested in this video for sure haha. Thanks for watching!
I can't recommend enough sin and punishment star successor enough. It's one of my absolute favorite games and made me love treasure as a developer I've played my fair share of star fox 64 and assault, and I really like them, but I've never beaten them. I always get distracted with other games, but after this video I am inclined to see them through to the end
i totally agree. Star Successor is one of the greatest rail shooters out there right now and is just a phenomenal game in general. Can’t recommend it enough. Thanks for watching!!
My first N64 game back in the day was StarFox, so it holds a special place in my heart. It is such a fun game and I went on a Twitter thread rant about how a lot of games have lost that replayability factor and this game is my favorite example of that. Discovering a new route in 64 meant getting better at that route then suddenly finding a new one or messing up and trying to get back on the correct track. That being said, I loved Assault. I don't think I was nearly as bothered by the on foot portions as many people. I'd have liked an expansion on it through better controls an maybe some NPC interactions and missions for story changes in later games. Watching so many playthroughs were people used the charged shot for the WiiU game I suddenly understand why. Those controls are horrible. It takes the shooter out of the shooter.
This was really well made! We don't see many in-depth looks at the Star Fox franchise like you did, covering all games in the series. You did a great job expressing how this franchise always gets the short end of the stick despite having a great foundation. Star Fox 64 is one of my favorite games of all time, I have a tradition of beating it every single year, something I've been doing since the 2000s. Every year in late December, I dust off my N64, put my admittedly rusty Star Fox 64 cartridge into it, and do my usual route to see if I can finally beat my high score from many years prior (spoiler: I never manage to). The route I always make is Corneria > Meteo > Katrina > Sector X > Macbeth > Area 6 > Venom. I always do the hard route requirements for each of those stages, but I choose the "change route" option for some of them because they're better to rack up more points (like Meteo over Sector Y, and Sector X over Solar). Anyway, I really enjoyed your editing style and your narration! You got a new subscriber :D
yo thanks so much for this comment, i really appreciate it!! i love hearing everyone’s stories about how much they love replaying star fox games - the replayability is easily one of my favorite parts of the series
I always find if crazy how Star Fox isn't at least consistently coming out. Like, how hard can it be to just make more levels? It's crazy how they reinvent the wheel every game.
@@danjoredd Let's being real that Star Fox 2 is almost 30 years ahead of it's time and Miyamoto in a cheeky way took some stuff and copy pasted Star Fox 1's formula for making Star Fox 64 and doomed the franchise right there. Oh, but "moar control innovation" . Typical Miyamoto style.
>Adventures looks amazing for an early GameCube game Am I the only one who noticed that nearly every GameCube game I've seen has AMAZING-looking water? Whenever you see water in a GameCube game, it always looks awesome.
I know it's not an official Star Fox entry, but I was a little bummed there was no mention of the Star Fox crossover with Starlink. I genuinely mean it when I say there was more love and potential put into that crossover than the latest entry to the actual Star Fox series. Most of the original, 64 voice actors return to reprise their roles, the characters have on point and fun interactions with not only each other, but the base Starlink cast, the gameplay feels incredibly adaptable for Star Fox players, heck. Ubisoft goes the extra mile to include Fox in the base game's plot and it honestly feels so natural. My biggest gripe has to be that a good chunk of content is locked behind payable DLC. Aside from that, super solid video! You summed up my feelings about the Star Fox series really well. I know it's a long shot, but since Nintendo is picking a handful of Gamecube games to rerelease on the Switch, I hope Star Fox Assault is one game they consider giving that treatment.
If online multiplayer had been a thing at the time of Assault’s release, it would’ve been huge. I’ve had Halo levels of fun playing couch multiplayer in that game. It was actually really fun and polished, and basically just got held back by the length of the campaign and lack of branching paths like 64 had.
You forgot to mention how Star Fox 64 innovated rumble. It was the very first way that most players I would wager ever experienced force feedback. It was shipped with the game. It came in the box. And it was in all the marketing materials.
Yep! And the rumble pack was bundled with the game. At launch you could only get it by buying StarFox. Wouldn't be stand alone for 6 months to a year later...
Assault by FAR gives me the most nostalgia… I used to watch my brothers play against each other (sometimes I would play, too) and it was a BLAST!! In fact, the game was the first Star Fox game I remember.
I got Star Fox 64 3D for my 3DS on christmas morning when i was 7 years old. I can remember being wowed by the 3D and must've played through it 50 times. It just sucks that its so short. I know this is a tall order, but id like to see a StarFox game of 40hr length on Nintendo switch or a later console. That would be awesome.
