  • This is a quick tutorial on how I set up my AT&T Netgear Nighthawk MR1100 to use my Visible phones sim card to deliver internet rather than using the phone's built in hotspot.
    Use referral code - 37CS6s when ordering service.

      hi just saw your video and that is great news! that it still work i had a question maybe its a stupid one lol, but i was wondering if i could just buy the sim card and pit it in the night hawk after i unlock it. another question is have you expirenced any data caps or throttling on your m1?

    • @tonycoleman9766
      @tonycoleman9766  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheFlannel101 You will need to activate the sim card from a compatible phone first last I knew.
      They don't have data caps.
      While using the M1, I have not noticed a lot of throttling however, it can slow down quite a bit during peak business hours anyways. So, if you are thinking of making this your primary internet, I don't encourage that use. You will also find that it has a horrible ping time and that gaming would not be optimal on this service.

    Hey Tony, I just received my At&t Nighthawk 4g router today and I was able to get it to work with my Visible sim card. The only challenging part was logging into the At&T set up software. When you first try & log in, the user name is populated as "admin", but you also need a password. I kept trying to put in the wifi password that the MR1100's screen shows but the password it wants is "attadmin". Now I just need to order a good cross polarized outdoor antenna and I think I might finally be able to get decent internet at this off-grid cabin I have. It would be so nice to get off of satellite service. Thanks for posting this!

      You are welcome. The login for the AT&T administration is different then the WiFi password for good reason. You don't want just anyone having login rights to your hotspot. This should ALWAYS be kept different. Glad it is working for you. Satellite offerings really do suck.

      I'm not sure why my reply didn't stick, but Visible has been cracking down on this for several months now. I have not tried getting a sim to work on the Verizon network and so cannot give you a solution at this time. They were blocking me months back and I stopped bothering with it since their speeds are outright terrible most of the time. Basically what it is doing is that their network cannot detect what device (phone) you have and so is blocking the sim until it detects it properly. Obviously in a hotspot that won't happen naturally. You may want to look into changing the hotspots IMEI and MAC addresses. I don't know how well it will work or how hard it would be but may be a work around.

      Even without hotspotting...speeds in my area tanked to next to nothing. I literally get like 500Kbps speeds during the day on my phone now. I used to get like 50MBps speeds. So, changing up the TTL settings does no good when the base speeds are that slow anyways. And this is pretty much everyone in my area and not just my lines. I hope that helps.

    • @tonycoleman9766
      @tonycoleman9766  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would just buy one that is already unlocked. The older models like mine are getting pretty cheap these days. Yes it still works just fine as I've had mine going for months now with no issues. Don't expect fast speeds though. If you get lucky...great. But like my phones without hotspotting are averaging 2-5 Mbps these days. So, not sure why as my area isn't real congested. It also doesn't matter on how much usage either. I have probably 6 or 7 Visible lines and they all do it. But if your folks aren't heavy data users, it should be fine. No you don't have to change the IMEI. Some people do that to try and trick Visible when they are manipulating their TLS traffic. If your M1 is already unlocked, just follow the instructions in the video.

    • @tonycoleman9766

      Scott, you will need to activate the sim in a phone first using the Visible application from the playstore. No, Visible does not care if you move your sim to other phones thus resulting in a different IMEI. Thus detecting the IMEI from the hotspot should make no difference.

  • @mikestone9129
    @mikestone9129 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Tony, does this work better than just using the sim in a cell phone for using as a hot spot? What is the advantage to using the Nighthawk instead of the phone?

    • @tonycoleman9766
      @tonycoleman9766  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The answer to that is situational and subjective. Some of the phones from Visible only let you hotspot one device at a time via WiFi. For example the ZTE Blade A3 Prime only lets me connect one device at a time that way. This of course is assuming nobody is hacking or manipulating anything. With a hotspot, I'm not limited like on the phone. The downside to a hotspot is that it is only delivering data and thus doesn't use any of the other service capabilities like phone service and SMS. There are more pros and cons to each but this should give you an idea what I'm talking about.

    Cant you set up the APN settings on the Netgear mobile app? I don't have an ATT plan for mobile hotspot etc... so how would I go about changing the settings on ATT site? I bought my Unlocked MR1100 @ Amazon and I barely ordered my Visible Sim. However, I tried putting my iPhone's nano Sim card with a Nano > Micro SIM adapter but the SIM with the adapter doesn't fit. Any recommendation's on a nano sim > micro sim adapters? Thank you!

