The 2024 Honda Ridgeline Trailsport Is A More Capable Pragmatic Truck With Better Tech

  • The #HondaRidgeline may be getting a little long in the tooth, but for 2024, #Honda has given the #Ridgeline its first ever #Trailsport trim and it also gets the new 9" touch screen from the redesigned Pilot. The #RidgelineTrailsport also gets more off-road capability thanks to an off-road tuned suspension, all-terrain tires, skid plates, and a unique look on the outside.

Honda’s Ridgeline may not be the biggest, quickest, or most capable truck on the market, but for about 90% of buyers, it literally is all the truck you’ll ever need. We expect Honda to redesign it for 2026, but the updates for 2024 make it more appealing!

Great trucks! I have a small fleet of these for my home building company. We switched over to these a few years ago from GM half-ton trucks. The time and money saved with these is surprisingly high. Incredibly reliable and efficient, not to mention more comfortable in the cabin (ergonomics/visibility/fit and finish/durability) as well as ride quality. I would recommend them to anyone in the trades.

I’ll say this Ridgeline is perfect for car buyers ~~ Honda was smart when they made this car off of the Pilot platform since it’ll be easier to live with. Also that Honda 3.5L V6 is still a gem of an engine. No matter how old that engine is, it’s still a phenomenal engine that will be very reliable. And the interior may be old, but I still think this looks very easy to use and simple for the average person. Honda got it right with the interior ergonomics.

The subtle changes tot he 2024 Ridgeline (all trim levels) is SO substantial in person. No more flip down arm rests - nice large arm rest / storage compartment. The piano black plastics are gone which held finger prints like crazy and looked so cheap! The ride height is taller. I don't know how or why, I don't think I'm crazy, but in person I swear it sits a tad higher now. Also a big fan of the new gauge cluster. My only gripes or more so wishes are that they'd beef up the front brakes to a larger rotor and caliper combo and that they'd give it a larger external transmission cooler. Those are updates that I made to my gen 1 Ridgeline especially since I do some towing with it. I wish the prices of new vehicles would stop creeping up too! I would LOVE a black edition, but you're looking at 50k for one. Ouch! My gen 1 is still running strong with over 200k on it. The engines are mostly unchanged after all this time, but tuned for more power AND more mpg. I don't know how the engineers managed to improve on BOTH! And thank goodness there's no sign of them down grading to a 4cyl turbo like the newest Tacoma just did. I will take the bulletproof and punchy V6 over a turbo or hybrid any day especially for a truck!

I mean I call bullshit on the great driving characteristics and on the mileage. It's a ridgeline it's based on a pilot, we are not talking about it being great either like a miata or a Rolls-Royce.
Second my big lifted offroad truck with all terrain tires gets the same or better mileage than this so I wouldn't be trying to tout its efficiency. If I had a regular road trim the mileage would completely surpass the ridgeline by getting the highway numbers into the low 30s.

Nice review as always. I bought a 2023 RL RTL-E about 2 months ago as a replacement for a 2014 Ford F-150 King Ranch that was 'totaled'. The RL has an impressive ride - supple but composed and the truck is very quiet especially on smooth asphalt. The 2024 TS replaced the RTL-E with a similar price but you loose the 8 speaker 'premium' sound system w/in-bed audio. I did drive a 2024 RTL as well but the RTL-E seemed quieter overall. Anyway, this truck is very impressive in its ride, handling and plenty of power when you give the GO pedal a workout. For a mid-size truck this is more than adequate for many 'truck' buyers.

Strange that Honda took the 110v outlet out of the bed for this TrailSport. They only have it in the Black Edition. Considering this is their "outdoor" and "camping" model you would think they would have it. Also, strange they pulled other features like the upgraded radio out of this. It would be nice if this had all the features of the RTL-E this replaced in the lineup. Hopefully Honda realizes this mistake when they refresh this model. People want the offroad version with all the features. Either that or they need to offer 2 versions of the trailsport.

Honda's biggest issue is offering customization to their trims. Something they can't compete against with the big three of the U.S. Their business model is streamlined for U.S. buyers because it reduces their manufacturing line costs here. It lets them pay their U.S. workers "less" (compared to other countries where they manufacture) and reduces investment in the manufacturing line equipment.

