    I'm continuing my month-long Super Cub commute series, and I'm taking a much longer commute today than my normal routes would require. I didn't start with a full tank, so that means that I estimated my total fuel costs based on the stats from the fill-up this afternoon. My return commute was probably more efficient because I wasn't riding as fast going home.

    I totally agree with you and seriously amazed in how people actively use their cellphone while driving. I guess it's a worldwide issue and bogs down to their attitude towards road safety and concern for other road users. They turn into some Zombie as I guess. Addiction to cellphone while driving or riding is a punishable offence which demands higher penalties and requires longer duration of prison time

    I'm autistic, thus condemend to a life of poverty. Not had a car since 2004. Plan to get a minimoto or scooter next year. I bought a helmet cam, have a 17" tire, found a small shitty tent-these are the first steps to taking up riding and camping next year. Last year I worked 360 days, this year I have had almost every weekend off-so many opportunities for weekend getaways not taken.

    Hah! I use the same tail bag on my Sportster. Super useful. I do miss using my Saddlemen Explorer seat, which wouldn't work with the tunnel bag, as it has better lower back support than my Mustang solo seat that necessitated getting the tunnel bag to act as back support.

    3:20 I don't even use my phone while walking somewhere. I can't trust that I won't walk into a wall or something. I don't understand how people think they can properly pilot a vehicle while doing so. I have heard excuses like "I am a good multi-tasker" in the past but what makes that particularly terrifying is knowing that the human brain is actually completely incapable of multi-tasking. We can only serial task.

    Jealous. Here in Indiana we just went from a 75 degree day to 20s and 30s. For the foreseeable future so I had to put all my bikes up for the winter. Now I’m driving my truck that gets ~10mpg.

    A fellow super cub user. As for phone use whilst driving, I think a lot of people have never had a bad whoopsie using their phone. Be that hitting another car or killing a pedestrian. Therefore it only carries the penalty of a slapped wrist and a fine.

    When I rebuilt my 1964 C102 super cub and added the 125cc electric+kick start 4 speed, I used an AC cdi harness ignition system. The DC battery system is seperate from AC ignition system.
    The AC cdi system, makes starting by kick or push, unaffected by the condition of the DC system (dead battery).
    The electric starter has no effect on ignition system, while cranking and always gives strong spark.
    I upgraded to a group 9 size battery and added a 120v 400 watt inverter for camping.
    If I used the inverter alot the night before, starter may or may not start the engine; I usually don't even try the the starter; I kick start to try and extend the battery life.
    The engines small charging system does a good job of recharging, while I ride for the day to camp again.
    LED lights help charging system keep up; would like to try a Lithium battery.

    hi QM,,,, i follow you on your different trips on the honda cub . I also bought one in the spring of this year, I like to share my first impressions. At first I think it's a great machine, light to steer and handy for short journeys. Unfortunately there are also more than one shortcoming, the first thing I changed is the heel shift lever. I sawed it through and extended it by 3 cm, and then bent it closer to the center of the cub. Now my size 45 foot is finally in place without constantly resting on the shift lever. Second, I find the fact that I keep sliding forward on the saddle, especially when braking, is very annoying. That's why I raised the saddle by 27mm on the hinge side. That makes a huge difference to me. Third, Furthermore, the bad suspension bothers so much that I put my tires softer than sensible. At the first tire change I will opt to mount a tire that is as balloon as possible. I also look around to see if there is anything to do with the suspension, because comfortable is something else. But on good roads....nice,great motorcycle. Even going to refuel is fun

    on a 5 speed Grom on gentle ride in city ( Toronto ) I get about 160 miles/gal US , on faster city roads with faster traffic ( about 45-55mph ) it gets about 100-120 ( a lot depends on wind direction ) .... I did run tank try .. to see if the on board computer is correct ... it seems to be within 5% ( distance seems to be under 3% error )

      I did an intake, exhaust, and tune, and my grom started getting around 170-180 mpg. I cammed it with a new tune and it dropped to about 140. I really hate the cam. Next spring, I am pulling it out and returning.

