I have the iloud MTMs as secondary pair, but i do only switch now and then to them (i can not work too long on them) - translation was quite good, even better than HEDD Type20...
Dumped genelecs for og mtms years ago. Then moved to mtm precisions year and half ago as they were announced. Trust me, you wont regred buying mtm p’s. My personal experience with this monitors - simply wow. Dreaming of 9.1.4 atmos setup built on mtm p’s.
Very accurate and translate well. Not fatiguing for me as long as no vocals are involved. At first I was underwhelmed, but once my ears adjusted, I quickly came to love them. For me they work best with the room-correction, but I know some producers that prefer no correction - this is in incredible rooms though. I think for your room Precision 6s would totally do, but I still want you to review the big MTMs, so I hope they'll send you those. Use case: Most of my work is with bass-heavy instrumentals, atmospheric chords (far back, not up front) and little call and response melodies that keep their heads ringing. Not many tracks in my sessions. By the way: I think it's not actually the speakers that are fatiguing, it's how incredibly loud, high-end and mid-range heavy most vocals get mixed nowadays. Abnoxious (to me)! But take that with a couple grains of salt.. I'm the odd one out, bc I don't like too much high-end (no matter the speaker or headphone).
I love them. I had a problem pusching the low end to much in the beggining. It's funny you mention the harschness cause I feel the same. But after listening on a lot of different headphones I feel that many mixes today are quite harsch so maybe they are showing the truth 😅
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these mate! Through budget challenges I've had to use the ilouds as a main. I haven't had the opportunity to try other larger speakers yet so hearing your thumbs up on these is a big comfort lol. And also if you end up liking the larger ones it will help direct to the next upgrade. Really appreciate your work!
Paul something that has bugged me about my ilouds is a resonanc that is happening in one of the speaker ports. It resonates the unit itself at a certain low frequency. So keep an eye out to see if that happens on these new ones. It's happening on the monitor with the cables attached. It happens even when i listen to you so you could listen to this video and keep an eye out for it.
been an iloud fan from the first line of iloud micro. Now i have one pair of micros, two pair of mtms (mki and mkii) and i'm waiting for this new little beasts. They all translate incredible, even in untreated rooms. Can't live without them, especially the micros
My micro MM (regular basic version for $350) will arrive tomorrow, I'm currently using a Kanto YU4 and needed something smaller but still suitable for PC speakers - listening to music, playing games, watching videos. How would you rate micro in these tasks? Should I pick them up tomorrow or should I give up in favor of something else? I saw a lot of good options, but they were all even bigger than my Kanto YU4s. I can also add that I have a poorly prepared room, I don't do sound work, it's my regular room and the desk is in the corner, that's why I chose the micro because of their front invert in the hope of more adequate bass (my Kanto Yu4s have a rear invert and I can't handle them in some tasks, the bass is too loud).
Great information, thanks Paul. I have a tiny studio on my narrowboat, been using the original micros for several years and been getting great translation. They became noticeably better after I treated my room and I do feel I need a couple of pairs of headphones to complement them, however I recently made some tunes for a pro rapper and the mixes translated well for him.
I had the MTM version and they were really good for mixing. Sadly had to sell em by covid financial problems . But im looking forward to get a new pair again. I remember i used to take em with me back and forth different houses and rooms , they always gave me the best sound after calibration. Awesome speakers 👍🏻
I wouldn't mix solely on them. As I said in the video, definitely a second reference monitor. Stereo image is OK but nothing spectacular. Think of these more for judging your center image and transients. Levels are easy to judge as they are so forward with great phase coherence but don't expect to be able to hear every nuance of reverb tails and stuff. Bit like presonus eris where they can be a bit shouty with not much depth but they definitely offer things that can help you judge certain aspects of a mix. Low end is quite artificial and sounds forced but tbh I don't fully recommend mixing low end on speakers anyway, Headphones are the best judge for that
Hi Paul, have you ever heard the ADAM Audio T8Vs? I have them, very satisfied with them for what they are, especially after careful time alignment & room correction (done myself in REW). I'm really curious how these iLouds would compare and whether or not they would make a good secondary monitoring setup in your opinion.
Ahhh, damn, I guessed wrong. I thought they would send you a pair of precisions. But strategically it was probably wise of them, because the result/expectation ratio is best on on the small ones. I can't say I ever heard coloring on iLouds (I don't have the very small ones though). The regular MTMs (not the big Precisions) will start to fall apart in the low-lows when you push them hard enough or have the kind of 808 that hits just the frequency it can't handle well. However, I don't listen very loud and I like very flat frequency-responses - so I don't push lows or cut highs (that's just what works for me). I wonder how you'd rate the big MTMs - or any speakers from the precision series for that matter. I agree, transients are awesome on all iLouds I've heard. The bigger versions don't lack depth. But it takes a little bit of time to "figure out" depth with fast Snares or Snaps (not an issue with regular instruments). But once you do, you do (in my experience).
