    my cousin Jerry knew Jaco from Northeast High School in Oakland Park, Florida.
    They played in a band together and Jaco was the drummer.

    Back in 1988....shortly after Jaco passed....I had dinner with Rik Emmett.
    For a good part of the evening Rik said what a huge fan he was of Jaco and his admiration for him was shared to all at the table.

    I moved to Phoenix in 87 to go to grad school, wow what I missed. I've met Brian a few times at NAMM, and met Jaco in 83 when I was living in Murray Hill Manhattan. As a bass player, I can't imagine jamming with Jaco. Jacos song "Chromatic Fantasy" made me buy my first fretless. I was a hard rock guy with a secret love for Jazz and Fusion. Jaco and Stanley Clarke were my Geddy and Chris Squire of Jazz. Thanks so much for the Brian Bromberg interviews.....really great for us low enders!!!

      Chromatic Fantasy is actually a Bach piece and he played fretted on the cover, but he does add more to the piece though

    I heard Brian play with Bob Ravenscroft (who had been my teacher) and Peter Magadini in the early 80s, at the Adams Hotel in Downtown Phoenix several times. I thought of him as the Jaco of the acoustic bass. Prior to that time, I'd never heard nor imagined that kind of virtuosity, and intonation could be achieved on the Acoustic Bass. He spent a bit of time after one of the sets explaining some of his techniques to me. His playing sounds very sweet and sublime and is hard to reproduce on a recording. There are elements of it live, without amplification that are lost on any kind of recording that I've heard.

    very cool. Brian used to play with the boys at a small club called the Studio Cafe in Newport beach. What a line up looking back. I was so spoiled and didn't even realize it. Tracy Longstreth, David Garland and amazing drop ins.

    Everyone seems to have their favorite players, the late legendary Victor Bailey once said the composition School Days (Stanley Clarke) was the most important bass solo and bass album by the the most important bassist of our times. These Jaco stories are great, but it's like there wasn't anyone else at that high level doing anything on bass. I'm not a bassist, but a bass listener for 50 years and I remember Stanley ruling the electric bass world three or four years before Jaco became known publicly. In death and with talent as the case of Jaco I understand you take on an almost immortal god like status, but sometimes I believe it's gone a little to far. I support what Victor Bailey said taking nothing away from Jaco.

    Sadly he doesn't mention the maker of his custom bass that Jaco played..it was most likely made by Bob Mick out of Tucson..

  • @PatriotSteve

    According to him this story took place in 1986 and then he says he hung out with him several times over the years. We all know Jaco was mostly out of commission at this point and gone in ‘87. The story doesn’t add up.

    Love Brian. But I feel he is stretching his Jaco Story to unseen heights. If jaco ever appeared on stage with a strange bass, there would a bootleg out there somewhere of him playing it. Jaco and Jimi Hendrix have, bar none, the most bootlegs of them just talking to people and playing around before and after performances.

    • @PatriotSteve
      @PatriotSteve ปีที่แล้ว

      he says this was in ‘86 and then he hung with him several times over the years. Impossible seeing as Jaco was gone a year later.
