Great talk, ty both
When you think of iconic drummers, Simon Phillips is definitely in that conversation as far as true legends of the drum kits. He has done it all and played with everyone, from ToTo to Judas Priest to Hiromi Trio Project to Derek Sherinian to The Who to Jeff Beck, he is a powerful drummer and has been a huge part of some incredible albums. His work with his band Protocol for me is some of the best stuff he has ever done as a solo artist / bandleader and the musicians he has assembled for his projects are all tremendous players. He is an amazing composer and has made some of the finest music ever. A fantastic interview with one of the greatest drummers on the planet
Very few ambidextrous drummers such as SP. Surprised he never put his hat in the centre, like Bill Bruford. The standout reference for me was Dave Carpenter; he could play keyboard parts on his 6 string 😮 There is something very wrong with how the arts is sponsored; no orchestra ever made a profit & yet many independent musicians can not afford to gig or even get recordings out. SP is a credit to drumming & the arts in general. Thank you both for this very enjoyable talk ✌️😎👍
I definitely do not agree with what Simon says here about composition, although I respect him and love his playing and always have. Firstly, compositions materialize in many different ways, so one should be open to whatever order the musical elements of melody, harmony, and rhythm present themselves. Secondly, although I understand the point he is making about writing the melody after having the chords in place, I don't agree because a good composer should still be able to write a beautiful melody over whatever chords they are hearing. Also, if the chords do come first, they may be very rich and beautiful harmonies that form wonderful harmonic relationships. If the harmonies come to you in a very natural and organic way, that'a gift! Just as a beautiful melody that comes to you is a gift. Simply put, it's not that cut and dry, that you "should" have a melody first and harmonies come later. Composition is wonderful, too mysterious, and infinite to put it down to an overly specific order of events in terms of musical elements.
Opinions are great but rules have no place in art
How a about a Simon Phillips and Dr. Jazz album . Simon doing some Out Improv would be interesting .
Thank you, Mr. Salamon for this considerate interview. You have the gift of letting Simon (and many others} finish their thoughts.
Cool! Thank you! Simon is amazing!
Lovely chat, thanks. Caught Lund with Melissa Aldana at the Village Vanguard while in NYC last week. Outstanding! Keep up the good work Samo!

Bill Dobbins is a genius! The creative approach to jazz harmony book changed my life!
Found a book of all the Monk tunes transcribed by Bill Dobbins online recently.. he has some interesting ideas for notating some of the rhythms and it’s all grand staff so you can see a lot of voicings close up. Was unaware of what a lot of other work he’s done! Thanks again, great channel man!
The grand stave is easier & I think helps with orchestral thinking/ writing/ playing.

Wow...great, great interview.
when i ask people what music they like and they say 'a bit of everything really' I make them listen to this
That's the only Pat Metheny album I liked. When he got " big " his music with Lyle Mays all sounded the same. Musak, yuppie music or as Frank Zappa said... " Du jour ". This album Metheny's first is timeless.

500 WoW & many thanks man. Keep it up.
Man, I love these interviews; your channel is criminally under-subscribed. Have you ever done or considered doing new interviews with people whom you have previously interviewed? Joe Morris kept coming up in this interview. I know that you interviewed him a few years ago, but he is a player with so much depth that he seems like a good candidate for a repeat interview. On the other hand, maybe there are so many players yet to interview (like Stanton Davis) that there is no time for repeats....
@@d-absurdum yeah, good thought...could be interesting, but yessss, so many great musicians out there.
Dave a beautiful human being

He‘s right. Pursuance with Kenny Garrett and Wish are really important, somehow overlooked recordings of Pat. The comping. And that Solo on equinox. Damn. And a great band sound.
Terrible Animals is a bit like the Beatles Magical Mistery Tour Album after the Band took the US audience in storm prior - with much more Straight ahead stuff. Wonderful Album.
@@jojena_imm Those two are some of my favorite of Pat, probably the only recordings you can hear Pat playing as a sole chordal instrument in a band (besides trio and the unity band). The various ways of his comping, e.g., single note line, rhythmic comping like a horn section, and strumming with dynamic changing, are just brilliant.