It makes me so sad. This is one of my favorite series of all time and I still play through Star Fox 64 to this day. Yet we've never really gotten a true good successor of it. All I want is literally just another on rail shooter. No gimmicks or anything. If they announced that they were releasing a new Star Fox game in the same style as Star Fox 64 tonight, I would literally place an order for a switch right now lol
I read that Miyamoto had Starfox 2 cancelled because he felt it was competition, he made 64 and Argonaut made 2, and didnt want the inferior consoles game taking sales away from his game
It's sad how I grew up thinking Miyamoto was such a genius, but over the years it's become clear he's just a manager and just as much a business man as a creative. This video really makes me feel like he's been holding the company back and too obsessed with dumb gimmicks
I think it would be cool if they made a prequel where you play as James mcloud. I feel like that would lead to a lot of new opportunities in terms of story.
Tbh I'm a big softie when it comes to Adventures. I'm sure it has everything to do with the fact it was my first Star Fox and I played it as a kid, but I can't hate it, or even dislike it. Same with Assault. I wish Nintendo would quit sleeping on this series (or at least, quit trying to fix something that wasn't broken.) Great video tho.
So one thing i would love to see in the next installment is a more fleshed out Lylat System and more witty banter between the members of Star Fox. Perhaps in the same sort of attitude or tone of the Guardians of the Galaxy game that came out.
I miss Starfox in general. Even now I still find myself playing 64 3D and assault (which I can’t believe still works alongside my 14 year old GameCube that takes 20 minutes to warm up). It’s one of Nintendo’s IPs with a bit of a rocky history so they’re rather afraid to innovate. Command was like bad fanfiction and killed the series for a bit and while I really like zero it was just 64 again but with better production value. I want to see something more like with adventures and assault, bring in new characters and a new story, I want to see this universe grow. Hell maybe some spin-offs too like a game centered around star wolf, I would definitely play that
My favourite is easily Star Fox 64 or Lylat Wars here in Australia. So much replayibility. Love all the different pathways you can take and varied level design.
Superb video, and so well-edited! This was really engaging to watch, and I feel like you gave a really comprehensive look at each game. I do have a soft spot for Star Fox Command, I must admit, and its endings really felt impactful for me, but the criticisms presented here were definitely fair. But again, this was a really enjoyable watch from start to finish, and I appreciate all the work and heart you put into this. Really well done! 🌟
yo thank you so much for watching and commenting! I really appreciate your feedback and I'm happy that you enjoyed the video - and it's awesome that you enjoy Star Fox Command!
Star fox assault was very underrated I think people where so burned by adventure that they just kinda lumped it as the same type of game probably due to its on foot sections ,making it look like adventure Shame really was feel like a on rail star fox game would be a slam dunk imo and not expensive to make at all
Man I love this series. Excellent video, keep it up! Genuinely surprised that you aren’t at 1K yet considering the quality of your production and the expert video pacing.
Thanks so much for watching!! i really appreciate that feedback, I love the Star Fox series a ton and it’s been awesome to see the amount of people who love this series just as much as I do. I appreciate the support!!
I wish the switch had a Star Fox Game, i miss this series so much , Fox was like My first videogame hero, and The whole team feel like family to me, all those early childhood days renting SF64 at blockbuster and playing it in the mornings are some of My most precious memories, and i still play once in a while, and when i do, i get all teary eyed during the credits. (Love every Game too, well except zero)
16:10 ... You uh, you did check the options menu for the Twin-Stick option, right? It's still annoyingly slow, but it's actually third-person shooter controls.
hope this video blows up. as someone who has only played SF64 on the N64 growing up, all the later games just.. looked too smooth? if that makes sense, whereas 64 really felt sharp, quick witted, and greatly paced. great analysis :)
Thank you for watching! Yeah as somebody who just loves Star Fox 64, I hope that we can eventually get another entry in the series that recaptures some of that game's charm
Star Fox skipping the Wii seems like such a weird move Like aiming with the wiimote and moving your ship with the nunchucks stick seem like such a natural and easy concept
Excellent video on the Star Fox series! Having no experience with the series, I feel informed of its strengths/weaknesses and feel a growing desire for an ideal Star Fox game. At 27:03, you start saying "reticule" instead of reticle. This is a minor error, for it did not hinder my understanding of the information presented. I knew exactly what you meant given the context. While this is one of your longer videos, the pacing is really good and the length is suitable to the amount of information presented. Well done!
