Hi Jake- Looking for some advice on this: 1) I called ATT and unlocked the MR1100 hotspot. 2) I put in a Cricket Data SIM in the hotspot, changed the APN, and it worked fine. 3) I then took out the data SIM, changed the IMEI to an unlocked phone that I had lying around. 4) I got a new SIM (for a cell phone) made from another carrier (GCI) and when I put it in the hotspot and changed the APN, not the Hotspot says that it is locked 5) I can put that same GCI SIM into the unlocked phone and the phone works, the phone doesn't say that it is locked, but when I put the SIM back in the hotspot it shows up as locked again. 6) I can put the Cricket Data SIM back into the hotspot, and the hotspot doesn't show locked, but it also doesn't work anymore because the IMEI is no longer a data device. Any help is appreciated!
I'm not on the road like you folks but I am tired of my internet creeping up in cost... I just ordered a renewed M1 from your link.... I will most likely purchase an antenna to hang out on the eves of the house. If I can lower internet by $50 a month, it will only take a few months for this to pay for itself. And of course, the benefit of taking it in the R-Pod when out and about. Thanks for the blog post.... I have been looking for a solution like this.. Fingers crossed.
Let me know how it works. I've just purchased my teardrop camper and need an inexpensive wifi solution for my travels. I want a plug-and-play type solution you mentioned. Something for home and take on the road, too!
Great Video. You hooked us up! Literally. Thank you. Got another router that allowed a imei number change within the router software. I connected to the cellular network with great speeds but stopped using it after seeing comments discussing ttl. I don't want to get throttled or shut down. I am getting contradictory information about setting the ttl. If we want the router to mimic an android phone what do I set the ttl to. 63, 64, or 65? I think 64 is right but not sure. Thank you in advance
I work for AT&T. There's a way to get an unlimited hotspot for under $35 a month with no discounts. Cheaper still if they have military/first responder/teacher discount. It involves a phantom IMEI number, and a new line added on Premium. Not every AT&T employee knows about it, because it's not exactly policy. But it works.
Thank you very much for this info!! I'm going to do this but was wondering Will this work on any 4g lte routers in case one don't want to spend almost $300 for that router... if that's the best option I will go with it!
This solution has been incredibly reliable for us! We've used well over 100GB a month with zero issues! Hope you experience similar success. If you have any questions, please reach out and we will do the best to help you!! 🤘😀
What kind of up/down speeds are you getting? Could this also be done with a pepwave? I would like the option of running two carriers if I needed to. ie. Visible and mint mobile is what I had in mind.
I haven’t been able to get any internet with the visible….I put my old unactivated Verizon SIM card in it shows internet “but” doesn’t connect (blue light is on) no internet connection… I have watched every you tube video out there and read most all.. since the IMEI is now a cell it’s hard to figure what to do…even when I connect to a computer nothing..
Have you tried re-writing the IMEI on a Netgear LM1200? The LM1200 seems better suited for use on the Verizon network than the Nighthawk M1 because the M1 lacks band 13 which is Verizon's most prevalent frequency in rural areas. At 700 Mhz, Band 13 frequency has better range and penetration in wooded and obstructed sites than the higher frequency bands that the M1 utilizes for Verizon. A brand new LM1200 is only $149 which is less than half the price of a used Nighthawk M1. I'm interested in learning if you or any of the viewers of this video have been able to alter the IMEI and TTL of an LM1200.
No, I have not tried the LM1200. The older M1 is a combined LTE Modem/WIFI router. The LM1200 is an LTE Modem only and needs an outboard router for WIFI. While the LM1200 has more features, I don't know if the DC unlocker software works on the LM1200. I suspect not, only because the software lists the M1 as a Netgear/Sierra Wireless router, and odds are they used a more modern modem than the Sierra Wireless modem in the older M1. But I could be wrong, you would have to try it. If the modem happens to be from Sierra Wireless, it may have similar software interface and you might be able to change the IMEI. I think you will have to do the experiment yourself.

I was an early adopter to Visible. Last I knew, to use my iphone as a hotspot, the phone had to be directly tethered to the computer, limiting you to 1 device and continually charging the phone. Does this allow you to connect to more than one computer at a time and put the phone on an on/off timer to keep from continually charging?
How about an update? Is it still working good? Anyone else try this? Is this still a viable option in 2023 going into 2024? Thank you! Subscribed! (Sorry. Just saw you did an update on top of the description. Thanks!)