I've had the original micro's for years now. I still love them. Although the port issue around 55-50hz does my head in at times lol. Hopefully they fixed the issue on these new ones. Love that they added the calibration to the speaker on these.
@@PaulThird On the original Ilouds (can’t speak for the new ones), but around the cut off of the speaker the port would produce a crazy sound. Can likely find loads of examples of it on TH-cam as it was a huge flaw in the older ones. Certain kicks and basses would just sent the speaker crazy. But I reckon with the new ones being able to go twice as loud, they likely would have fixed that issue. At least I hope so. I know the MTM’s didn’t have the same issue due to the bigger port. But yeah, fingers crossed they fixed it on these newer ones.
I had the first Micro Monitors as my travel speakers, and then got the MTM MKIIs when they came out. If you like the Micros, the MTMs MKIIs were considerably better than that (and up yet more notches with ARC!). I'd love to try the Precisions at some point because I love the sound of their technology now, and those must be a massive step-up too. It's weird that something so small can be so trustworthy, but as you say mixes made with them do translate really well (obviously, with second opinion from headphones).
Thanks for the Video! - i am curious about your comparism to the HEDD Type 20 - because i finally switched from the Type 20 to Focal Shapes65 - ;) - because of translation issues and the latency of the lineariser (which i find necessary) - have a nice day!!!

On the ARC i have a question: the specific characteristics of an individual mic, even within the same model, will vary. For a measurement mic, every subtle variation matters, especially since we're deriving a corrective eq curve from it. Sonarworks addresses this by measuring the frequency response of every single mic they send out, and they include a serial code that identifies the measurement results as a 'calibration profile'. When the user is setting up sonar works room eq, the software asks for this code, the matching calibration profile from sonarworks is loaded, and the corrective eq curve is calculated based on the measurement of both the speaker and the microphone. I was wondering If ARC also takes into account variance between mics. If there are no identifiers included with the mic, they're probably using an average curve for the measurement mic model they provide. It's always going to be a little less precise. Practically speaking the result may still be usable, but it just means different people having more variable results
ARC mics are pretty well standardised. ARC4 takes the mic being used into consideration with it's correction. That's why it asks which mic is being used prior to calibration. However whilst the sonarworks mic will theoretically on paper offer more consistency, it doesn't make any real difference to the end result or my final conclusion so it's a moot point

There's no software to run on the DAW as it's stereo only. The speaker calibration is done per speaker, on the speaker itself. so I don't know how the delay compensation can be correct so everything is correctly time alligned. Sonarworks uses phase measurements and calculates the delays by calibrating all speakers as a complete setup. The sub will need it's own correction so you'll have to manually do everything which is gonna be a pain unless you use an ARC4 box for the sub. @TigroGumi dude your gonna have a ball ache on your hands. You are gonna have to calculate all the time alignment yourself, manually calibrate the sub (unless you use ARC4 box) and calculate all the trims yourself (which tbf should only take 15-20 mins via pink noise method) I have a kali ws6.2 which acts as bass management for the entire setup. Every speaker has a crossover of 120hz if I recall correctly and via sonarworks immersive and ORIA I was able to calibrate each speaker with the sub crossover enabled during calibration so all the measurements incorporate the cross over. The LFE is still calibrated as part of the process so that calibration takes over but it means that the crossover is correctly included within the speaker calibration. Time alignment is crucial in atmos. If you fuck up your placement, gain, and time alignment.. Game over. Sonarworks multi-channel allows me to put an overall eq over every speaker which was really necissary for me due the high end build up of the flat calibration. Doing that with the iloud bundle is gonna be annoying because you are going to have to manually eq each speaker in the apogee app. I'm pretty sure ilouds default to flat correction which is just needlessly bright. Theres just going to be a lot of workarounds to figure out with that whole setup
Thank you Paul. I really trust your reviews, you are always a trustable guide for the products. I will open a new music studio in Montenegro, Podgorica with a small control room. Your last videos helped me too much❤ I wanted to thank you. I think we have same mentor with the name of Emrah Çelik. Thanks to him
I have the iloud micro’s and use them as additional reference monitors but I had to collaborate them using Sonarworks which has improved sound, but I found them to be noisy as in hum, (which I have read others report).so use them less now. The new model seems to have been improved a great deal, but if I was spend around that price point I think I would more lean towards the Kali IN-UNF, which I saw your review of also. Do you notice any hum coming from the ilouds at all?
