    Its a long time ago but I still remember the trip and fall in 1984 and the tears. I really felt desperately sorry for her that day, when years of work and dedication are for nothing because of a silly clash of feet.

    This is quintessential Mary Decker. She ran like this when she was 14, competing against college-age women like Francie Larrieu. She would take the lead and let the others draft on her shoulder, but always maintaining the lead. Then as the race heated up towards the end, she would run just fast enough to stay ahead with a good finishing kick. That strategy served her very well over the years.

    I grew up in the same town as Mary Decker in Glen Gardener, NJ in the 1970's and part of the 1980's. Our town had a tradition of National and World Class runners. Mary was the best in 1983 and 1985 and set multiple world and national records. I met Ron Tabb and her current husband the shot putter from the UK. I went on to become a Two-Time All-American and a World Class ranked runner having competed for New Balance,Etonic,and Kanagroos National Racing Teams from 1981 to 1984.

    In case some of you don't know, this was the 1983 World Track and Field Championships. It was the first one ever held. They held them again in 1987 and in 1991, and they have been held in all odd numbered years since. the U.S. boycotted the 1980 Olympics and the Soviet Union boycotted in 1984 so this was the one and only important 3000 meters in which all the greatest runners participated in the early 80's which was Mary's era. Be sure to watch the 1500 meters in these Championships if you still question Mary's greatness.

      @C B S Zaitseva looks like a man. Like a gross smelly sheepdog. Glad Mary beat her for sure. I hate the runners who look like men with wigs. I get many/most of them doped, and that is fine since it was the times, but atleast put on make up, fix your hair up, and make an attempt to look slightly feminine and attractive. Even Flo Jo did that, LOL!

    In the world of track and field, the T&F World Championships is the equivalent of the Olympics, just not as much hype or fanfare. So
    Mary Decker did achieve success at the pinnacle of her field. That is worth celebrating.

    Mary Decker still holds ARs in the 1500m, mile, 2000m, and 3000m, records that have lasted years and will continue to stand for years to come. Hopefully, not far from the future, we can see an athlete that not only has that amazing talent but also has the love Mary Decker had for the sport.

      I have always appreciated his unique point of view and take on things as a commentator as well! I found it especially so in that he has great moments over the years in explaining specifics that are either pros's or cons in a race in a way that the average lay person can understand. One great example I always think of is something I would consider somewhat out of his league (as a long distance guy) was his pointing out in 88 at Seoul just how well Evelyn Ashford was as a track relay runner. you can find that on youtube and its really just to simple yet brilliant in the way he explains it- she was literally given the baton onto her pinkies by FloJo het didn't let herself get flustered. I would not have otherwise noticed this as none of the other commentators seemed to take notice.

    however, given the year the American woman have had in 2009, there are more shooting stars creeping closer 2 her records.
    Jenny Barringer & Christin Wurth-Thomas both ran 3:59 1,500s. Shannon Rowbury & Anna Willard are right around 4 minutes.
    Barringer's best at steeplechase but has 5,000m speed so i wouldn't be surprised if they threaten her 2 & 3K records soon.

    • @tylerbam7183
      @tylerbam7183 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When could she have won gold.
      1976- No way. Kazankina (in her prime, not a frail weak old lady years past her prime like here) was way too strong in the 800 or 1500 for her to beat. The times in those races were insanely fast from 4 or 5 women too. I doubt she can even medal in either event. Maybe in a 3000 pr 5000 she would have a chance but that wasn't in the Games yet.
      1980- Could not beat Kazankina in the 1500 again, and she didnt' even run the 800 typically. The first 3000 was not until 1984. Maybe a silver or bronze in the 1500.
      1984- She didn't win the 1500 at her own Olympic Trials so she isn't winning that even if she runs it. Maybe the 3000, that was her only real shot of an Olympic Gold ever, but even there Puica was in top form and would have made it very close even if Mary had not fallen. She would have to take it out with 600 left to take the finishing kick out of Puica or she would lose.

