A standing ovation, and rightfully so!! What an amazing talent she was. I had always looked up to her. Looking back now, and reliving the past brings tears to my eyes. You will for ever and the day be a heroine of many Zola. Thank you for being humble throughout your career. God bless.
I was there , one thing I loved about the crystal palace is you can watch from the crystal palace station walk way down to the stadium and crystal palace park zoo terrace and indoor athletics terrace. Behind the scoreboard. This was one of the best ever meetings because it was really packed with crowds even between the gaps of jubilee and main stands which I have never seen before.
Like a lot of young men then, I had an enormous crush on Zola, as lissome a lass as ever was or ever will be. In fact, I think all the guys I ran with were at least a little in love with Miss Budd, the barefoot waif from South Africa. Can anyone blame us? At eighteen years old (as here) the svelte Zola stood five feet two inches tall and weighed shy of ninety pounds. Just a slip of a girl, yet she generated extraordinary power. A true prodigy. And cute as a button in the bargain. Alas, a cruel world beat her up, as it has done to so many, even the greats. Especially the greats. One wonders how many more records Zola might have set if not for the vile political vilification of a schoolgirl and the disheartening incident in the Olympics. Decades later, after family tragedy and marital difficulties, Zola started a new life and found happiness near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where she lived for twelve years. In November 2021, Zola and her family returned to South Africa. The strange saga of this lovely girl has come full circle. Surely I'm not the only man who never fell out of love with Zola Budd.
Todd yes i share your boyhood crush on Zola growing up in Cape Town i was privileged to see her break the 5000m world record in 1983. I was standing as a spectator in the 8th lane at Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch on a barmy summers evening and to this day apart from her monumental accomplishment i will never forget how small she looked every time she wizzed past me. I hope she realises how she is loved and admired by so many.
Wow I was there that day, my school sent a load of us to look after the Athletes clothes while they were competing. Thrilled to see me and my friends at 7.17. I've still got her's and Christina Boxer's autographs from that evening. Amazing to see it again after so long, thanks for sharing.
Wow you have a video proof you were in a memorable moment in sports history! That is fantastic! Btw are you the second one from the left? I think 4 in your group right?
ZOLA DIDN'T EXACTLY OUTSRINTED HER RIVALS,,,SHE WORE THEM OUT,,, TOTALLY!!!!! AND JUST KEPT GOING At just over 66'6 per lap in barefoot back in 1984 is ASTONISHING!!!!!!!!
@@simonedwards5564 That is true but she did show obvious turns of speed during that last lap. She reacted several times to Benning and Boxer coming up to her shoulder.
Thanks for uploading that race, I watched it at the time but haven't seen it since. I knew the result and my memory of the race itself was good. What surprised me was the way the paparazzi were allowed to chase her around the track after the race. It is all so much more controlled today. I agreed with her decision to run in Britain. International politics is a long term business. A career in athletics is so brief that politics should not be allowed to interfere.
Her Dad basically made the decision for her to compete for the UK. She was still just a teenager. She lived for a long time in the US and recently moved back to South Africa.
It is amazing that she was able to run so fast without shoes and with such an odd running form. She appears to swing her arms across her body instead of moving them in the same direction she is running.
I used to watch her practice on my school grounds on the west rand before she became world famous, she was so young and talented, it was strange seeing her again 25 years later sitting on a bench looking out at the sea, on the Eastern Cape Coast, could not help thinking what was going on in her mind, how time flys
And our own Sonia O'Sullivan (I'm Irish ! ) beat Zola Budd's record 10 years later at Crystal Palace :-). Sonia clocked 5.25 and within weeks she had also produced a new European record at 3,000m.
Except Zola's record was broken in a race at Crystal Palace in '86 with Maricica Puica, Yvonne Murray and Zola Budd getting 3rd. Sonia O'Sullivan broke Maricica's record. In that '86 race Zola was very injured, it's surprising she ran that well. There is a video of that last lap of the '86 race somewhere. And there is a video of O'Sullivan's WR 2000m too.
@@thegreatalyssa mmmmmmmm nine years after this and STILL the ever green Yvonne Murray finished 2nd to Sonia o, Sullivan 💥💥💥🌟💥 boy she hung about WHAT A FANTASTIC LEGEND YVONNE IS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Calling her a “little girl” seems a bit weird. Not so much condescending in my mind, but it just sounds weird. Usually it’s “young lady”. It made me laugh a bit. Loved watching her race.
Yes I agree in the long term it may be a good thing if you are fortunate enough to have nice clean surfaces to run on but the advantage of spikes on a track of any composition is obvious or am I missing something? I think Zola or anyone else running barefoot must lose at least one second per lap. I don't think any 100 m. sprinters would like to start without blocks.
❤❤❤ Zola would certainly have been the greatest female middle distance athlete of all time I’m sure but for the challenges of dealing with adults that took advantage of her for their own personal gain.
I grew up in the free State in South Africa it was not strange to run bear foot, we played rugby bear foot, Zola was from the free State so it was usual for us free state children, we played rugby on sand patches, ran on dirt roads with no shoes
Incredible performance of this no-shoes girl. But what a bad quality of the video images. The video resolution technology was very poor in the 80s. What?
Hi. We would like to use this footage in a short film about Zola for her alma mater, Stellenbosch University. Could you let us know where it comes from?
I’ll have a check, when ‘The Fall’ documentary was released initially, this video was withdrawn from TH-cam on copyright infringement. I’ll see if I still have the info

She did always have a gentle yet strong and independent soul.

ONE OF THE GREATEST RUNS OF ALL TIMES!!!!!!!!!!
Wow! That was a fantastic race! As well as Budd, Boxer was tenacious and Benning had a beautiful running style.

It always mystified me why people said Zola couldn't sprint at the finish - here she is outsprinting a 1,500m specialist!

Excellent! This is another reason for me to say that BAREFOOT IS THE BEST !!! All the sport shoes is hard, uncomfortable. I also run barefoot :D
She's taking her running very seriously. Love this woman

I was fascinated by her. I tried barefoot running too, it was invigorating.
Zola Budd is one leggy Olympic runner. Make me think she should do a Jean Nate After Bath Splash commercial involving Olympic women running.
@harryandsimba Harry, it was the 3,000m and the last two laps of it are on Bob's YoutTube channel (i.e. this one). I agree, it was a magnificent race.

Dibaba just split 5:28 for her last 2000m of the new "indoor" 3000m world record. This record was 5:33.