I had a G1 08 for 13 years, my son drives it it now. I was so disappointed to find out that the 21 I have now is actually slightly worse when it comes to ground clearance and approach/break over and departure angles. I was hoping for slightly better, or worse case no change, I got slightly worse. It is fantastic- as my G1 was- on moderately deep snow covered or icy roads. Better than most "real" 4Wd trucks/SUVs I have owned. But, I have never had the nerve to take it off road due to the above mentioned issues, along with zero under body protection on G1 or G2. The new Trail Sport has not solved even one of those problems(though you say they added some skid plates?), so I will not be getting a new one. I was excited to see the Trailsport added, figuring it would get at least every improvement that is on the new Pilot TS. Sadly, no. No significant improvements. 7.6" of ground clearance is pathetic for any truck that goes off road in even mild conditions. So I will stick with what I have, unless I want to get a more off road worthy truck or SUV pf another brand. Maybe they will do a decent upgrade next year, we will see.

Couldn't care less about how big the center screen is, but did they fix the audio quality? I've got a 2023 RTL and the system is adequate but hobbled by software that's constantly messing with the equalizer to clip the loud parts of songs. Presumably to protect the lower quality speakers. I can deal with speakers that aren't super crisp but if my music doesn't sound anything like it's supposed to, or the volume keeps fluctuating, I'm immediately annoyed. My 2017 RTL had better sound out of the old, base radio.
I also preferred the captains chairs and older center console. It offered more storage space and nobody had to move their arm for the other person to get into it.

Great review. The Ridgeline TrailSport or Black Edition is the bench mark in the midsize segment for my needs. We tow a small camper that weighs 2900 lbs. So, the RL is just fine with its 5,000 lb tow capacity. Plus, at 1,500 plus lbs of real world payload, the RL exceeds the real world payload of many of its competitors. Plus, we value reliability and safety. The RL’s capability plus all of its innovations and features make it a strong contender for us. We plan to buy at the end of 2024.

I think most people buying this want to have a comfortable car ride vs a body on frame (read rougher) truck ride. Putting beefier tires for the sake of looking cooler will only hurt your gas mileage. Same for putting goofy wheel arches to make it look off roadie. The Taco's and Chevy/GM twins are for a younger demographic who want cool looking even though they don't take them off road. Honda recognizes who their buyers are.

I'd like to see the Trailsport have a desert running trim, and offer the "all the bells and whistles" of the Black Series on the Trailsport at least as options. Same here. Come on Honda, give us more ground clearance than than a CRV for heaven's sake, and do something about that approach angle and the departure angle ruining tail pipes and give us at least an option for the skid plates and recovery point like are on the new Pilot Trail Sport! For those of us that love out RLs EXCEPT for the pitiful off road specs, offering this Trail Sport is just a bit of a tease. What would be wonderful: give us a RL that is actually just a bit higher and with a better approach and departure angles than the already much improved Pilot Trail Sport. Let the truck be just a bit more suited for off road conditions than the SUV! I sometimes have my RL at a muddy construction site, and I bet a bunch of other owners do as well. Often there is not enough room to park on the street. That then becomes "off roading". Give us a package that matches, or better yet slightly exceeds, the Pilot TS!

As a 2nd 2017 Ridgeline owner, i hope they make the Ridgeline less of a Pilot "modified" for truck duties. Which from my actual ownership( 187K miles) they wanted the least cost way to have something in the truck segment. i.e. problematic 6 spd auto, narrow rear doors, and infotainment update + injectors, CV axles, and water intrusion issues.
9spd since 2020 seems good and proves very reliable. Engine is kinda long in the tooth the 3.5 sohc and even the new dohc.
My hope for the resigned, a hybrid or even mild hybrid, you would think from honda with their legendary generators would have integrated something. On that updade the damn 2 prong plug with 3 and update the dirty modified Sine wave ( feel bad honda).
The rear bed trunk is usefully but the spare storage is useless. Its a donut and if you get a large spare it wont fit. Relocate the spare to under the vehicle and lower the bed depth( out going is quite shallow) + make the tailgate damped ( they can figure it out )
The dream is a hybrid with beefy rear 50kw electric motors and a marriage from the crv 2.0 hybrid/rdx 2.0t in the front. Delete the propeller shaft and add a large ish 3kwh battery pack. Probably can lower the cabin floor as well. Maybe a pipe dream but the idea is to have a hybrid honda clarity truck. With the ability act like like a generator

For the next generation they should add the new hvac controls.. add acoustic glass to the front driver and passenger windows. make the ride clearance more than 8 inches.. make the cargo bed deeper at 20 inches.. right now its just over 16inches its too low.. if they can give another inch or two in rear leg room that would be great.. all this would make the ridgeline the perfect midsize truck..
