    Ah, Ratchet and Clank! Definitely one of my favorite game series of all time! There's plenty of history before this game so to say. At this point of the story, they're pretty known heroes. Dr. Nefarious is pretty much the main antagonist for these two, he's been around for quite a while too. These games have lot of heart and are such a fun sci-fi series with wacky weapons and fun locations. The characters are great and so are the stories. While the games have quite a bit of comedy to them, they're known to have their serious moments too and it works well. A Crack in Time is my favorite game out of the series, but Rift Apart is now a close second. So happy that you guys reacted to this game, now Im hoping you might react to other Ratchet and Clank stuff in the future!

    Rift Apart is one of the best looking games ever. Certainly best graphics and art direction in 2021 in my opinion. The gameplay, plot and characters are outstanding aswell, I can't praise this game enough.

    basically Ratchet is the only Lombax left in his universe/dimension after Percival Tachyon(the last of a war-like race known as the cragmites) killed all of the Lombaxes he could find as vengeance for trapping his people in a hell dimension because they would rather not be wiped out although most of the Lombaxes managed to escape into other dimensions/universes via the dimensionator(but they are kinda scattered across the multiverse) and have even managed to rebuild as seen in "tools of destruction"(but we don't know if it went the same way in every universe/dimension they arrived in or if that specific one was a special case)
    there was also Ratchets uncle Alistar but he sacrificed himself to save all of existence at the end of "a crack in time"(even though he was the one who nearly completely destroyed it in the first place) and there was that one chick from the 2nd game but she was killed off-screen by Percival
    also unrelated note in "a crack in time" early on Alistar says something along the lines of "the universe has a twisted sense of humor" and during the ending narration Clanks creator says something along the lines "the universe has a wonderful sense of humor you just need to know how to take a joke" which was one of the best parts of that game in my opinion
    also Ratchet is canonically in his 30s he started being a hero 19 years before "rift apart" takes place(he was somewhere between 13 and 17 at the time) and he has been retired for 8 years and by that point Nefarious has been retired for 10 years... what made him come out of retirement you ask? it could be that fighting Ratchet and Clank was the only thing that got him out of bed in the morning it could also be that he got upset he wasn't invited to be in the parade that was being thrown to celebrate the 19th anniversary of Ratchet and Clank becoming heroes(he seems like the kind of person who would get upset over something like that) it could also be that he was just bored the only person who truly knows is Nefarious

    I actually just got the platinum trophy for this game not too long ago. Normally I'm not too big on Insomniac games, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Only real downside is there's no real reason to go through a NG+ for all the extra upgrades when you get the platinum your first playthrough unless you're an absolute completionist or just really enjoy the game that much. But that's just me.

    Maaaan, I tried this game out on a whim because there weren't a ton of really good next-gen games for the PS5 yet and the series has always been one I'd heard about with glowing reviews...and holy crap did it become one of my favorite games PERIOD. It's STILL one of the smoothest and best-looking games on the PS5, every frame is just stunning. On top of the graphics, it's just a crazy hectic good time. Great sense of humor, tons of over-the-top "blow up everything in increasing creative and whimsical ways" action, and just so much style and personality.
    Not a lot of other games really showed off everything the hardware on the PS5 is capable of to the degree that Rift Apart does, even now I don't think much else compares (even though there are some GREAT games available now and some of them, like Horizon: Forbidden West, are just outstandingly gorgeous themselves). The game is just fluid, smooth, and seamless as it brings you a great blend of action, humor, and narrative. One of my few 10/10s I think, I can't remember anything that really took away from this game for me. There was one bug I encountered that halted some progress late game, but I did a save rollback and fixed it promptly and the only penalty was [omg so sad] I had to replay a section of the game.
    Between this and Spider-Man...Insomniac Games has seriously won me over as a fan. I'm super excited to get my hands on Spider-Man 2 and the Wolverine game they're working on, not to mention whatever they may end up doing with the Ratchet and Clank series from here on out. Good stuff, cream of the crop! :D

      I suspect there's more like you who besides hearing about the series at some point and knowing the developer behind them didn't play any of the games before and decided to give the new game a shot for their own reasons. RA pretty much does its job flawlessly in that regard; catering to already established fans (like me) while being welcoming to new players.
      It's currently pretty much a pain to play any of the older titles outside of PS Now although on a pure gameplay and mechanical standpoint RA is overall he best the series has to offer. However games like Deadlocked and A crack in time put enough spin on the formula and are still worth playing along with PS2 trilogy just to see how the series improved itself during the 2002-2004 period.
      Entries like Tools of destruction, quest for booty and Into the Nexus are worth playing through at least once but outside of some surface level elements they'll feel like a downgrade in some important areas compared to the other games I mentioned but they're still decent 7-7.5+ experiences.

    @SKai2609 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I absolutely loved this game, it was a nostalgia trip the entire way through and the graphics, textures, QoL, and gameplay were also great even if the game is only meant to be a showcase game - showing off the capabilities of the ps5. Out of the entire series, i gotta say “Up your Arsenal” “Crack in Time” and “Rift Apart” are my favorites, with “deadlock” and the ps4 remake of the first game also being very notable contenders. To pick just one however, its probably “Crack in time”
    You don’t really need to play any games prior to this one because the opening section does summarize the story as you get through it, but i recommend playing at least the ps4 remake game (or watching its equivalent movie, which wasnt as good imo) before playing RA if you ever decide to
    Fun fact: Jak and Daxter have Cameos in Rift Apart and several other R & C games. Also the original title for “Crack in Time” was going to be “Clock Blockers”