Hey Jake I appreciate this dude! Quick question - Do you just order the SIM and stick it in the Netgear to get it started? Or do you have to get a phone also to first activate the SIM and then plug it in the Netgear? If you just got a SIM, what SIM did you get on the Visible site? Thanks in advance!
correct. you will need to put the visible sim into a phone first to activate the sim using the Visible app. I selected to "bring my own phone" on the visible website to have them send me just the SIM card
For the guys getting throttled, the mr1100 is not a good device when using for providers that needs ttl settings, you will consume a hotspot data depending of the plan, you need an external router that can use ttl settings.
Jake & Heather - THank you for the post. I picked up the M1, everything is working great while the M1 is connected directly to my computer via USB - Speed test = 70Mbps. Speed tests over WIFI = 20Mbps? The signal is strong, full bars on WIFI and the M1 signal doesn't change connected via USB or disconnect. What do you think the issue could be?
The router sucks, my roommate and I would use it and crashes all the time. I suggest using the M1 as the modem and connect it to a dedicated router. Using the Ethernet port. Makes a world of difference
I’m stuck at the part where you select manufacturer and select model. When I hit the search button it says “access denied, check firewall, antivirus, try to launch software as administrator”
Great video! For some reason when I login to DC through my home Wi-Fi it connects to the server ok, but then I plug in the device to the computer (change the settings) then it seems like it stops using my home Wi-Fi and will not connect with the DC server unless I unplug the hotspot.
Hi, we have an M1 and have a plan where we can share a dedicated data SIM, plus the data on our phone plans for a total of 85gigs of data per month. Why not just use hotspotting from our phones.? Because although the iPhone and the M1 can have data speeds of about 270mbs, if we use the phone as a hotspot we only get about 30mbs. These speeds are close to the CBD, Perth, Western Australia and not what we can get when travelling away from the city in country towns or in more remote areas. But, it gives an idea of the possible speeds on a 4g LTE device. There is a new 5G Netgear M5 available here, but the coverage for 5G is still very limited and it’s not worth the extra cost. Our shared plans are expensive, about AUD120 per month for the three, but our provider has the best coverage for rural and remote areas of Australia.
Awesome video, I had no idea you could trick a mobile hotspot like that. Question: Have there been any places (natl parks, forest roads etc) where your hotspot just couldn’t connect to the Verizon network? If so, where were they?
ok so Jake ! do you know if this set up still work nowadays ? we are desperately in need of a solution for our rv wifi and are ready to try it if it works..
Ok, I’m really confused…..I purchased the hotspot in your link, then purchased a cheap phone for the imei, when setting up my visible account it said that phone was not compatible with visible so I purchased another cheap phone that was compatible from visible and now I just read somewhere that I need a specific SIM card for the mobile hotspot for internet…….I’m lost…….lol ! Help?
So this only uses the signal it creates from the late modem right? It can’t pick up abs rebroadcast other WiFi signals like from an rv park? Assuming that’s true, if I use my visible sim in this, and it thinks it’s a phone, and then I pick up the net gears signal with my router and rebroadcast it, will it still be un-throttled or will visible recognize that it’s being rebroadcast abs throttle it down? Hope that’s clear, lol. Great video!
I'm only starting to believe that this actually worked because of your video but!!! Still skeptical, Now please help me here, if come on if I take this with me on vacation to Jamaica, will it work? and How would it? and what would I have to do? Is it strong enough to drive a 55" TV?
Are you familiar with the AT&T ZTE Mobley ? I got their $20/month unlimited data plan in 2017! AT&T is now limiting me to 25g/month! Would like to discuss this with you if possible.
@JakeHeather So it's been almost two years since this video was posted. Is this still working? Has anything updated in regard to hardware or method? Would this work with any carrier? The Verizon network as large and vast as it is does not have service in many of the locations we camp. We have found Cricket to be more reliable.
We’ve been told this method still works but some haven’t had success with Visible as the carrier. We still use ours with T-Mobile sims and have good success
I tried this with no luck. I actually ordered a junker phone from visible and did the steps in the video perfectly. I got the internet to work, but it was throttled at 5 mbps (phone was getting 25-30mbps. Do you think I did something wrong or do you think visible caught on and found other ways of ID’ing the device? Any suggestions?
Since Visible does not roam you might be in an area no service. Have you considered getting another cheap secondary carrier on different network just in case?
