Copeland Hermetic Compressor Oil Change

- The oil level was low due to a leak in the evaporator so i decided to change the oil from mineral to polyol ester oil made by Emkarate SW32MAF which is a specific oil for Copeland compressors.
The oil change from mineral to synthetic helps get the system ready for a change to HFC refrigerants once R22 becomes unavailable.
That tool for the sight glass is cool! Lucky the compressor had that sight glass
Hi Alan,
The dimples in the glass should dissapear once the oil covers them, think its designed to make the level easier to see, this one is dirty despite cleaning (old system)
That is pretty much the procedure, it was pumped down so no refrigerant was released, oil changed, then leak checked with nitrogen prior to vacuuming and letting the refrigerant back in and running up.
It would take three or four changes with a good bit of run time inbetween to get the mineral oil content low enough to change from hcfc or cfc to hfc refrigerants. Idealy it wants to be below 3% mineral oil. Depending on the type of system and pipework configuration you may be able to get away with more mineral oil mixed in with the poe but below 3% is a good figure to aim for.
Oil didnt look too bad...... love the sound of those compressors lol. Thats the first one ive seen with the sight glass on.... as far as a hermetic compressor.
Thanks for video. Very interesting
The oil sight glasses are more common on the refrigeration spec compressors. The level was too low plus i wanted to change it from mineral to POE oil so its a step ahead when R22 runs out!
I wanted to see how much oil came out as the system was low, i'd have had to empty the vacuum oil tank, use it then empty it again to see.
I made the sight glass tool out of an impact grade socket and a bit of unistrut! Couldn't get the proper tool from the wholesalers. Yeah i'd have had to disconnect it and tip it out the suction port otherwise!
What about the oil that would be still around the rest of the system, is it ok to leave it there as it would be a minimal amount?
very very good
Thank you!
Hi, did you make a video on making the sight glass tool ?
I can't remember, will have a look at making one.
Where did you get the tool for removing the sight glass? Will it also work on semi-hermetic compressors?
+Shaun Hand Hi Shaun, I made it. It fits the small copeland oil sightglasses, they are the same in these, some scrolls, and many copeland semi hermetic compressors. I'll try and make a vid of how i made it.
Nice video where can I get the special tool at :-)
Adamis Gomez I think you should be able to get a sight glass tool from Copeland, but i made mine as they unavailable from my local wholesaler. Its just an impact grade socket with a slot cut in and some steel silver soldered in to locate in the slots in the sight glass.
very good
Thanks Salman
I've not lost one yet but theres always a first time.
Looks like a Latte!
hello my friend , are you sale this tool? how can i get one?
Hi Alberto, I made the tool out of a impact socket and a piece of steel, i will make a video of it.
Who sells the tool?
The sight glass tool? I made it from an impact socket that was a snug fit in the sight glass, then cut a slot and brazed a bit of steel in to fit in the grove in the glass. I used an impact socket as there is no chrome to make brazing tricky.
how much to make us one?
I'll make you one and post it to you if you like.
If you are in a hurry as it will likely take me a while to do it, there is a tool called a 'drag link socket' that i think would work as well, i didn't know the existed when i made my socket.
not in a hurry! Let me know when you can do it
used power steering fluid smells just like used hvac compressor oil.
jason heyer Wonder how well it would work in a compressor? Probably be ok in a mineral oil system though maybe a bit thin, had a customer years ago that used to put Duckhams hypergrade in his old belt drive freezer.
heavydiesel my dads friend works for hvac refrigeration and he says it depends what kind of compressor, type of cooling and the run time. most commonly its mineral oil or synthetic with the same consistancy. compressor oil smells like burnt chemicals. i can really include any details because ive never smelled anything that smelled like compressor oil other then used power steering fluid.
Cow? What cow? :P
im sure i heard a cow lol plus it would be a bad day if that hose fell off in there
Didn't taste like it though :-p
Looks messy. Why not suck it with vacuum pump straight to a bottle.
