- This video came as a surprise when I found out why the compressor was not running. Check out the video and let me know what you think. I noticed the compressor fan worked in the first testing but I missed it until editing the video.

Got to love it when the customer was we kept resetting to safety, there is a reason the safety is shutting it down 😂
if u do get to replace it please open the old one up on video and show the inside and all the damage in there
Gen, compressors are sent back in for re-man. Distributer won't accept if compressors are all taken apart. 😮😮
Get some grape jelly, cause that sucker's toast.
😂😅😂
Now that's one toasted semi-hermetic compressor!
Hahahahahaha. Can you repair it.....yes.....yes we can....its called a new compressor....that'll be $xxxxxx please.
I inspected these for warranty claims for bitzer. I can't remember how many i would take the bottom plate off and every rod would be busted. The warranty claim tag would be filled in with DOA, never ran.
Quick tip
working on semi herm. Compressor. Try pumping it down first. You'ld have skipped the oil mess and time first knowing it wasn't working as intended :)
But you were lucky on seeing yhe connecting rod a d piston at the bottom anyway haha !
Nice one 😊
Great video Rick. I’ve had my fair share of exhausted equipment. My favorite part was when you said employee/management reset the Sentronic oil safety. They did that damage lol.
You mean the safety is actually doing is job lol 😂 and the customer is o it tripped I will just reset it. 🤪
They might have, a few times usually means a week or three. 🤣
Wow, I've seen plenty of car engines with Piston Nuggets thanks to another TH-camr, but this is the first time I've seen a compressor with them!
I immediately thought of IDoCars soon as Rick started laughing at the inside of the crankcase here
@@macsignals I was thinking IDoCars as soon as I saw the forbidden glitter in the oil
Would love to see an teardown and analysis of that thing 😂
Semi hermetic are generally very sturdy, but obviously they need all the components, like the oil
It’s incredibly jarring seeing someone with an anime pfp commenting on an hvac video lmao
@@jesse9713 actually it's my OC, but it will be more fun if I told you I'm actually a real girl, I know girl are rare around here 😅
@@jesse9713Just wait till all the new guys at your company are zoomers who wish they were work-from-home coders lol.
Something I cut my teeth on. Used to help strip and rebuild semis as an apprentice including taking them to be rewound. Great way of learning the refrigeration system
Your absolutely right 👍👍
Great job Rick! That's gonna be a fun replacement.
Hopefully we get the job because I left my Refrigeration wrench on the discharge line.
@@HVACRSurvival 😆
Good video thank you for sharing. I had an oil Lock out issue too with a Carlyle O6D and pulled the head and 1 of the 2 pistons was gone lol.
Good work, those old semi Hermetics's used to run for many years with no issues. Thanks for the video.
🤜🤛👍👍
This video brings back memories when l did racks we had a few mom / Pop grocery stores like this store your servings.
I love tool bag! Origination is the key to success!
I love the bag so far but I left my refrigeration wrench 🤦 on the discharge valve. I’m still figuring out where things need placed in the bag and that’s likely how I forgot it.
@@HVACRSurvivalthe most relatable thing I've ever seen in your videos is on a no heat call your tool bag fell and landed upside down. I think you said "I just LOVE it when that happens all over the floor" lol
@@HVACRSurvival Don’t feel bad! I forgot the word “the” in front of “tool bag”. Lol
Looks like a lack of priodic inspections. All the oil came back at once and Hydraulicly locked the crankshaft. Liquid floodback will push that oil out as will continued low pressure operation.
A great teaching video on semi-hermetic failure troubleshooying.. Normally along with the compressor comes a contactor, crankcase heater, a suction line filter, more to stop debris from entering the new compressor. Complete walk through of all the controls.
Thanks for sharing! All valid points👍👍
Oil seems to be a little compressor rich, 50% compressor by weight is too much for your oil.
Worst thing is that compressor has already circulated that lovely glitter all over the system, hopefully a new filter/dryer will catch that, along with long lost oil.
nice job, as soon it fired up, I noticed it was rocking more than it should, so I knew something was wrong inside.