Would you mind sharing with me how to use DC-Unlocker on my MacBook Pro? I’m fairly new to Mac and do not have access to a windows/Microsoft based computer… Thsnks and I hope you hear from you
Party pay no more. Visible service went down hill after they quit party pay and changed their service. They want you to sign up for a more expensive service. I'm not going to play their games. The next phone I buy I will drop visible and go with mint. Mint uses T-Mobile networks. Also T-Mobile has a home device that works wherever T-Mobile has cell towers. 73
Hi there, I have this same exact set-up and it still works, but I wanted to get a back up nighthawk router in case the one I have goes down. I bought the new nighthawk MR6500 and I couldn't change the imei# errors kept coming up after it stated that the test was successful and they took my credit. I think it just doesn't work with the newer models, do you happen to know? I might just go back and by the same model in your video. :)
Yeah i think i remember an older comment from someone saying they had the same issue with the newer model. I can’t confirm myself but I know others are still having success with the older model
@@JakeandHeather Ok sounds good. Thanks! I think it might be b/c its a newer model with a different software. I will just get the same model router and change the imei# on that and have as a back up. Thank you for the video and helping us :)
Followed the video to a T and at the end I realized the router I bought wasn’t unlocked… 🤦♂️ So I’m reaching out with a couple questions if you can help. I’m hoping the seller will release it from their AT&T account to make it unlocked, but if they can’t I’ll probably just buy a new one. If I get a new one can I use the same IMEI number from the phone I previously used to rewrite the first router I bought or will I have to get a different one? Second question, if that’s the route I go and eventually sell the first router, will I need to change back the IMEI to its original one? Thanks for your time!
Great info. I have a Nighthawk MR1100 with an AT&T SIM, unlimited thru BixWireless. Signal varies between Fair and poor. I need to tether to it as well for my work PC ass well as being able to stream TV (Wife). We use about 200Gb of data s month. Will this work on the 1100 and if not, do I have a way to revert back to the old settings? I would of course keep a record of the current IMEI. Thanks.
We have purchased an M1, we can add an additional line to our Tmobile for $25 per month. We have an older LG phone. Would this work for the set up you describe?? (We just got our van and ready for adventure?
This doesn’t work on visible anymore. They limit hotspot to 5mbps. And they see the M1, even with a phone IMEI as a phone using a personal hotspot. Multiple devices connected makes it even worse. Any fixes?
Thanks so much for this info! If you have a phone that supports dual sim, do you think it's possible to use the IMEI number of the "digital sim" on the hotspot?
So I am connected to WiFi but for some reason when I connect my nighthawk with the cord my network on my computer switches to the nighthawk network which obviously isn’t connected with no SIM card. So essentially I lose internet. Any idea for a work around? Or what the issue is? Also, how is everyone getting the SIM card in the nighthawk? It is a nano SIM card but the nighthawk has the larger sim compatibility.
Hello, thank you for this! My partner and I work full time using lots of zoom. Has using been methodology provided consistent speeds for you? Have zoom worked well and fast? Does it no longer throttle? Throttling has been been the bane of our existence
What would happen if i used the IMEI number from my current cellphone ? I don’t have an old phone nor could I figure out how to find an IMEI number online
Got this going a couple of days ago and was working great using straight talk, however I got a message saying that my 15gb of hotspot data was used up and now it doesn’t work. For some reason straight talk still recognizes it as a hotspot and not a cell phone. I followed all the steps. Anyone have any recommendations? PLEASE HELP ME 😭
I have another question, another video said that the router that we picked had to have capability as "bridger" or "rage extender" so that you are able to change your TTL. i looked up the netgear that you use or recommend and I dont see those specs or details on it. Do you know why you were able to change your TTL if it doesnt have those specs. Also, does this has VPN and is it necessary for anything

Jake & Heather, how do i get a imei?, my phones i have are too old and not compatible on their list
For the router I used a 30$ raspberry pi 4 with a 25$ 4G HAT for it. Way better buy, way more control.
I'm not criticizing you, but I highly doubt an average person would understand how to use a RPi.
@@JJFlores197 that's about as easy as Linux gets at that kinda level. Besides android and all that watered down crap.
@@User_1795 That is true, but again, you have to keep in mind the intended audience of the video.
Worked perfectly.... Thanks
yea-man an lady/great /all ways liked your videos/will keep on watching/do you have 5g or 4g/is the unit 4g/thanks much
Are you familiar with the AT&T ZTE Mobley ? I got their $20/month unlimited data plan in 2017! AT&T is now limiting me to 25g/month! Would like to discuss this with you if possible.
