Sony PlayStation & PlayStation 2 BIOS Sounds With Respective Pitches

- You might be wondering how I managed to get all of those weird non-standard numbers used for various sampling rates and pitches.
It turns out those values come from iteratively multiplying or dividing standard sampling rate values (e.g.: 11025, 22050, 32000, 44100, 48000, etc...) with the 12th root of two and the 24th root of two. This way you get all possible semitones and also semisemitones.
Both the PlayStation and the PlayStation 2 are natively capable of treating recorded audio samples as instruments, each reproduced with 12 notes between each octave or even 24 notes between each octave.
This project took me forever.
I had to first extract the Sony 4-bit ADPCM streams from the BIOS dumps using hex editors and some online documentation, figure out how the PlayStation 1 & 2 manage pitches and then convert the various streams with the respective pitches I could find in the code of each BIOS.
Not all possible combinations are included in this video since there are too many of them, but there's still a reasonable amount.
Also, there is no echo simulation.

Things like this are fascinating, you realise it really is only a combination of sounds that could make good memories, and equally bad ones, for those growing up with the consoles.
it could also be just an extraction and possible seperation from the audio files
i don't think there's enough peole talking about how crazy the sound design of the ps2 menu is, the keyboard slam being played at multiple pitches being used as the startup sound, the short jingles with long reverb tails being used for entering the menu and getting the rsod, the waterfall-like ambience sounds and the simple yet futuristic sounds used when you select stuff in the menu all come together in a way that makes the console sound kinda alien and out of this world
Seriously, the way how there's been so much attention and analysis paid to Brian Eno's startup sound for Windows 95 should have already happened to this as well! It's the complexity of it that 1) keeps us intrigued after all these years and 2) is why it deserves a proper breakdown/analysis.
The system architecture of the PS2's 'Emotion' engine is also totally unique in its design even when compared to the other Playstations, which for the longest time made it super tricky to emulate reliably. I imagine Sony really must have felt like they had alien technology on their hands.

The PS1 startup was composed on a Roland D-50, and the PS2 startup sounds like it was made on a Korg Wavestation (from what I'm assuming).
If that's true, it speaks volumes about the exceptional quality of the Korg Wavestation synthesizer. I use that VST for literally everything and it never fails to impress me how good of an instrument it is

Starting at 2:11: It appears that the ambient sounds were recorded from a water park.
I remember hearing the PS1 sounds separately when I was playing a game on a emulator. The way how I did it was using an outdated plugins for the video and audio. When when bios starts. I hold the bar of the window and it was only playing one sound (0:54). When the sound fades away I let go of it and and started playing the rest without the first part of the jingle playing.
How did you feel when you discovered that for the first time?

If I remember correctly, the 460Hz tone was used during the testing mode on some consoles, though was pitched to 1000Hz.
Also, how do you know that the memory card I/O error sound is really what it's used for? I haven't been able to find any videos that show an error like that in action.
Videos that show the memory card I/O error and playing back that sound are difficult to find. I remember seeing one, but I cannot find it at the moment.
It is possible to easily and forcefully replicate it though, both on a real console and on an emulator, assuming you have the tools.
It mostly involves soft-modding the console with tools like uLaunchELF or wLaunchELF and FreeMCBoot.
All you have to do is make a binary backup/dump of your PS2 memory card, manipulate the binary dump file on your PC (mostly using a memory card editor or a hex editor) in such a way that a specific save file of your choice, gets its metadata corrupted.
Once that is done, you try to use the normal PS2 menus to delete the save or copy the save file to another memory card. If it fails, that sound will play.
@@warmoddities9167 It's possible to recreate that sound by attempting to copy a GT4 save to another memory card, or restarting your console during an autosave.

Yep, fearful harmony is a glitch that allows you to hear this sound in its raw form, which obviously is never meant to happen

@@lickablestinkage7783 yeah, if you have a non-modchipped PS1 it never happens, you just get the PS1 RSOD, but if you have a modchipped PS1 (I forgot that on which models it happens) the PS1 is forced to read the disc (bc it’s modchipped, duh) but it just can’t and it uses one of the PS1 BIOS sounds

@@branislavweber7635this is true. In fact nobody created the PS2 sounds, let me explain. After the first PS2 was manufactured in 1999, they did the first ever boot up test (after the PS2 was designed, printed, and assembled/created). The PS2 using its motherboard, lasers, PSU, CPU, and processors created these sounds upon startup, releasing the power of the 2000s gaming era. The rest was history.