      Howdy, Paul, and congrats on your new Super Cub! I am drawing power from the back of the ignition switch, but that's not an easy task. I removed the leg shield to replace it because of some minor road rash, so that was opportune timing to tap the ignition wiring.       The easier option is to purchase one of the Kitaco power connectors: japan.webike.net/ps/#!p.m=14059&p.c=1647&p.sk=1 . That gives you a switched 12V source for a direct connection to your GPS or USB chargers. I did the same to my Cub, but I created a separate 10A branch circuit that draws directly from the battery and is switched by a 12V relay (the Kitaco adapter power relay's coil). That lets me power multiple devices (e.g., driving lights, dual USB charger, and GPS) without worrying about overloading the factory 10A fuse. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I have already installed a new type of USB port that replaces that triangular piece in the center above the leg shield. It's drawing power from the headlight with a dedicated coupler. Now, I'd like to add other gadgets (Garmin perhaps), and dedicated charging points for my iPad Pro (in side bag - USB C) and USB power bank for emergency jump starts. I thought about just leaving it in the side tool box or in one of my side bags with minimal visibility of the wires dangling around. Then comes the question - "will this drain the battery faster or blow fuses?" The end goal is to make a mobile office. Also inspired by your Digital Nomad video. lol.

      Howdy, Andrew, and thanks for the feedback! I typically don't do much "planning" for my routes other than trying to avoid busy traffic centers and faster highways. I typically use my Garmin Zumo GPS, Google Maps, and Waze for real-time routing. I enable the options to avoid highways, toll roads, and off-road sections. Those options usually keep me out of trouble and off of the fast highways, but there are always excptions.
      Sometimes, there is no other route through certain areas except the fast highways. In those cases, I just stay to the right lane and yield to faster traffic on the shoulder when absolutely necessary. I keep a close eye on my mirrors to increase my chances of evading careless cagers, particularly while stopped in traffic. Quickly scooting to the shoulder or between other cars has saved my bacon dozens of times when oblivious cagers failed to notice me BEHIND the car that they were focused on just ahead of me.     Honda's minmotos look good but they have some scooters that are so hideously ugly, I fear I could get a citation for riding one. The Super Cub is in effect, a good looking scooter.

      Congrats on racking up 5K miles on your Cub! These bikes have low-compression engines, so they don't benefit from higher octane fuels. The owners manual specifies a minimum of 86 PON (pump octane number), so our base unleaded 87-88 PON is sufficient. I've done extensive fuel economy testing with various grades of fuel and speed/load conditions over the past 15K miles. I have noticed a slight increase in efficiency with mid-grade (89) fuel, but no appreciable gains stepping up to premium (91-93) fuel. In all cases, the minor improvement was only 2-5 MPG between grades, so that doesn't justify the 15-50% increase in cost/gallon.
      Of course, that is only accounting for fuel economy alone while not considering other benefits that "premium" fuels may offer in the long term. Most manufacturers/distributors reserve the special additive packages with extra detergents and added stabilizers for their premium blends (e.g., Shell Power Premium+). Those blends will probably be cleaner over time and result in fewer engine and injector deposits. I compensate for that by running a strong concentration of Seafoam or Chevron Techron for 1-2 consecutive tanks every 1500 miles or so. My bottles of fuel system cleaner cost $8-12, and they last for 5-6 tanks of fuel. So that approach is about 1/3 of the cost difference between premium fuel vs base unleaded.

Note that all fuel stats there are 6.25% lower than actual due to my oversize front sprocket. I still haven't added my stats for the Scooter Cannonball Run trip and other recent miles (about 11K total miles)... I need to do that at some point. I tracked my fuel economy and expenses very carefully during that trip. I ran base unleaded (86-88) about 95% of that trip, and I averaged 109.1 MPG over 9800 miles while pulling a trailer behind me!       This screen doesn't offer much wind or rain protection for the rider, but it does smooth out the aerodynamics for better fuel economy. Most of the air is pushed around my torso and leaves my shoulders and helmet in clear air, so there is no turbulence at the helmet. I tried the taller Givi windscreen on the Cub for a few hundred miles, but the fit and finish were terrible, and it created too much turbulence at my helmet.       Agreed! I think that legalized filtering would probably help the adoption of small-displacement motorcycles and scooters. However, we would also need a MAJOR re-education campaign for our cagers here to understand that it's not only LEGAL but SMART for motorcyclists to filter.
      Our cagers are very territorial and aggressive, so they try to wreck cyclists of all flavors for filtering past them. I've even had cagers chase me down miles later and try to cause altercations because I was able to pass by them while they waited. They think that we're "cutting the line"... if they must wait, then so should EVERYONE ELSE! That mentality is equivalent to thinking a bicyclist or pedestrian on the sidewalk should wait parallel to stopped traffic. I'm afraid that a paradigm shift in thinking is the only real fix.       Yep! Been there, done that many times! I usually carry a lightweight day hammock on most of my day rides and general adventures. Whenever I'm tired or need a break, then I'll pull off the road and find a couple of trees... 3 minutes flat, and I'm hanging in the breeze! 😉👍 --QM