Missing the old Star Fox is exactly what got us Star Fox Zero. We need to move on and hope they make something new like the gamecube one (not adventures obviously) Or even a smaller one would be fine like the DS tactical one
I have played every Star Fox to date. (Even the Starlink knock off.) This Franchise is what got me in to games. It fueled a passion for science fiction, and my love of flying. It hurts to see something that you love slowly wither into obscurity. Star Fox has a ton of potential just waiting to be explored, but likely will never happen. Just imagine free roam exploring a dead starship, and having to retrieve a sort of black box to get the data on what happened and then having to fight your way back to your ship against a rogue machine, or alien monster that roams the ship?
Ex-Zodiac has me really hype, honestly. Watched someone stream the demo awhile back and now I really can't wait to see the full game. Love the art style, music and presentation.
I think the main issue with StarFox is Miyamoto himself, Rare and Namco have actually pushed the series forward while Miyamoto keeps remaking the original game.
I love starfox so much I dont care how terrible people say how bad the games are I have enjoyed all starfox games for one reason or another I want a starfox zero port to switch If they fix the controls it would be a mint game starfox needs more love
Love your video! Hopefully if there is a next game, it will correct or rectify all the wrongs that the writers made when they wrote Command’s storyline.
Zero is the only game I haven't played in the Star Fox series, but no matter what I play, I always find myself coming back to the OG SNES Star Fox. I love it more than 64.
Ever since we got that leaked ROM of Dinosaur Planet showing us what could’ve been for that game had RARE stood it’s ground… it’s made me wonder two things: 1. Would we have seen Assault at all? 2. Would DP have ended up as an Xbox exclusive, being their answer to the Zelda franchise? Given years later Microsoft took on an indie game about a fox that was very Zelda inspired as an exclusive, then acquiring Tunic felt like such a wink & a nod to DP in a way. Def wanna check out some of these games now by the way.
The main reason why assault is my favorite is because it doesn’t have Andross or even feels like a 64 copy. The amazing story to the new ideas I really love Star Fox Assault assault
Great video! It hadn't occurred to me before that Star Fox has consistently been focused on "showcasing the new cool technology" over anything else. The repeated rehashing of Star Fox 64 is also frustrating, because it's not that the fans want "Star Fox 64 again", but rather "a game in the same gameplay style of 64" (straightforward controls, branching paths, replayability, etc). Hopefully one day Nintendo will get a clue. Assault takes my #2 spot, because although it's slower and doesn't feel the same as 64, the story, music, visuals, etc aspects are still good.
Really fantastic video. I'm not sure what else can be said, this is all basically how I feel about the series as a whole, pretty much sums it all up. At the end of the day they need to just make a SF game that's fun and with arcade-y gameplay, and they just need to spend a good amount of developing a full experience, none of this where you have fewer levels and less replay value than SF64; there's no excuse at this stage of modern game development. There's so much opportunity with the core gameplay too, which is basically about quick movement and quick shooting. They could add a vehicle, like a speeder bike or hovercraft (like in Wipeout), to go down narrow caverns and into the core of planets to destroy an enemy base down there, using the left stick to dodge environmental hazards while using the right stick/gyro controls to fire at enemies. You could even do a level where you have to race Wolf to a supply depot via ground vehicle to stop him from blowing it up or something, avoiding rocks and enemy craft while speeding along. You could also do a level like the Macbeth level from the original game (in a hollow planet), except that you go back and forth between driving on the top and bottom of the surfaces, if that makes sense. It doesn't have to be all on rails, as long as the movement and shooting are quick and satisfying. You could have a handful of levels like in Rogue Squadron, where you have a number of objectives laid out (and can change as you play the level and events unfold), that necessitate navigating terrain and speedy, urgent flying from one location to another in a free-form manner, protecting some targets or ambushing enemy groups and stuff, just in that super-satisfying SF quickly reactive gameplay. Like all-range mode, but not limited to just one square arena where you basically have visibility of everything all at once. They need to make a full game with like 25 levels, a bunch of different ways to earn medals (not just hits), and a big variety of difficulty in finding new paths through the solar system, and for the levels themselves. Stop playing to the gimmicks and ask "is this a full, fun experience?"
Whether or not you like Assault is a matter of taste. If you like the land sections, you'll love the game. If you don't, the game will probably be serviceable or mediocre to you. I've replayed Assault many times, going for higher and higher scores. The pacing issues aren't as much of a problem to me, because I've memorised the levels. Granted, I don't want to be the guy who just goes, "git gud," but most of the people who I see who dislike Assault don't seem to have put much time into it, whether it's reviewers when the game was new, or 64 tards who dropped the game when they weren't willing to bother with the land sections. I also want to mention that Star Fox Assault has some of my favourite multiplayer in any game. It's incredibly fun, underrated and addictive. Whenever I play it with my friends, we can never put it down.
