NIKE ALPHAFLY 3 - WORTH THE CASH? SHOULD YOU BELIEVE THE HYPE? NON SPONSORED REVIEW - EDDBUD
An initial review of the new NIKE ALPHAFLY 3. This is the initial PROTO colourway. A new version launches in early March 2024.
A should i have grabbed with my own cash. This is not a sponsored review and i paid just under £300 for this pair.
Around 23 miles so far with the shoes across several paces and effort levels. Is this shoe worth the price and does it live up to the hype?
I comment on the upper, midsole and outsole after my initial runs.
Let me know your thoughts and opinions down in the comments.
Theres lots to get through here so i have placed in some chapters to help you navigate the video.

Good that I am not the only TH-camr rather underwhelmed by this shoe. Have seen some reviews where they say it is the best ever racer. Maybe it is, as you say, for previous AF lovers and/or those with smaller feet than us. When I did a Shoeoff with the VF3 it was night and day “easier” for me in the VF3. Hard to think of a more conclusive result when I put one shoe up against another.

    • @bbnd5476

A lab test would be more conclusive. The shoe that feels fast isn't always the more efficient one.

@@bbnd5476 true but in a sample size of one (i.e. me) that I like to think that after over 40 years of running and trying countless shoes over the years I usually can tell quite quickly if I am going to think I might want to use a shoe in a race or at least be a good option for sessions. Of course I suspect for many runners this shoe will work very well. It just hasn't for me - nor Edd either given his very average at best ratings.

@TimGrose as much as we like to think that, we will never be able to tell 1-2% differences by feel no matter how much we run. That's why even pros need to do thorough lab tests.

I was given a pair of these while visiting my favorite run store and told I could return them if I wanted to test them. I never considered a Nike racer after trying the Next% when it came out and having pain in my metatarsal after about 8 mi.(I returned them). The Endorphin Pro3 turned out to be the 1st CP shoe that’s felt natural to me and it served me very well in Boston last year, but I was impressed by the step-in comfort of the AF3 as well as the bounce so I gave it a go on a 14+ mi LR. However, my gut feeling is not to risk using something so different, especially since it doesn’t seem to suit my high-cadence gait as naturally as the Endo Pro3. I decided just today to return it and go with either the Endo Pro 4 or a fresh pair of 3’s.
And, I always swore I’d never entertain the risk of a pod breaking after all the months of hard work of marathon training. So how fortuitous it was to see you corroborate my mixed feelings. Maybe it’s not surprising since I’ve never tended to like very squashy midsoles in general.

As I recall Ben Parkes really liked it and he splits Edd & I in shoe sizes and pays for all his shoes. Ben being a UK 12. I did think the AF3 made me run slightly "differently". Is it then any coincidence that Ben got injured shortly after his glowing review and hasn't run for about a month. i feel like people are still putting nike up on a pedestal. they still talk about nike being up there while everyone else is trying to catch up, when in reality that hasnt been the case for the past two years. the super-racers across all brands are performing as good, or better, and the main differences are subjective for each runner. when it comes to the full lineup of running shoes, other brands have surpassed nike (or nike has dropped the ball themselves) a long time ago. invincible, zoom fly, streakfly etc all have better, cheaper, more durable, and better performing options.

It’s a good marathon option but the value of the shoe and potential longevity are trash. Loads of non elite runners use this with good results. I've owned all 3 versions of the AlphaFly. I was never fast enough (still ain't) to get the most out of the V1...that drop really forces a solid forefoot strike, which I just can't hold for the marathon...I tried and suffered in the calves dreadfully in the last 5k. The V2 was a great shoe which worked really well for me, but it fell heavy and bulky near the end of the marathon. But boy....did I feel great after the race. Now the V3...makes me fell like I was one of their test runners, the shoe just feels that perfect for me. It's so light, it's so smooth, so stable. I land on the airpods without even trying.
No discomfort wearing the shoe at all....they disappear on my feet. Not sure what is up with the weight on your shoe. My V3 is over 30g lighter than my own V2 at US 9.5.
Ben Johnson has put over 500miles in his V3 and then ran a marathon in them, that's bonkers. Basically, if the previous versions of the AlphaFly worked for you, V3 will too...and more!

Good review thanks. Interestingly you mentioned how easily the shoe is to get on regarding Triathlon. Speed in getting shoes on (and off too if you do duathlons: run-bike-run) is crucial. It’s probably sacrilege to runners, but most who take part in triathlon and duathlon use elastic laces as their shoes need to be super easy to get on and off. The best shoes tend to have gusseted tongues that will also keep a reasonable shape - so looking at these you might think they’d be perfect, but looks like that’s not the case. It’s never really mentioned in any reviews how easy a shoe is to get on and off, so even one comment helps!! Cheers

    • @EDDBUD
      @EDDBUD  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It’s not the best in this aspect. The shoe itself relies on the laces to secure the top section. The upper does a good job of holding the foot in though it’s tough getting it on. A shoehorn would be needed for a triathlete!

Hi Edd, while I think the review is excellent, I've got to say that I have to disagree with you and Tim, have run a 10 miler and half marathon in this shoe and it is night and day better than the VF3 for me and actually felt strong throughout both races, especially in the second half of the race. Felt stable, fast and fit true to size. Agree that I wouldn't do 5k or 10k in them though, I'd use the Hoka Rocket X2 for that.

I like to think we both say (or at least imply) we can only really say how a shoe is for us personally. TBH I have never liked any of the AF versions compared to the VF and as my wife Sue rightly pointed out if you did not like the AF1 or AF2 overly much why did you think the AF3 was going to be radically better. I have always thought there was a fairly even divide between those who like an AF over a VF and vice versa which perhaps explains why some other TH-camrs seem to like the AF3 a lot more than we do.

VF1 still my favourite I think - partly as the fit for my narrow feet is so much better. I had to pull in the VF3 so tight I thought I was going to snap the laces although they have now "moulded" to my foot well now. Maybe it is actually 99% "you" these days as it always used to be.