  • @Acecdawg
    @Acecdawg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you guys were to play ratchet and clank I would recommend watching all the cutscenes of all the older games leading up to whichever one you’d start playing. They remade the first game for the ps4 but like I said it was a REMAKE. So they kind of changed quite of bit story wise and took out some of the best original characters and cutscenes. So that’s why I’d definitely recommend putting up with the ps2 graphics to fully understand why people have loved this series for over about 20 years now😅

    • @DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames
      @DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @Acecdawg
      @Acecdawg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames perfect! That would definitely be nastalgic af to say the least. Never got a ps3 or played any of the games that came out after ps2 other then the remade game of the original… granted it was still a good game in the end but didn’t have as much I magic that made the actual first game so great. Also some ratchet and clank games have been spin-offs or weird styles of gameplay or progression I believe, I remember there was a secret agent clank game where you play as clank basically as James Bond in the R&C world😂

    Ratchet & Clank, a long time series, and it has always been a great time. If you want to know the very beginning of these two you can check out their origin game, on the PS2, in this video: th-cam.com/video/bziGFeA-a9o/w-d-xo.html
    It will give you their backstory and a good introduction to the series. You don't need to watch the whole thing, although it is a great beginning, to get their story. It has always been a very colorful game, with great design, and writing.

    And fun fact, Ratchet is voiced by James Arnold Taylor, the man behind Obi-Wan in The Clone Wars, Fallen Order, and other Star Wars media

    Sony has shot themselves in the face by not letting this one breathe on other platforms. The game is absolutely timeless and pretty much a license to print money. The series is pretty much 10/10 except for a couple missteps to follow trends of the day, but they've always gotten back on track and the series is one of the best.
    You guys might wanna check the intro videos for the games themselves, they're pretty good at laying out the universe.

    "Family friendly" is not synonymous with "generic"... At least, it doesn't have to be:
    I always try and moderate myself, or at least stay self-aware, whenever I find that I'm judging something unfairly due to personal bias, but I find that whenever I talk about... certain things... things like; Ratchet & Clank - my rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia are firmly in place, so make of that what you will.
    With that said, I do find it rather bittersweet that this beloved series of mine should return to the spotlight in such a desecrated manner. While obviously nowhere near as poorly handled as the likes of Disney's "star wars" (if you can even call it that), the Ratchet & Clank reboot comes across as a cardboard-cutout, (mostly) soulless imitation of its predecessors, rather than an improvement, or a new interpretation.
    Although mechanically competent (thankfully), the little touches of humor and soul seem to have been lost to the past - much like the star wars movies of old... and by that, I don't mean the *unintentionally hilarious* , satire-esque, "old-new" episodes 1 through 3 (although in all fairness, those are still good movies in my opinion; its just a matter of perspective). The "old-old" ones (4 through 6) have this "movie magic" that you almost never see, where you can't even decide if its good or bad because you were too busy *actually watching and enjoying the movie* . If it transports you into a different world and holds you hostage there for the duration of the movie (or game), it transcends criticism in my book, for all its faults.
    The movie "Avatar" might have a fairly simple, classic story, with all its clichés and the high degree of predictability that often comes with it, but I would argue that none of that matters if you are completely immersed in the experience. *The degree to which you know, in the back of your mind, that the characters with the most screen-time will come out on top doesn't matter if you are sufficiently immersed in the story itself* - it simply does not cross your mind for the duration of the experience. I would say that these moments - these moments of utter immersion - are probably the closest you will get, as an adult, to feeling like a kid again. I mean, think about it: The reason you find every experience so intense as a kid is precisely because you are one, and thus have yet to experience... well, mostly anything at all, really. Therefore, it is conceivable; reasonable, to assume that you would feel the same way if you are sufficiently captivated and immersed, given that your rational, predominantly experience-based mind would be pretty much "out the door".
    I used to play ratchet and clank on my Playstation as a kid, and have many fond memories of doing so, but as I grew older, I would occasionally return to them and find that they had a LOT more to offer than I had originally thought - in particular to adults (or near-adults, as it were)... They're kinda like "Pixar", "Dreamworks", or (sometimes...) "Disney" movies - the games, that is: *They age well, and they age WITH you* . I don't know about you, but I sure wouldn't mind re-watching "finding nemo", "ice age", "madagascar", or "shrek" - as an adult.
    All the more unfortunate then, that these elements - these little details; innuendo's, multi-faceted jokes and clever dialogue - seem to have been watered down a lot in the reboot series; likely in an attempt to homogenize the IP for a new audience. The antagonists of the reboot are written as one-dimensional and uninspired "villains", and their actions are poorly motivated. Likewise, the protagonists are idealized and their imperfections and negative personality traits erased. Yes, the magic of the originals seem to have been lost - which is to be expected, I suppose, since the developers *of the originals* are likely old and prickly pensioneere's at this point. Although, if I recall correctly, there were some "jokes" in the old titles that might've gotten some negative attention - particularly in today's political climate. Especially those concerning preconceptions about gender... Still, it's an unfortunate reality that "family-friendly" media which is equally enjoyable for the ENTIRE family, is a rare breed indeed.
    Along with Halo, Ratchet and Clank is a series that I'm always excited about returning to, whether its in the form of nostalgia, or one of these newer generations of games. Though the gameplay itself of ratchet & clank still manages to stay fresh in spite of its age (and despite having played it a million times) especially throughout the later titles (but still pre ps3-era) where studio insomniac get more and more willing to experiment with different mechanics and innovative level design, I do wish that the original games would be *officially* released for PC.
    Not as a "remake", or a "remaster", but just a simple 1:1 port of each and every game, with support for some basic things, like a scale-able HUD supporting the most common aspect ratios and resolutions, along with some basic graphic settings that can be injected OUTSIDE of the game engine, for simplicity. Unfortunately though, I don't see this happening very soon, considering that the Playstation consoles 1 through 3 are not even operating under the x86 instruction set.