The variety of equipment you repair is impressive
It’s crazy.
That compressor truly sh*t the bed big time, when theres chunks in the sump and no oil prsssure.... And they kept resetting the oil safety cutout instead of shutting it down killed it. 😮
Does that watch do the same warning when around someone's wife for any extended amount of time? 😂🤣😂🤣
Nice video Rick! Those semi hermetics are tanks if properly care for. Back in Oct. I changed a red tag Copeland out dated year 88 on meat prep. They are getting hard to find around Huntsville Al. Usually 2-3 days out. Love the videos brother your doing one hell of a job!
Dang I also found one with the crank shaft broke the other day, already replaced and back in service like the videos brother
🤜🤛👍👍🙏
at first time it starts it was vibrating bad enough which mean you got broken piston
These are the racks I worked on back in the 70s and 80s. Some of them are still running to this day.
I would guess you’re correct. 👍
All of the rest of them need to be serviced.
as always great workmanship
Good job Rick, I was going to say that looked like the piston setting in the oil pan.
so reliable normally, a basic maintenance goes a long way ,it’s very sad to see all the metal shaving
Great job,Rick !
Good job bro keep the content coming
Hard to run a pump without the piston.
Copeland says no warranty unless new oil sending unit and safety control are installed on replacement compressor.
Normally, a new contactor is one of the main thing I’ve always heard. I don’t know if I’ve heard that about the oil pressure switch.
Great Video Rick. Thats crazy how much intenal damage there was.
Tell me about it😄
So was oil level not maintained for years after leaks causing this or is it throughout the system? Looked like there was zero oil in crankcase. What a mess.
Oil wasn’t on the floor so it’s likely pumped it’s self out into the system. With longer run times it will come back. Monitoring is the only thing you can do with a little system like this. This is why racks have oil separators.
About what I'd expect from a Save A Lot n
Great Video. Thank you for sharing. Which Refrigerant semi-Hermetic compressor use ?
Thanks! I don’t understand the question.
Rip poor compressor. Wonder what happened though? Flooded back too much?
It likely tried to start with a non condensable aka liquid refrigerant in area above the head of the piston or got slammed with liquid while running at full speed. (Flooded start vs floss back)
Hope they warrantied that one haha
16:15 side of head is orange. It looks like rust because head was so hot it burned paint and oil with dust to bare cast which starts rusting immediately.
🇺🇸💪👍❄️ looks like ur mining for gold with all that glitter. Great video thanks
Well we can’t make a silk purse out of a hogs ear Captain
😀😂🤟
Is that sand that the compressor is covered in?
No just dirt.
I would quote for a new fan as well , starting with all fresh components for liability purposes.
Trouble is that once you finish with the compressor replacement works you have to open a new can of worms with tryna find out how the last one failed ...
Naa ….get the compressor job and then go back and replace all the other stuff on another bill. That’s always the American way. Everybody wants to be cheap until it cost an arm and a leg.
Wow.
Forbidden Glitter. Never a promising start to any job.
So do you install new compressor with full oil? How do you know the old compressor oil isn't in evaporators?you can try flush lines but then you need to recover whole system
You have to install the compressor with oil at the normal level but would need to stop back and monitor the oil and oil acid levels. This could require oil to be removed or changed. This place was 50 miles from my area so it likely won’t happen. We haven’t heard back yet about authorization so they likely are going to keep being cheap and have it happen again. As you can See the store is low budget food with low budget maintenance.
Can you rebuild that compressor or replace it looks like it's history
All those shavings, that's from flooding?
Flooding takes away oil. What happens when there’s no oil in an engine or in this case a compressor?
@@HVACRSurvival Wild. Maybe some slugging too if the crankshaft got busted up?
@@Spruce-Bug correct, you can’t compress a liquid. That’s what likely snapped it off.
