For those who don't know, Fearful Harmony only occurs when a mod-chipped PlayStation 1 cannot read a disc. Normal PS1s would show the "Insert a PlayStation disc" error, but the mod-chip is forcing the ps1 to read the disc, so the PS1 reads wrong sectors and fails to boot, causing the music to desync and repeat, and the screen to be glitchy. (The PlayStation logo is stored on the disc itself)

The fearful harmony is actually the sound of the fast chimes that you hear when the game is loading, but it is very very slow due to the searching of that proper data, really hard to search the proper one because it is modchipped and ps1 is forced to read the damaged disc.
nope, cause by a corrupted bios which can happen if the disc is damaged or foreign, it reads it as code and implements it incorrectly, the ps1 just cant handle that, forbidden image is similar to fearful harmony but no audio, it will happen if you insert a foreign disc into a modchipped one.
Nope the standard sound is composed using 3 small soundfiles that the sound chip then modifies according to the code written in the BIOS. I'm unsure how this error occurs but basically it's all using granular synthesis.
@@leefull this error is just beacuse the disc is a PC disc (i think so) the PS1 cannot recognize a damn, but its modchipped so its forced to read it, it tries to restart but since its still trying to find PS1 data its overloaded causing the fearful harmony and the glitched out screen.

I know what that bell chiming is. In the making of the PS1 startup, Sony used 3 sounds. The bell glissando we hear in Fearful Harmony is the normal version of the original bell chime.

All of y'all are so wrong. It's the original sound that the BIOS chops up to make the intro (at increasing speed during the glitch). Not the actual intro itself. You can actually hear a slowed-down version of it in the PS logo part of the startup. If you look up the PS1's sound files you can hear it.
The Solar Sun console also has that error, but the SS-5557 (only model that was made and sold because other models proved to be defective and always stuck on the error screen) has Solar Sorrow that has the ORIGINAL STARTUP SOUNDTRACK that was too scary to be used, even the dev's thoughts were "GET RID OF IT!".
When I was little I would sometime invite my friends to play the PS1 and sometimes they would be scared of the PS1 starting sounds. First of all I don’t even know why people are scared of the PS1 starting sound, I think it sounds beautiful
My story: in 2013 i was 4, one day i woke up, went to play on my PS1. but I don't know what really happened but ... this fearful harmony appeared on my PS1! when this song started to play, i was very scared because my parents were sleeping and i was alone in the room, i was for a long time sitting in the corner of the room with this song playing and i didn't have the courage to get up and turn off the video game . until my father came and said: -child what happened to the console? I was too scared to answer so I started to cry ... my dad turned off the video game and took me to bed. this is the story of how I was traumatized by a video game.
Lol, once this started playing when I put this random disc in, first time I heard this [2007], screamed at the top of my lungs. Nightmares for months. It still gives me nightmares now 😂
(In Chills Voice) Number 5, the fearful harmony catastrophe, there was a boy named justin who was playing his ps1 at 3am but put in a foreign disc, and then the ps1 booted up like normal but then the screen got all distorted and the fearful harmony sound started playing repeatedly, and justin got freaked out and he went to leave his room and get away from the playstation but his door was locked and couldn't be opened, and justin started screaming at the top of his lungs for his mom and his dad but they were at a friends house spending the night, the next morning justin was found dead by his parents and his ears were pouring blood as the playstation was still playing the fearful harmony soundtrack. Nobody knows what happened to Justin but I just hope he's in a better place
I actually believe that you could die from this sound if you’re listening with your headphones at max volume or if you have your tv a max volume those chime sounds were hurting my ears while listening to this video
You have to either have a modded console or have a certain disc or technique to do it, so you gotta take that into consideration. I've never run into this as a kid thankfully
This actually happens because the disc can't be read, and so it's trying to redo the intro over and over again to try and read the disc, but it maxes out the CPU, causing the PS1 to slow down immensely.
Anybody else find this more relaxing than scary? Like, the more it goes on, the more magical it sounds. I like to imagine Cloud in the Lifestream, gazing around at the beauty of everything while this plays.
Imagine if you had nothing to sleep to, so you put on your favorite PS1 game to listen to a song in the game, all of a sudden, the room goes dark, and then 2 minutes later out of nowhere fearful harmony starts playing.
Fun Fact: It probably doesn't happen often or if you've already seen it, but sometimes the original menu (white tiles) will pop up for a bit and shows 2 unused graphics for both Memory Card and CD Player. Memory Card: Half image of PlayStation Console with 2 Memory Cards being inserted to the console. CD Player: Half image of an Piano on the left with Music notes on the right, couple of them H O T and extended.
Just watched a video about the startup of the PS1 and that high pitched jingle you hear @ 1:44 is the actual normal speed sound byte stored inside the console. Basically the PS1 theme we’ve come to remember and love are slowed down versions of some sound fx stored in there and mashed up together to make that sequence - and I guess forcing an error on the console just does some whacky stuff with those stored sound bytes. In this case, looping it.
It’s the normal startup sound but certain parts are repeated many times. Similar to if your PC began lagging in a game and you kept getting lagged backwards.
Fun fact: Fearful harmony is actually trying to play the second half of the ps1 startup sound that plays when a disc has been found, but due to corruption, it is actually playing the same sounds very very slowly... thus making this fearful sound.

All of y'all are so wrong. It's the original sound that the BIOS chops up to make the intro (at increasing speed during the glitch). Not the actual intro itself. You can actually hear a slowed-down version of it in the PS logo part of the startup. If you look up the PS1's sound files you can hear it.

So much for "reloaded"; it didn't even load once!
Can you please tell me something more about that console?
Can't find anything on Google
The console does not exist in real life, only in my imagination.

It still gives me nightmares now 😂
BRO THIS TELLS YOU HOW SCARY FEARFUL HARMONY IS. lucky I don’t have a PS1 because I don’t wanna hear this ding da ding da ding shit

Why does it feel like that the PS1's BIOS was so poorly made/broken.
Well, they had to fit it into 512 kilobytes!
Anybody else find this more relaxing than scary? Like, the more it goes on, the more magical it sounds. I like to imagine Cloud in the Lifestream, gazing around at the beauty of everything while this plays.

It probably doesn't happen often or if you've already seen it, but sometimes the original menu (white tiles) will pop up for a bit and shows 2 unused graphics for both Memory Card and CD Player.

What’s even more cool is how people find these glitches
Fun fact: Fearful harmony is actually trying to play the second half of the ps1 startup sound that plays when a disc has been found, but due to corruption, it is actually playing the same sounds very very slowly... thus making this fearful sound.