I know it's just a mod but Starfox Event Horizon did catch my eye especially since they actually got the voice actor for Krystal and Wolf to reprise thier roles.
thanks so much for watching! this is a longer video but i hope you enjoyed it. let me know what your favorite star fox game is!
l know star fox zero is not perfect, especially with how difficult to master the controllers are, but once you master them you don't really have to look at the gamepad unless you are z targeting, nor will you need the reticle, play the game for a few hours and you'll get the hang of it.
Adventures is best star fox game
My favorites are both the SNES games and Star Fox 64.
Assault is the best, no questions.
Also 3D is definitely the best way to play 64.
Star fox Assault is primed for perfection. Hopefully that game gets a remaster with online multiplayer on the switch
Can we Say Command was all but a pipe dream...
@@ElFreakinCid Miyamoto said that he has no interest in making another Starfox unless he can come up with a new gameplay idea for it.
@@ElFreakinCidWe even have the opportunity to go backwards if they really had the sack for it. Starfox Origins, Nintendo. Do it.
Surprised more people don't talk about the music from the original Starfox... at least for me... it really went a long way as far as immersing me in that world and making me feel like I really was flying through each different environment. It all had a very "space" like feel to it, whoever composed that music did a great job.
Agreed, Star Fox had big "The Last Starfighter" energy and the soundtrack was a major part of that.
Koji Kondo never misses. Hajime Wakai did a lot of good tracks, too.
The music from the first game is the best of all the games, I was pretty annoyed at how crappy the music was in Starfox 64. I have most of the music from the original on my ipod.
I still will hear the Corneria theme in my head randomly during the week. It's so good.
The original SNES OST is AMAZING.
Event Horizon is looking tight!
It`s all because they thought that they needed some new, big gimmick to make a hit SF game, but in reality they just needed to do what they are good at-- improving the same formula

Agreed, Assault was a solid banger.

Actually, Falco does more than just that.
On sector Y he reminds you to use bombs against many enemies ("take them down with one shot!") and gives you negative feedback if you fail the hidden mission target of 100 points ("is that the best you can do?") th-cam.com/video/cWQJF8IvdUw/w-d-xo.html
On Aquas he tells you to "shoot a torpedo to help you see [in the dark]".
On Zoness he helps you at the end with two of the search lights to come to sector z. Also gives you an early warning against the minefield before the boss ("Jeez laweez, what is that?"")
On sector z he helps you shoot down one of the missiles to get to area 6.
Big mood.

The good news is the Arcade Shooters/racing games is still alive in the form of Indie games.
The on-foot sections in assault feel like garbage unless you select the dual stick control type or whatever it's called, this makes it feel like a typical shooter and actually makes them pretty fun
This should have been the default control scheme though
Im so glad you mentioned star fox assaults ost it’s one of my favorites I don’t think it’s brought up enough.

The menu music was pretty good
@@marksrecroom - You should give the Multiplayer tracks a listen, too!
@@marksrecroom Actually you can use the minus button on the game pads to have the cockpit view to the Tv screen and back again in Starfox Zero.
Apparently it wasn’t even originally meant to be star fox
Wait I said this before I watched the video
No...they should make Fox as another and just shoot stuff and fly planes...Starfox Adventures was a turning point I believed was there because....well the Nintendo director is crazy enough to say

Just imagine a game with the on-foot gameplay/story approach that Assault had with the Arwing combat/on-rail shooting/variety of 64
I played Assault a lot and always felt the only good parts were the traditional rail shooting levels and a couple of the all range levels. The rest was largely forgettable.

Star fox 64 was my childhood. Ironically I have great memories of playing it with my dad.
If online multiplayer had been a thing at the time of Assault’s release, it would’ve been huge. I’ve had Halo levels of fun playing couch multiplayer in that game.

So one thing i would love to see in the next installment is a more fleshed out Lylat System and more witty banter between the members of Star Fox. Perhaps in the same sort of attitude or tone of the Guardians of the Galaxy game that came out.
I love this series hopefully Nintendo would make another one and bring back its original glory
And hopefully they make a new story
@@rickyronny4019 Miyamoto is usually anti story when it comes to making games.
