You are so right about everything you wrote. I do hope Lyle is missed by millions. Maybe this comes with age but when folks you know and don’t know, when they die, it’s like it leaves an open hole in life. Lyle was one of those people his passing left an empty hole that can’t be filled!
Been listening to these guys for 40+ years.. the novelty, the energy, the electric emotion that comes from listening to this fabulous group never fades... it was great then, & in 2023, is still marvelous..
... I've seen Pat Metheny play for the first time in 1975 in Utrecht (Holland) when he was a member of the fabulous Gary Burton band; PMG didn't even exist yet (lol) ... great music memories of the 70's ...
Can’t imagine my life without the music of Metheny/Mays and all the other amazing musicians that went along this wonderful journey. Lyle, you are so much missed… Laters… Heaven must have this music or it would not be Heaven. ❤️🌟
So well said! I've been following him and those who've performed with him since 1979, and when I heard an interview with him for the first time in 1982, I was smitten! His music has braught me from the brink so many times, and it's like a true and trusted friend that never judges me. Instead, it somehow, by the grace of God, finds me wherever I am, holds me and allows me to find myself, especially when I feel the world's gone completely mad! He even inspired me to keep my love of music alive by doing what I love to do, so I sing. It's my lifeline, but when I need an I. V., it's there! I especially love "Across the Sky". That one got me through Boxing day, 2004, and I just knew something horrible had happened to this planet, but I didn't know what it was until my mother turned on the news that Christmas evening. They confirmed what I'd felt! Needless to say, I wasn't crazy, but I'd felt the earth vibrate and move several inches. At one point, it felt as if I was standing on the edge of a huge precipice and was about to be knocked off and tumble into oblivian. I will never forget that terrifying feeling, and I hope I never experience it again.
Right behind you - I was 19. Walking into my Univ of Mich dorm spring of ‘77, heard it through an open window on the 3rd floor, and -still outside - demanded the name of the artist and album. The white Pat Metheny Group Album. Nabbed it in Ann Arbor the next day. Huge fan, favorite artist, ever since.
Lyle Mays- best keyboard player ever. Had the privilege to see these guys several times and will be forever grateful to have been in the presence of such genius.
Are you going with me was my favorite song by Pat. Then one day I was driving on the turnpike at around dusk with a beautiful sunset before me and this song was playing on watercolors. It was a picture perfect setting that we sometimes get blessed with. The bad part the song ended. A beautiful piece of music!
"...the song ended." Interesting: When Pat Metheny, being interviewed, was asked how he feels about his earlier music, compared to his more-current choices, he replied, "Well, it's all been just one long song."
You're right. I'm never tired of listening to Pat Metheny, and this is not something happening very often with other musicians, even with some of the greatest ones
It never fails to amaze me that kids my age can't stand this kind of music... this the kind that takes years of musical training on top of a fondness for all forms of music... the result is beautiful, truly beautiful. I'm 17 by the way.
If kids your age were all like you and like you know to appreciate this kind of music that I call: voices of the soul. then we would hope for a better future for generations to come. The youth of today do not know what the tranquility, serenity, dreaming, see beyond the imagination, to appreciate beauty, art, technique. I'm too busy to get distracted with the crap technology. To get high with alcohol and drugs and go to the disco to go stupid. They are all sources of pleasure unlike that music is the drug most healthy and beneficial for the heart and the mind. But you have to know how to appreciate in all its forms. The "jingle" trade love to listen to the young people of our times, are nothing more than a limitation of the full range repetitive melodic and creative real music. Jazz is one of the greatest musical expressions in terms of freedom of inspiration and creation. If you do not know the language of music is difficult to understand the value and understand the intention.
You're way ahead of your peers then. Music has become easy for anyone to create - the DIY tools for creating "beats" and the droning of the typical rhythm behind a rap song belies how empty these art forms are. You're in rarified air if you can truly appreciate what years of devotion, deep study and generational inspiration produce in a new art form like Pat's. Now carry that thinking over to every thing else in your life and you can truly make a difference on the big blue marble we call home...
Because when you're young, if you don't conform, then you get outcast, and kids are afraid of that because popularity is important to most of them. Don't worry, individuality becomes way more important the older you get.
Ya i agree this wonderfull music is under appreciated but its always awesome talents those guys have. I love the drummer i hope my drumming will be as good as his is n im 18 & in my Hi skool Jazz band.

Lyle Lays realmente un extraordinario pianista, como acompaña todo el tema, especialmente las partes mas sutiles, es maravilloso escuchar esta pieza musical. Una obra maestra de estos tiempos.
I woke up today in Mar 2022 with this melody ringing in my head, took me a while to remember it was a Pat Metheny’s piece. Just found it and I can’t stop listening to it
On one hand everything seems so simple yet so likeable and rich with small details... On the other hand those little things make Metheny's music so powerful and so soothing at the same time. Listening to this one can simply not be in the bad mood. It's so uplifting and joyful.
Every so often I go back to this song and always I find western, Africa, space, rhythm, emotion, communication, technique, feeling, groove, melody, harmony, colors, life.
I want to know why only a couple of audience folks are seen to be moved by the music! This music is absolutely divine. This music floats in the heavens and moves the soul! I also, have followed Pat and Lyle for 40 years.
Some people feel music in their bodies and it gets expressed as moving or dancing. Gyrating is a bit of an overstatement. Maybe their feet are, unseen, moving!!!@@RobertVeasquez
Wow. I guarantee Pat Metheny or the other players would have some *choice* words if they heard someone suggest this song's creation was merely "simple." Creativity - at this level - is not simple. We can be certain they put a lot of effort into building this song: Metheny is obsessed with detail, as was Lyle Mays, with his multiple keyboard/synth choices.
I'm so glad I took a semester of Music Appreciation when I was in high school in 1971. I learned all about the music composed by the great masters like Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, etc. I doubt that I would have ever learned to appreciate instrumental music without taking that class. It's not that I don't like music with lyrics. I grew up during the 60s and 70s golden age of rock and roll and still enjoy it. But there's something so pure about listening to music without lyrics. And there's so many kinds of instrumental music to be explored if a person just opens their mind to it. I doubt that classes like that exist in high school these days. Most American schools aren't teaching the arts due to budget constraints.
To me, this song has such a hopeful vibe, it makes me feel he's saying, yes things have been crappy but don't worry, it's all good, we're all going to be fine.
My mother was dying of cancer when this record, "Imaginary Day," was released, and I listened to it - start to finish - daily for weeks, after visiting her in the hospital. I still have the same appreciation and gratitude for this music.

The pop-rock feel is great and the apparent simplicity disguises the absorbing and erudite compositional approaches. Musical performance doesn’t get much better than this!

Now all i basically listen too is pat. Im a drummer in a band that plays rock but ......Pat rarely travels to the west coast of USA 🇺🇸 not much anymore. I did see Pat the last ✌ two shows and I failed to see Lyle Mays in person 😔. Im a fuckin dork for that one. they come back to PTown Oregon baby yeah !!! One more time 😌 please. 😊.
A masterpiece onstage, wonderful to watch and listen to such a tight group of musicians. That bassist is So in the pocket.
I so love the bass part with the bow, such a great sound.
Beautiful composition