Visible knows when you put it in the Nighthawk. I did this and they completely cut it off the next day. I think I will redo this with his method.
Read the comments section - you'll have to change the TTL settings.
@@YasarHabib I can't find that anywhere. Change what, where?
any idea if something like this would need to be done with a 4g dongle? thanks for this dope vid
Just did this. Followed all the steps and I’m throttled at 5mbps
my device says no broadband connected :/
@@TysonAnderson-gp9hq mine did too. I was sent a micro sim so the sim had to be perfectly lined up. Or you can get a sim adapter
Did you change your TTL Value on your laptop?
@@JakeandHeather I did. No luck
Since Visible does not roam you might be in an area no service. Have you considered getting another cheap secondary carrier on different network just in case?
Hello, thank you for this insightful video. How do I create an account and what's the name of the operation should I purchase?
Would you mind sharing with me how to use DC-Unlocker on my MacBook Pro? I’m fairly new to Mac and do not have access to a windows/Microsoft based computer… Thsnks and I hope you hear from you
Did you guys just use a nano-micro sim card adapter for the netgear m1? Visible will only take phones that have nanos in them.
hi jake how did you purchase the credit, did you use the app paysera or did you do it through sms? Thank you
Party pay no more. 73
Or just find a WiFi router that'll take a WiFi signal and rebound it.
But it would be nice to be far into the woods with internet.
Off-grid means not being traceable. You’re traceable.
(We just got our van and ready for adventure?
hello, i sent you an email but have not heard from you.. is this still working as of Oct 28 2021 .. ?
Hi there!! Thanks so much for the video! When I go to visible, I only see phones. How do I just get the SIM card?
This doesn’t work on visible anymore. They limit hotspot to 5mbps. And they see the M1, even with a phone IMEI as a phone using a personal hotspot. Multiple devices connected makes it even worse. Any fixes?
Is there a solution to this
@@sanbenito1980 I had to go with a MOFI router and an ATT business internet plan at about 75 month. All I could do.
Thanks so much for this info! If you have a phone that supports dual sim, do you think it's possible to use the IMEI number of the "digital sim" on the hotspot?
great question and one I dont have the answer to haha, I guess it would be worth a shot
@Jake & Heather Can this be done using a hello mobile sim?
So I am connected to WiFi but for some reason when I connect my nighthawk with the cord my network on my computer switches to the nighthawk network which obviously isn’t connected with no SIM card. So essentially I lose internet. Any idea for a work around? Or what the issue is? Also, how is everyone getting the SIM card in the nighthawk? It is a nano SIM card but the nighthawk has the larger sim compatibility.
Bro did anyone ever answer this cuz these were my exact problems
It’s only $50/a year for unlimited 4G in my country. I need to find a dealer for it.
Let me guess. socialist?
Hello, thank you for this! My partner and I work full time using lots of zoom. Has using been methodology provided consistent speeds for you? Have zoom worked well and fast? Does it no longer throttle? Throttling has been been the bane of our existence
I’m reasonably sure that the purpose of switching the IMEI number to identify as a phone is to bypass the throttling issue.
So far, they don't throttle. That could change at any time, no guarantees. But so far the gamble is a win.
That Voodoo Ranger by New Belgium is awesome.
Ty for this great info 👍 👌
What would happen if i used the IMEI number from my current cellphone ? I don’t have an old phone nor could I figure out how to find an IMEI number online
Got this going a couple of days ago and was working great using straight talk, however I got a message saying that my 15gb of hotspot data was used up and now it doesn’t work. For some reason straight talk still recognizes it as a hotspot and not a cell phone. I followed all the steps. Anyone have any recommendations? PLEASE HELP ME 😭
Hi, I noticed you have a nice looking swivel wall mount for your TV....would you by chance happen to know what exact brand of tv mount that is?
That's an ergotron LX.
You gotta join a party with visible to get the 25 a month or it's regularly 40.
Yeah and it's not hard at all
Myself I'd be even willing to dish out the $40 if it is unlimited. Lol.
Definitely not bad at 40 either but they make it so easy to join a party. I did reddit party and there are 5000 people in it.
We are moving to a campground for awhile my phone barely works mostly it don’t will this still work for working my smart tv and phone? Thank you!
Thank you
