Paul Wertico was the PMG drummer I grew up and bonded with the most, his playing was such a huge part of the band's music for most of their history plus it helped shape the iconic sound that we would all come to know. He brought such a relaxed feel and made everything sound fantastic. My dad was a bit sad when Wertico left PMG as I remembered him telling me that he saw his first PMG UK appearance and was always used to seeing him on the stage, so it felt weird not having him there and it goes without say that Wertico's contributions to PMG are legendary, he was definitely one of the best drummers Pat Metheny ever played with.

Danny, Paul & Antonio are all great drummers in their own right, each with their own unique approach. But if I could go back in time, it would be when Paul was in the PMG with either Pedro or David & Mark doing those beautiful vocals.

Pat Metheny participated too in our discussion ... great time and musically instructive too!

This was nice. I saw Paul play with PMG live twice in the 90s. Once was in St. Louis for the Secret Story tour, and the other was at the Kansas City (Pat's hometown) Jazz Festival, where I also saw Bela Fleck. Paul was fantastic, as was everybody else in the group. I'm sure you've listened to 5-5-7 from the Still Life Talking album? I consider it a true masterpiece, and his drum/cymbal work on it still blow my mind. Also Steve Rodby's bass work on that song is incredible too. Mucha suerte to you. :)

This is fantastic! Wertico is underrated and has a unique voice. He was an integral part of the PMG sound and created that typical Metheny Group flow with a lot of emphasis on the ride cymbal, instead of the kick and snare. One thing I would love to know: why did he leave the group in 2001? Also, there are hardly any videos online (if any at all) where Paul explains what he is playing exactly in some of those famous PMG songs. That would be great to see and understand that specific approach: how did he build up his parts, how did he come up with those ride patterns and what was his approach to comping (with snare and bass) underneath those ride patterns? Would be so cool if he made some videos available for other drummers to dissect all those things.
Thanks for what you're doing! I subscribed your channel, of course. I see you had another hero (Bob Moses) up here recently. Great!

Love Wertico's drumming (cymbaling?!) with PMG.... A little note tho, when he says about the Sibelius monument etc etc I think he's mentioning Oslo but maybe he's mixing up with another gig in Helsinki? :) That's where the Sibelius monument is for sure. And where there is, still, not much criminality too, in Finland just like in Norway :D

    Just a passing thought…
Reckoning back to the Hendrix cover Pat did of 3rd Stone From the Sun: What if Paul, Pat and perhaps Marcus Miller did an album honoring the very best work of Jaco?
My fear is that younger musicians today are forgetting the compositional genius that Jaco gifted all of us. An album like that would go a long way in keeping that lineage moving forward in the realm of Jazz History.

The PMG/ w/o Wertico just wasn't the same.
That group's core, PM LM SR & PW's "sound" was a mosaic of beautiful colors, bright vibrant & immaculate. Certainly, the band leader the right to alter the palette, but everything after not quite the same, at least for me; still remarkably talented but somehow not quite as so. Oh well ...