    • @tonycoleman9766
      @tonycoleman9766  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, you don't do anything on AT&T's site. Not sure where the confusion is coming from. Second, when you say your sim doesn't fit, how so? The adapters are pretty universal in size. I have also seen people not use an adapter and just put the nano in and still work. You just have to line it up just right to do it.

    This was an awesome video. I travel a lot for work and mobile hotspot on a phone is always slower than a dedicated hotspot. I want to order a visible phone and connect it to the netgear nighthawk that I see BestBuy has in stock. It's already unlocked. Would this work as simple as your video? Or would I have to buy the hotspot and activate it first with another carrier first in the store? I noticed you already had connections with Att first.

    • @tonycoleman9766
      @tonycoleman9766  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being unlocked already, you shouldn't need to hook it up to a carrier first. If it is a different model than the MR1100, I cannot say if it will work as I have only tried the MR1100. My MR1100 was bought unlocked off of eBay. My usage with AT&T shouldn't matter as the device was already unlocked.

    So Tony, I've also got an At&t specific Netgear nighthawk MR1100 that I got from best buy. What did you mean when you said your nighthawk was "unlocked"? I see that you got visible to work with your nighthawk which makes me wonder how that works since visible is through Verizon and my nighthawk is At&t only. If all I have to do is do what you did in the video, then I don't see why they sell a universal nighthawk for a hundred dollars more at all! Lol

    • @tonycoleman9766

      You can get your Nighthawk carrier unlocked. This means that you can contact AT&T to have them give you a code to unlock it to use with other carriers. You can do this with most cell phones as well. However, most have a policy to require that you have had it on their service for a specific amount of time before they will allow it to be unlocked. I purchased mine from someone that had already unlocked it and provided me with the code. Just ask AT&T what it would take to get yours unlocked.

      Speckles, if you bought your ATT Nighthawk at Best buy (it is locked to the ATT Provider,) and you will only be able to use ATT SIM card in that case. In addition On eBay 3rd party sellers have Unlocked ATT Branded Nighthawk routers for sale. They also sell unbranded unlocked Nighthawks. It is possible to unlock an ATT branded Nighthawks hotspot yourself and there are several videos on TH-cam videos on how to do this, however it probably not for the novice user to do unless they can understand the terminology in these unlock videos.

      I have no idea what would trigger or not. I honestly doubt they are all that concerned as their current ToS doesn't say anything about putting it in a hotspot per se. They can and do throttle the crap out of their connections and claim it is deprioritization but I think that is just more of Verizon BS political talk to justify throttling. I don't think turning off the hotspot will matter. I do think if you have a lot of devices going it is a pretty good red flag that you are blatantly misusing it though. My advice doesn't matter as I don't work for Visible and have no say on what goes. Using it other than the way they advertise opens you up to fail.

      All smart phones have the ability to tether/hotspot as long as the carrier doesn't disable it. It isn't just an iPhone thing. They also advertise allowing hotspotting/tethering at a reduced speed. I personally don't recommend using the service as a replacement for home internet. I do use the service for unlimited data though running beermoney applications. If people do start abusing the service, I'm sure they will make changes at some point to curb the behavior. However, with that said, I noticed no service interruptions while I had it in my hotspot. I have since moved it back to the phone for further testing. I will probably move it back and forth based on my needs.

    Question: if I sign up with an iPad imei (which I generated using an app...& Visible has deemed it compatible) how do I get a phone number? And does the phone number actually have had to be connected to a old Verizon service?
    Option 2: I have a prepaid phone that is unlocked and also is deemed compatible by visible....that number was previously connected to a prepaid service acct like SimMobile or w/e.....is that better to use?!

    • @tonycoleman9766
      @tonycoleman9766  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For one, getting a phone number is just part of signing up. What won't work is doing the porting deal unless you actually port a number from an existing service. I successfully ported my Google Voice number over. Google charges $3 for that. However, the only time I would port a number over is if I was taking advantage of one of their offers. Otherwise, they will just assign you one when you set up service.
      Second, if the phone is on their compatible list and is indeed unlocked, then give it a go. I don't know what your intentions are but as far as I know it should work. Whether it is better or not is up to you.