      @@QuasiMotard You may be interested to know in Australia, legislation came in to effect from Nov 2021 requiring new bikes under 125cc to feature combined or 2-Channel ABS and bikes over 126cc to feature 2-channel ABS. Reason for singe channel? Cost. Downsides to single channel ABS "on a motorcycle" is an almost certain loss of control under crash stops. If you ride your Super Cub do NOT ever mash the front brake lever because on a dry road you will either end up over the handle bars and on the road or more likely, see the rear of the bike overtake you either side as you then fall off and land on the road. We had a LOT of injuries from these before they were banned. I rode all the models below and under extreme braking they were literally uncontrollable. Cheers!

    I’m contemplating the purchase of a Super Cub and have a couple questions. Do you have any issues with the foot positioning? I’m speaking more to the left foot where your shifting? Do you get along with the foot positioning on the left side if you ride a long distance, having a feeling that your foot has to stay in one position all the time, to be able to react to anything and everything that could happen? I will say thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

      The left foot position is unusual and that was annoying to me at first. I always had to keep my foot cocked sideways on the footpeg to avoid pressing either the toe or heel of the shift lever. I adjusted the lever position to raise the heel portion to make shifting easier and to NOT accidentally rest my foot on it (causes the clutch to slip).       The Super Cub is not a comfortable machine for long-distance rides, but I'm no stranger to suffering. I rode this Cub 10K miles around the USA over the span of only 3 weeks during the 2021 Scooter Cannonball Run: th-cam.com/play/PLLXxDh3JumLnSK37lF4AcrF28frAIfLfA.html
      Being stuck in the "toilet seat position" for 10+ hours/day is not something that I would recommend, but it's survivable. I added an AirHawk Cruiser Large seat pad to my Cub to make those long days in the saddle more comfortable. My knees and hip flexors gave me more problems than my posterior, but I adapted to it after 3-4 days on the road... numb to the pain, maybe! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    What are your thoughts on a dedicated sat nav vs Google Maps on a phone?
    If you could only have one solution, which would you choose?

      Howdy, Jake! That's a frequent question, and it really depends on the type of ride. If you could only have one device, then I would obviously vote for the smart phone option. Google Maps, Waze, and other navigation apps have access to real-time traffic data, weather, and current road closure information (not always the case with a dedicated GPS unit). That's a safe bet as long as you are somewhere near civilization and reliable cell/data signals.
      However, if my trips are more remote, then a dedicated sat nav like the Garmin Zumo is the definite winner. Dedicated GPS's don't need access to the cellular networks for position information, and the maps are built into the device. Mobile phones frequently drop out and lose routing when you aren't in range of a good data connection... even when you have downloaded "offline" maps.
      I've been let down many, many times by Google Maps and Waze during my long road trips outside of large metro areas. Some areas completely scramble my phone turn it into a brick until I get out of that coverage area ( th-cam.com/video/HvR7koIBPwk/w-d-xo.html is a perfect example). Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    I did buy a piano and 2 Yamaha keyboards and an FM modulator. I am busy on weekends but next year I want to spend at least a weekend or 2 a mo. travelling through Quebec. I love Honda's minmotos but they have some hideously ugly scooters-I could get fined for driving one.

      That's a good question! I think the newer 2022+ Honda Grom and Monkey with the upgraded engine and 5-speed transmission are marginally more efficient. I've seen many owners' reports of 155+ MPG from those bikes! 😉👍 --QM

      I haven't owned any of the Italian scoots from Aprilia, Piaggio, or Vespa, so I don't have an opinion yet. However, I've heard from other owners that the Piaggio's are very reliable scoots. The 2021+ Piaggio Liberty 150S interests me, so one of those might end up in my stable sooner or later. The fuel tanks are reportedly very finicky on those due to their shape (hard to fill completely), but they are otherwise very good machines. 😉👍 --QM

      @@QuasiMotard Yeah, I've heard you have to rock the bike back and forth in order to fill it completely. The Liberty is the one I've been considering.

      That's the Garmin Zumo 396 LMT-S: amzn.to/3TxIeTu . I've been very impressed with it over the past several years. I upgraded to the Garmin Zumo XT ( amzn.to/3Oai7Ba ) for my bigger bikes, but I still use the 396 on the Super Cub and other smaller scoots because it's a good size and works very well.
