  • We all know the benefits of lithium, that’s why it's so popular right? But how does it last… under the bonnet of your 4WD
    In this episode, I am reviewing my iTechWorld 120X lithium battery that has spent 12 months under the bonnet, engine bay mounted in my Landcruiser 200 series.
    This is the second review after my 6 month update. In this episode we cover some of the same topics including, testing conditions, usage, physical condition, re-charge characteristic and of course the all important capacity test.
    I hope this video can help you to determine whether or not a lithium battery, particularly a under bonnet setup will be right for your setup.

    Thanks for the seconds term review. I recently got one of these for my 150 and so far its been brilliant and functions great. The 20 kg weight saving is awesome as well. ill be looking into one of their lithium start batteries soon now that redarc sell a simple solution to suit lithium start and their DCDC chargers. 👍

    Congrats again Nathan, superb 12 month run down & again fully testing in like for like comparison, just totally different location, tripping around. You're one switched on smart cookie.
    I'm currently out and about like you, but no van in sight hence our 120X powering accessories in van at home, haha.
    We're going remote, so Patrol only with 1420CAPro starter and 3 x 54amp (162amp) auxiliary and like you it's all just over 12 months old. Like you, these are not in a weekend warrior, we live from our Patrol daily, corrugations, humidity, it's subjected to it all daily.
    Love all benefits of lithium, especially the induction cooking when the wind is not viable for gas burners. Our one ultimate luxury, coffee M/C coffee each morning, takes life to new level for first hour of the day, haha.
    Looking forward to 1420CAPro 12 month testing.
    Regards.

      And I'm very glad to hear positive results with your setup.
      I can say that my 1420CA PRO has been ticking along very nicely in the cruiser. Will only become more interesting as we head into harsher and hotter climates up north 👍

    I have the poverty pack AGM batteries (x 2) that came standard with my van Nathan. I just run the Toyota standard battery in my Prado. They are doing the task well enough for my needs at the moment. Another top class review mate! I would buy this gear based on your recommendation if I had the spare coin to justify the purchase. Why do you run your driving lights off the auxiliary battery? The dcdc charger is then having to power them instead of the alternator directly. If you do a fair amount of night driving you’re using 20 amps of your dcdc chargers output to power the lights instead of charging the battery

    I replaced the BMS in mine. After it became a flooded lithium. I still use it today. The Cells are A1+. I still have 104 Ah after 2 years now.

    Great video again Nathan. I love my new 120X Pro I recently put in my Engel portable battery box - working flawlessly as expected. Just wondering - why was your battery taken out of your cruiser for two months? You've had no dramas with it and you recommend it to others, just curious why it would come out of your car? Testing something else? Cheers

      Yes, the battery only came out because I've replaced it with the newer iTechWorld 120X PRO.

I will be studying your videos when the time comes re: starter/crank battery and setup. Thanks again!

    Hi, can I ask where you bought your heat insulation from and what type it was? And was it any good i.e. what percentage of the heat did it reflect? I have just purchased the battery and I'm really trying to figure out what the best heat protection option is for under the bonnet. Cheers Brendan

    Thanks for the review Nathan. I Just purchased an Itech 120x pro for my 200 series aux, I have the standard Toyota hold down bracket which was on my AGM but the Itech 120x pro is taller so it sticks up in the air on the front side? not sure if i can modify it to fit so wondering what you have done or used. Also do you think this battery can handle an ARB twin compressor to air up every now and then, will manly be running our 40ltr engle which lives in the car while travelling.

    Thanks Nathan for your report. I would like to believe that you have heard of thermal runaway in lithium iron phosphate batteries and for that I would not entertain one in under bonnet application. Will Itech World cover you if your 200 series goes up in smoke due to a faulty lithium battery? 😢

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey mate, yes I am familiar with Thermal Runaway, however LifePO4 batteries are much more resilient to this than standard Lithium Ion batteries. In fact, these would need to get to about 270 degrees before this were to become an issue.
      In relation to a warranty claim, well I guess that would need to be tested. 🤷‍♂️

    • @ajf9034
      @ajf9034 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you’re charging the battery with a regulated charge current like a dcdc charger there would be no issue of thermal run away unless there was a major internal fault in the battery which the bms should stop anyway with its protection features. I’ve seen plenty of lead acid batteries explode.