@@HVACRSurvival Good to know. Thanks for replying. I'll be extra sure to verify low ambient suction pressure from now on lol
on todays episode of "how its made" were making anti seize
did you change out the compressor?
Yes I did. It’s still running
I honestly thought you worked for yourself but now in the past few months you have put out rack videos. Do you not work for yourself? Did you transfer to a new company and start full time rack work?
I work for a company that does everything under the sun. We have over 100 employees. That’s how I can be doing residential one day and doing an industrial call the next then maybe I’ll finish it out with some food service equipment and a generator. We have welders auto mechanics, plumbers engineers, architects, electricians, blah blah blah blah blah I was supposed to get into grocery and industrial Several years ago but it’s been delayed. Thanks to people in front of me. Those people are now not in the way as much as what they were.
Hope you get to to work on whatever you want, and continue to share what you can.
It doesn't all apply to what I do but enjoy learning what I can.
Gracias caballero!
Out of curiosity, how many hours does it take to dissassemble and and install a new compressor take? Also, is this compressor complete junk at this point or will it end up with being rebuilt and resold as a refurb down the road?
The factory will rebuild it, not us. Depending the distance, the job is from the shop plus the labor that is calculated that’s how we would come up with the price changing one of those compressors doesn’t take long because you can valve off the high side and low side and just unbold it, but there could be other issues, there could be pieces of stuff in the refrigerant lines that gets caught into other components, but we usually will put in there a clause that says those are extra cost that may happen, but not covered under this quote.
What was the reason for the compressor not getting oil? No compression because motor overheated because improper fan cycling? Am I understanding that correct?
It could have been short cycling due to valves and piston issues. If so then that will pump out the oil.
Would love an update on the new compressor. Got a lot of noob experience changing those damn rack compressors at my old job and learned a bit about the controls. Not enough. Oil system I didn’t understand feeding between multiple compressors, when it comes to troubleshooting. I know we changed one compressor for oil issues and it didn’t last long. Being a noob I wasnt there for service and never found out what was wrong. Rack compressor changeouts are quite a chore between two people is my experience. Darn costco
Ahh, the magic glitter has been released. 😂 always a good sign........not
lol 😂
That is a dirty comp room. Looks like they aren't having regular maintenance or the last company didn't do much. So many places are reactive only on breakdowns about their systems and proper maintenance is never done.
This is a newer account to us and not in my normal area. I don’t think p.m. was done ever unless broken.
That's what you'd call engine-rich oil. Very expensive.
Looks like a piston.
everyone should automatically "quote" the cooling fan, cycling switches/controls(wiring?) as part of a failed compressor replacement. cover your hind quarters 🤔
We haven’t heard from them yet so that’s the reason why we have to be selective. Under biding is a problem
It came from togetherness
If you have a call like this do you later patronize the store by buying items on your grocery list? And especially at the end/last call/only call of the day where you can buy perishable items. I likely would, basically a 2 birds with 1 stone opportunity.
I do at times, more so at the ice cream stands where they actually know me.
PM PROGRAM????????????
No, such thing with this place.
Time to upgrade
Should just replace all the controls. Prevent a future callback.
Can’t hear u bruh too loud in the background
It depends on what I’m listening on. Sometimes it sounds ok on the phone and sounds bad on the computer. But it’s 90 plus db in the room, with that set up I was using normally does good in that environment because the mic is pointed at me. But there are times when it’s stationary that I don’t switch the mic because it’s a short sentence and I could forget to switch the mic back and that’s how one of the more recent videos has really bad audio.
That sure is some "pretty" oil! LOL.....
OMG - commented too quickly - it also has spare parts built in? Beautiful!!!! - HAHAHA
It grenaded
75 thumbs up
Nice job & nice vid ... Thx for sharing your expertise
R.I.P. compressor(whole rack is clearly spanked out). if they're individual circuits then replace compressor, install giant filters and move on. if combined/grouped, oh dear lord help them.(remember that was College engineering(long ago) not much has changed, do you trust them as a working field grunt? 🧐🥳🥸