Starfox 64 was one of my first games
I miss Starfox in general. Even now I still find myself playing 64 3D and assault (which I can’t believe still works alongside my 14 year old GameCube that takes 20 minutes to warm up). It’s one of Nintendo’s IPs with a bit of a rocky history so they’re rather afraid to innovate. Command was like bad fanfiction and killed the series for a bit and while I really like zero it was just 64 again but with better production value. I want to see something more like with adventures and assault, bring in new characters and a new story, I want to see this universe grow. Hell maybe some spin-offs too like a game centered around star wolf, I would definitely play that
oh man it would be so incredibly sick if we got a Star Wolf prequel or spin-off. There’s a lot of potential there for sure!
Dude this was really well edited, I expected this to have way more views!
(also my favorite is star fox 64)
thanks so much for watching!!
This channel is a real diamond in the rough. Keep up the great work!
thanks so much for watching!! i really appreciate it!
@@marksrecroom Thanks very much for the gracious reply! I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. :)
It was called Lylat Wars in the UK.
the first one was called Starwing and 64 was called Lylat Wars but later games would keep the title Star Fox iirc
Starfox Assault was the last real and best Starfox game imo
bro i thought from the thumbnail that this was a starfox x kanye mashup of the life of pablo. anyways, great video essay with very valid points.
Finally, another person who appreciates the beauty of the Star Fox franchise as much as I do! You’ve earned yourself a new subscriber!
Knowing that Namco worked on Star Fox Assault makes me wish we had an Ace Combat styled Star Fox game
I really really hope it cone’s in 2022 with returning characters like krystal bill grey panther Amanda and Fay. Or star fox assault hd on switch.
16:10 ... You uh, you did check the options menu for the Twin-Stick option, right? It's still annoyingly slow, but it's actually third-person shooter controls.
You have very few subs for this type of quality my dude, so for you buddy I'm subbing great video
hope this video blows up. as someone who has only played SF64 on the N64 growing up, all the later games just.. looked too smooth? if that makes sense, whereas 64 really felt sharp, quick witted, and greatly paced. great analysis :)
Thank you for watching! Yeah as somebody who just loves Star Fox 64, I hope that we can eventually get another entry in the series that recaptures some of that game's charm
Star Fox skipping the Wii seems like such a weird move
Like aiming with the wiimote and moving your ship with the nunchucks stick seem like such a natural and easy concept
Well done!
LOL that’s a funny error, thanks so much for watching!!
Missing the old Star Fox is exactly what got us Star Fox Zero.
We need to move on and hope they make something new like the gamecube one
(not adventures obviously)
Or even a smaller one would be fine like the DS tactical one
I love Star Fox Zero, well because it's my first rodeo with the franchise.
19:41 Fox and Falco joining the F-Zero universe, would be absolutely amazing for a future game in that franchise 👏🏼
Arcade shooters and arcade racing games are still a thing indie games.
This was a great video. I've never played Starfox but it was still an engaging watch.
thanks so much for watching!!
Breathe of wild styled game but star Fox 😭😮💨
@@fishbreeder45 I recommend Ex Zodiac. it's a lot like Star Fox.
Ex-Zodiac has me really hype, honestly. Watched someone stream the demo awhile back and now I really can't wait to see the full game. Love the art style, music and presentation.
I totally agree - I just played it in Early Access on Steam and it’s super good. Definitely recommend it for any fans of classic Star Fox!!
I think the main issue with StarFox is Miyamoto himself, Rare and Namco have actually pushed the series forward while Miyamoto keeps remaking the original game.
Miyamoto said he runout of ideas for Starfox.
Nintendo should have never interfered with Dinosaur Planet's development.
Nintendo need’s too make a
$30 game that’s strictly on-rail’s with a huge level map , and some beautiful graphic’s ……..
Zero is the only game I haven't played in the Star Fox series, but no matter what I play, I always find myself coming back to the OG SNES Star Fox. I love it more than 64.
Oops, found a new favorite channel.
yo thanks so much i appreciate that!! got more videos coming soon!
Ever since we got that leaked ROM of Dinosaur Planet showing us what could’ve been for that game had RARE stood it’s ground… it’s made me wonder two things:
I still enjoy Adventures and Assault despite their flaws. Much better than Zero
I want to get my hands on a Star Fox game.
WAIT YOU ONLY HAVE 140 SUBS?
You're hella underrated. Have another sub.
yo thanks so much!!
TH-cam algorithm recommended this. Now a subscriber. Great content!
thanks so much!
Miyamoto confirmed that showcasing technology is the only reason Starfox was made.
Star fox assault really had such an amazing story I just wish it was longer maybe 20-30 missions instead of just the normal 10
You lost me at gyro controls
The chad frog eyed Slippy vs the normy round eyed Slippy