No hum. I did a lot A/B and I preferred the iloud for secondary reference. I was swaying as I like the low end and smooth top of the satellites in the IN-UNF but I knew that the forwardness and transients of the iloud were more useful for translation. I'm fortunate though as I have a treated live room so just moved them in there so I can still use them
@@PaulThird well that is good that there is no hum coming from new version, as it drives me bonkers! So I switch mine on less and less. Also it would seem that everything was contained within one speaker in my version, but this has been distributed across both speakers in the pro, so I would think that has some bearing on noise reduction too. Now the forwardness is something that has swayed me because that is what I am after. My compact home studio does have some GIK bass panels but i am limited in what I can do, due to space constraints. But that bass speaker with IN-UNF is appealing because I do not have a sub and so have been using the Sundara’s to check low end currently. Gotta say, Paul I really love your videos and I have come to really trust your opinion on gear. I have significantly reduced the number of videos and opinions I now watch and am influenced by, but yours are solid. Just wanna say a huge thank you pal.

Although, I’m very dependent of the hope I can control my cross-over and the level of the sub via the apogee interface so that it’ll be possible to fit well… a sub made by them might not actually be better so we will see… but if I get the bundle it’ll be a good subject to cover… might inspire the company to also make subwoofers lol
@TigroGumi dude your gonna have a ball ache on your hands. You are gonna have to calculate all the time alignment yourself, manually calibrate the sub (unless you use ARC4 box) and calculate all the trims yourself (which tbf should only take 15-20 mins via pink noise method)
I have a kali ws6.2 which acts as bass management for the entire setup.
Thanks to him
Emrah is a legend 😎
Honestly Get ARC 4 (software) it's better in every way. I have both but ditched Sonarworks.
@@eranddroory9987 thanks for the advice.i ditched Sonarworks on my headphones and main monitors. But only have it in place for the iLouds (which I rarely use now). Am using Neumann MA 1 which is a vast improvement on KH80’s main.
In curios how does it compared to mixing with avantone, and is it possible to get comparison between those two side by side.
I'm looking for some portable options, it's tiring to do stuff on IEMs and headphones on the road all the time.
I'd choose iloud as you can calibrate them to whatever room you are in which is very important
@@PaulThird Fair point, in all honesty i was leaning on that side even before. It was just by pure accident that PRO version was releasead on the same day i went to google up "micros". (Coincidence? Destiny?)
And not having a power brick is also a huge deal for my backpack :D
P.S.
Thank you for fast feedback and i hope you are having a nicer mixing weather then we here in Wales xD
Hey Paul, thanks for the review I was hoping you would check them out! The old model used to make a lot of noise when playing a 50Hz sine wave, which made the case vibrate, not a great experience. Your review was awesome! I'm really curious to hear your thoughts on the MTM's.
The modern replacement for the old az 1029a ? (8020?)
It seems, IK have found a market... And reviews are good
Try Present Day Productions MUM monitors! It will change your life!
the speakers I got is my dual 18 inch pa subwoofer that is 6400watts and plays at 138db but I used them for my sub bass when I make bass music for mixing tbh no cap
I think the best ones they have are the iLod MTMs, not these new Micros Pro. Best travel speakers ever!!
Nice review
So what did you mix on these monitors?
Pre mixed a few tracks for the podcast, tried a few client recalls and checked some of my most recent mixes
This is good, but I think the precisions need more reviews!
I agree!!
What do you mean when you say "phase coherent"?
both speakers reach your ears evenly at the same time.
Good Gordis!!!!
It's a bit of a stupid move as well as a underhanded moved to promote their new monitors which are very different to simply upscale to the precision line.
Not sure if it was brave or clever.... (thoughts before the video)
They didn't turn you off, so that says something.
The Hedd one's coming I had dreamed about for a while but have had changes in mind... but, not via real world testing so will be nice to see your opinions on those
I've had the original MTMs since around 2020 and they're awesome, although I'm dreading the day the electronics die and IK refuses me support.
Hulooo Pull Thrrrrd!
If you like fast and forward, please do yourself a favour and try the Kii three or Kii 7. Best investment I ever made, and after a few years with them I just take translation for granted. If It sounds good here then its just a great average...
I'd rather go on holidays with the family. Way too expensive
@@PaulThird I got a sound design job after a client heard my work on them that paid for them in one go XD
You got a 13 grand sound design gig... I'm in the wrong line of work! 🤣
@@PaulThird Its no secret that TV commercials, industry audio and film post pays better than music! Getting a single series means 3-8 weeks of work.
They cost as my avantone abbey ..bit expensive. The Abbey is toss and bair with barefoot.I am not fan of those type of tweeters i had genelec before they are crazy fatiguing. The avantone sounds so expensive like u are in ultra hi fi cinema u can work 24 hours zero issues with fatigue
Try the Quested range 😊
Good bit out of my budget haha
@@PaulThird Sell your car, good for the environment 😂
I have a fully electric car... Haha
@@PaulThird You can sell those too 😀
MTM isn't 3-way
I know, my mouth spoke before my brain
Been there 😂

Helo illumiati brethren.
9:22 You went a bit over the Highlands right here. You had to change everything because the […] lie to you, it’s not supported by Dolby anymore?
