      You are so right about everything you wrote. I do hope Lyle is missed by millions. Maybe this comes with age but when folks you know and don’t know, when they die, it’s like it leaves an open hole in life. Lyle was one of those people his passing left an empty hole that can’t be filled!

    It never fails to amaze me that kids my age can't stand this kind of music... this the kind that takes years of musical training on top of a fondness for all forms of music... the result is beautiful, truly beautiful.
    I'm 17 by the way.

    • @TheSteeltigerx86
      @TheSteeltigerx86 10 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      If kids your age were all like you and like you know to appreciate this kind of music that I call: voices of the soul. then we would hope for a better future for generations to come. The youth of today do not know what the tranquility, serenity, dreaming, see beyond the imagination, to appreciate beauty, art, technique. I'm too busy to get distracted with the crap technology. To get high with alcohol and drugs and go to the disco to go stupid. They are all sources of pleasure unlike that music is the drug most healthy and beneficial for the heart and the mind. But you have to know how to appreciate in all its forms. The "jingle" trade love to listen to the young people of our times, are nothing more than a limitation of the full range repetitive melodic and creative real music. Jazz is one of the greatest musical expressions in terms of freedom of inspiration and creation. If you do not know the language of music is difficult to understand the value and understand the intention.

    • @brianmi40
      @brianmi40 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You're way ahead of your peers then. Music has become easy for anyone to create - the DIY tools for creating "beats" and the droning of the typical rhythm behind a rap song belies how empty these art forms are. You're in rarified air if you can truly appreciate what years of devotion, deep study and generational inspiration produce in a new art form like Pat's. Now carry that thinking over to every thing else in your life and you can truly make a difference on the big blue marble we call home...

      Because when you're young, if you don't conform, then you get outcast, and kids are afraid of that because popularity is important to most of them. Don't worry, individuality becomes way more important the older you get.

      So well said! I've been following him and those who've performed with him since 1979, and when I heard an interview with him for the first time in 1982, I was smitten! His music has braught me from the brink so many times, and it's like a true and trusted friend that never judges me. Instead, it somehow, by the grace of God, finds me wherever I am, holds me and allows me to find myself, especially when I feel the world's gone completely mad! He even inspired me to keep my love of music alive by doing what I love to do, so I sing. It's my lifeline, but when I need an I. V., it's there! I especially love "Across the Sky". That one got me through Boxing day, 2004, and I just knew something horrible had happened to this planet, but I didn't know what it was until my mother turned on the news that Christmas evening. They confirmed what I'd felt! Needless to say, I wasn't crazy, but I'd felt the earth vibrate and move several inches. At one point, it felt as if I was standing on the edge of a huge precipice and was about to be knocked off and tumble into oblivian. I will never forget that terrifying feeling, and I hope I never experience it again.

    Are you going with me was my favorite song by Pat. Then one day I was driving on the turnpike at around dusk with a beautiful sunset before me and this song was playing on watercolors. • @kenhoward3512
      @kenhoward3512 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow. I guarantee Pat Metheny or the other players would have some *choice* words if they heard someone suggest this song's creation was merely "simple." Creativity - at this level - is not simple. We can be certain they put a lot of effort into building this song: Metheny is obsessed with detail, as was Lyle Mays, with his multiple keyboard/synth choices.

    A música do Pat Metheny, a solo ou com o seu Group tem-me acompanhado ao longo dos últimos 40 anos, quer através dos seus discos quer dos shows que tive o privilégio de assistir. A sua música e o seu virtuosismo são brilhantes e proporcionam momentos de rara beleza, prazer e emoção. A sua música é uma parte marcante da nossa vida, a ponto de os meus filhos, quando eram pequenos, ao escutarem o som do Pat no carro já diziam: É a música das férias, porque era o soundtrack das nossas viagens em família. Love Metheny's guitar harmonics, it gives a lovely timbre that contrasts really well with the guitar-synth solo later in the piece. And what a solo it is! The pop-rock feel is great and the apparent simplicity disguises the absorbing and erudite compositional approaches. Lyle May's contribution is fantastic and the two guys on vocals and rhythm guitars are excellent! The bass and drums underpin the other musicians beautifully and enable the expressivity of Metheny and May's soloing. Imaginary Day is a great album with some wide-ranging influences....

    Pat Metheny my favorite guitarist, has incredible phrasing, perhaps because he first started playing trumpet. The synclavier sounds almost like a flugelhorn.

    • @drummerflex
      @drummerflex 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you meant the Roland? He doesn't play the Synclavier on this song. However, on Yolanda You Learn and Praise on the First Circle album, he uses a trumpet sound the Synclavier for his solos.

      Yes, he first used the Echoplex with a tape loop device back in the 1970s at Berklee. Later he began using the Roland Guitar Synth, and now the Synclavier which he helped to design...a genius of the guitar.

    • @rbus
      @rbus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very unlikely that's a Synclavier, they are very big and bulky things that while awesome in a studio, pretty much obsoleted by modern tech even in 2001 - especially if just using for solo tones. That's more likely a Roland GR-500 because they pretty much make that kind of synth trumpet sound and not much elses. I have one of these, fun to noodle around with but haven't figured out how to make it not that sound.

    I've played this live (in the Ledford role). It's almost impossible to describe what it feels like in that big bridge where the whole thing comes to a climax. But that feeling comes back and is remembered every time I hear this song. So much fun.

    I'm so glad I took a semester of Music Appreciation when I was in high school in 1971. I learned all about the music composed by the great masters like Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, etc. I doubt that I would have ever learned to appreciate instrumental music without taking that class. It's not that I don't like music with lyrics. I grew up during the 60s and 70s golden age of rock and roll and still enjoy it. But there's something so pure about listening to music without lyrics. And there's so many kinds of instrumental music to be explored if a person just opens their mind to it. I doubt that classes like that exist in high school these days. Most American schools aren't teaching the arts due to budget constraints.