  • @ausguy4385
    @ausguy4385 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thats 22% less 12 months of from new claimed figures.
    Think this is 99% were people are stuck on....
    Will 24months be the same? Or will the 7% from your first test repeat.
    2 more year at 7% your battery will be flat in your avg draw let along with age it will decrease faster.
    The fact you have replaced it already properly adds a heap of fuel to fire they are bad...
    Even the DCS reviewers have all replaced batteries more then once then want use to believe it will last 3 years plus 😅

  • @drgloverable

    Estimating 1 80% DOD discharge per day (which is probably much harder than you are using it)... thats 365 cycles. The specs say 4000+ cycles for 80% DOD; the industry standard for this spec is 80% capacity remaining (or 20% loss of capacity). You are way way off that trajectory at 7% loss in 12 months.
    Also, the battery didnt even meet it advertised spec at new. In this case your battery shows its not likely to meet its advertised specs. You say you are happy with this solution.... good that happiness is an emotion.... At least you might be under 80% within the warranty period and hopefully try to get a new one.
    Can you clarify - are you sponsored by itech?

    • @GR8Tmate
      @GR8Tmate ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you watch the episode from start to finish? Wouldn’t you think if he was sponsored by itechworld that he wouldn’t have paid $1000 for the battery? Perhaps comprehension isn’t your strongest suit or maybe you just have an axe to grind 🤔

    • @GR8Tmate

      @@PittsFly 🤣 Yeah, okay buddy, I’m not sure Nathan will ever stack up to be much of an influencer. If he tests something & it doesn’t do well he calls it out and it’s my understanding that he refuses to dance to the tunes of the companies, which is why he pays for stuff. I’d go as far as saying that Nathan is an awful
      Influencer 😂
      There are plenty of other larger channels on YT that go about things the way you describe but I think your barking up the wrong tree in this case.

    • @drgloverable
      @drgloverable ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GR8Tmate Geez mate.. Chill. He said he paid for the battery. I asked if he was sponsored (which could look different from getting this battery for free). Think you've made an assumption, confused it with fact, got fired up and flared up at me.
      What has been presented is a seemingly glowing review of a product that, by his own measurements, does not meet its documented specs. No axe. Facts.

    • @GR8Tmate
      @GR8Tmate ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@drgloverable Since I’m here responding to MR AGM, I will just say this and I obviously can’t speak for the creator that runs this channel.
      Let’s face it, this guy could have told us anything, he could have fudged the results and told us the battery was much better than it was but he didn’t. It’s supposed to be 100 amp hour. It apparently first tested at 99. I’ve never actually seen a battery test at exactly it’s claimed output but then again it’s not something I spend much time doing.
      If it dropped from 99 to 93.2 (or 93.4 - can’t be bothered checking again), it’s dropped closer to 5 than 7 from what it originally tested. If Nathan was trying to fudge the facts he would have just told us it dropped 2. Honestly kudos to him for calling it what it was. There’s plenty of other YT channels doing the influencer thing but I don’t think this is one of those channels.
      From my experience of watching this channel, he calls it how it is, if he gets given something he tells us. I’m fairly certain the guy doesn’t make his crust from pedalling crap on YT, this is the channel where he goes weeks on end without releasing an episode because he’s out on the road, in the bush living the scene and the channel isn’t paying his way which is why you don’t see a Patreon, various other social media formats and merch.
      I find it amusing that everytime one of these battery episodes come out people descend to make all sorts of accusations. I don’t think he is sponsored.
      Anyway, forget about these itecworld batteries and check out flyboys upcoming channel, he’s onto these amazing AGM’s that will out perform everything, they’re apparently mini nuclear power plants 🙄🤣
      If the guy is sponsored I will stand corrected, until then I think your barking up the wrong tree. I am certain if the battery fails suddenly, he will call it.
      Cheers 👍🏻

      @@GR8Tmate mate, you've done it again. Made some assumptions, made a story up (Inspite of evidence that the battery doesn't meet specs... Which you've got wrong btw). I'm a physicist by training. We measure stuff and then offer the most objective conclusion based on all the data.... Not the bits that make us happy. It's about bias. I'm asking the questions to uncover if there could be a bias or not.