A whole bunch of Soviets too, Masterkova who was a huge drugs cheat, I think that Kazankina girl who Mary beat here way past her prime and not running her best event, but who is a 3 time Olympic Champ in 76 and 80 from 800 and 1500 metres but a huge disgraceful drugs cheat who held some WRs until recently (when you hold a WR for 40 years something is probably wrong), that Soviet heptathlete who was later found to be a man or something is in. @@mstrunn Being inducted in the Hall of Fame does not mean one was clean right through their career. Carl Lewis, as we now know, failed drug tests before the Seoul Games and he's in the Hall of Fame. That's a really absurd defence of Mary Decker in a discussion on drug usage.

    • @mstrunn
      @mstrunn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dee-zy5gh Apparently you did not understand what I said, Mary never had a problem with drug tests her entire career until she took that now defunct test when she was on Birth control pills, that test gave false positive results for several women and the test was barred. You also misread when I stated she was REINSTATED. As far as Carl Lewis; you don't know if he tested positive, there are rumors that's all, do you have a copy of the 1988 blood test results? I'm sure you weren't even born yet, I lived the era there is nothing you can tell me about Carl or Mary, lay off her she is the greatest female mid distance runner in US history to date. You want to talk about drug usage, talk about Regina Jacobs, and the Russians who we do know for certain were on drugs, show me proof not your ill informed speculation.

    • @Dee-zy5gh
      @Dee-zy5gh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mstrunn No, I don’t have a copy of Carl Lewis’ failed drug tests. But Lewis himself admitted it, so it must be true:)))
      And let’s talk hard facts. Mary Decker was banned in 1997 by the IAAF for a high T/E ratio in her 1996 Olympics trials urine sample. Two years later, USA Track & Field cleared her. IAAF allowed her to compete while the case went to arbitration. Mary LOST the case. IAAF then imposed a retroactive ban, stripping her of her 1997 World Championship silver medal. Mary filed a suit against the IAAF and US Olympic Committee, but the court ruled that it had no jurisdiction. She appealed, but the verdict was upheld. So you see, Mary Decker was never exonerated. As of today, her medal at 1997 World Championship does not stand, her time is not recognised, and she is officially a cheat.
      PS: Love how you assumed I was born much later. I watched all the track events of the 1984 Olympics on TV, including the famous Budd-Decker race where Mary fell because of her own stupidity and then cried like a spoilt child.

    The last ten seconds of the race should have been filmed better.
    The camera operator zoomed in too much and then you couldn’t see her out pace the other racers. There was no one else to compare Mary’s speed to. Then when the control room moved to another camera, that camera was zoomed out too far. The problem was the operator of the first camera zooming in on her. Sure zoom in some, but show at least two other racers.

      @@mstrunn It is you who is clueless if you don't know the 80s were the all time height of doping in track and field, particularly on the womens side. Florence Griffith Joyner, Marita Koch, Ben Johnson, Linford Christie, Valerie Brisco Hooks, the entire GDR and Soviet teams, Jarmila Kratchilova, the list goes on forever, and those are just the most obvious ones. Every WR from 100 metres to 800 metres and some of the field events too. Until 2015 when some started to follow nearly even female track and field WR was from the 80s. That is not normal in any sport.
      So if you truly believe the 80s weren't a time when virtually everyone was heavily juiced, especialy the women, then you are probably on drugs yourself. Tell me do you also consider Flo Jo, Marita Koch, Jarmila Kratchilova, Jackie Joyner Kersee, or Decker's old rivals Tatiana Kazankina and Tatyana Dorovskikh clean? Please answer yes, I could use a good laugh. Flo Jo was so juiced it killed her by 40, ouch. Marita Koch was so juiced she is running times in the 400, the greatest 400 metre runner Maree Jose Perec who has infinitely more talent and better technique than Koch could not come anywhere near 20 years later. The 70s and 80s were just a huge steroids farce by everyone, worse on the female side than the mens.
