HOKA CIELO X1 - The BEST HOKA SUPER SHOE YET? BETTER THAN THE ADIDAS PRIMEX? - EDDBUD
An initial review of the new super shoe from HOKA, the CIELO X1 is a shoe i have bought with my own cash to bring you this review.
Is got vibes of the alphafly 1, mizuno wave rebellion pro and primex, but is it any good? It is certainly in the primex weight category but with less stack than first appears.
A big old combo stack of super soft foam along with a carbon plate, a unique upper knit material and design and hefty slab of rubber on the outsole makes this one quite the character. A bit like yours truly apparently!

Kiptum had such an incredible impact in such a short amount of time. My favourite memory has to be when he missed that bottle in London and broke away from the pack. RIP Kelvin ❤
Yes. The mindset was, oh well. Crack on. RIP 👍🏼
Well said on Kelvin. There are too many 'clickbait' videos on youtube - you did it just right.
I got these based on your review and BITR but I saw yours first. After 2 runs I would place these in my top shoes of all time. I find the upper to be exceptionally comfortable for a super shoe. I'm coming from the Strungs and the Endorrphins. They have a great lockdown while also having a lot of room in the toebox. The laces were just as you said. Once you get used to them you quickly appreciate them. The ride is forward rolling and just makes running easier. I have suffered no side tipping. My sizing was US 10.5 in these and the Endorphins but 10 in the Strungs. These may supplant the Strung 1 as a new go to shoe. I'm glad I took your advice. Thanks!
Yeah the laces got a raw deal from some!
I thought i commented already, but maybe not...Well said Edd, an absolute tragedy... My favorite memory of Kiptum is when he began pulling away in Valencia and began doing the sign of the cross on himself. I thought to myself, he's thanking God for his enormous talent and asking to join him to the finish line. So sad he's gone. RIP Kelvin...
It’s tragic. I can’t believe it. 😔
He's in a better place now, with jesus. Away from this filthy sinful world which gets worse every day that passes. Terrible situation for his family though.
I purchased my pair the day they were released and I have to say I love them possibly more than any other super shoe I've worn. I've logged about 30 miles in them and think they are usable at almost any pace, are fun to wear, and have the most comfortable upper and fit of any plated shoe. I've purchased far more plated shoes than I'm willing to admit and have always viewed them more as a tool for a specific purpose, not something to necessarily be enjoyed. But the Cielo X1 has changed that for me and I actually look forward to wearing them. And I couldn't agree more, the echo chamber about the laces is pretty comical. Once they're tied and on your feet, I have literally not thought about them once other than the fleeting notion that I appreciate that they don't stretch and change the feel of the shoe. Excellent video yet again, Mr. Bud! And I'll echo other's appreciation for your heartfelt words about Kelvin Kiptum...gone far too soon.
I agree. They rock at any pace. Literally. 👍🏼
Saaaame! I double knotted my laces like I always do, and it was completely fine. The shoes were so comfortable, I don’t just want to race in them I want to train in them. I have one foot wider than the other, which usually gives me issues in shoes with a race day fit. These were spacious and comfy on both feet.
Thanks for the review Edd and the words you spoke regarding Kelvin Kiptum resonated with me. Very sad news.
That was a really nice message at the end Ed, thanks for putting it in there. Really touching. Gone too soon, and my condolences to his and his coaches families
Really cool review !!! Dankeschön 🙏🏼
Love the Kiptum moment. So sad, still can't believe it.
Damn good looking shoe! Won't be buying it but I can see why people might. Hoka design people seem to have their mojo at the moment. Terrible news about Kiptum. Thanks for a really thoughtful segment at the end Edd.
I had to give a tribute. Just so sad isn’t it? 😔
Great video and beautiful words respect 🙏 RIP Kelvin Kiptum 😢
Thank you for the valuable reviewed.
Glad it was helpful!
I figured this would be 350g for me in a UK 13 so hard pass even with an everyday influencer code. Speaking of which seems odd you have to buy so many shoes when lot smaller channels get all sorts. Still we come here whatever for a well informed view. Didn’t like the sound of the wide fit either. Says he still out in his nice & narrow 5 year old and 100g lighter Vaporfly 1. And yeah an actual 40mm for me might be confused with a racing flat :) Good to hear the laces well can be laced as it were.
“That feeling after a run is one of the greatest you can have” - Larry Bird on his passion for running
The bird is a legend!
Thanks for review Edd, I was really confused about the shoes🙃
One of my favs of 2024 so far.
Well said Edd, sad news about Kiptum.
Can’t believe it. Too soon. 😔
Great review Edd
Thanks for tuning in
As a HUGE fan of the OG Prime X, I've been waiting for this shoe! 😀
It’s really their take on that shoe. Vastly more stable though so I can see it appealing to primex fans that perhaps found that model a little wobbly due to the stack. I always found it fine in fairness
@@EDDBUD Yeah, I don't find the Prime X all that unstable either, especially since I've been running in them for a couple years. I'm very mindful when I'm running in them though and just am a bit more aware of pavement imperfections that might trip me up (roads in Boston are horrible). That being said, I am looking for a replacement as at some point I won't be able to get the OG Prime X anymore and your review came at the perfect time! I literally went out at lunch and picked up a pair. Hoping they work out (it snowed here today so gotta wait a day or two to try then outside). Initial fit is quite good, even for my narrow foot. Very pronounced rocker, which I like. Similar cushion to the Prime X, at least waling around in my living room.
Respect for the Kelvin Kiptum tribute Edd. Great video. 👍
Heading out tomorrow to run for 2 hours 35 seconds. For obvious reasons. 👍🏼👊
You got me with the wide toebox ❤. Until today all Hoka shoes were pressing my toes like a nutcracker❗Hoka so called wide was just a looser upper..
Much wider and taller too
Awesome review as always. I really love the adios pro 3. im leaning towards getting this Hoka shoe now. Would you say its more comfortable than adidas pro3? Sometimes the rods bother me late in the marathon. Im looking for a marathon shoe where i dont feel the plate that much. Im looking to break 3:20 and comfort is key for me.
nice shoe, i'm not in the market though (at that price), but they look fun.
very well chosen words for Kiptum, Edd.
We must remember he has kids too. It’s really sad 😔
Wish they had connected that heel collar padding to help heel lift people. Also think they need to bring that weight down if they wanna market this as a top end marathon racer. LOVE the lateral side cutout instead of the medial side....the ratio of pronators to supinators is what 80-20 or 90-10 easily? Nice 1st try by Hoka, curious to see how they improve on the V2.
Thanks for the review.
May I ask you when will you review the New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite V4?
If a good deal comes up I might give them a whirl
Cool shoe my mate 😃
It looks like Hoka hired designer’s and engineers from other brands due to the way these have been explained in a few running shoe review channel’s. Thanks for the vid. Long live Kiptum.
They have shifted their focus for sure. Kiptum runs with us all. 👊
RIP KIPTUM. My heart still hurts for his family.
I already have Prime X Strung and Rebellion Pro both based off your recommendation. Both still have less than 100km each, is the Cielo that much better than either of them that I should consider buying it?
Great review Eddbud, I’m getting these (instead of A Pro 3 or Saucony Elite) what would you match it with?
Hoka Mach X, Saucony Endorphin speed 4 or Boston 12?
Keep up the great work and thanks for your replies over the years!!
Haven’t tried the Mach but many suggest it’s ideal as a companion shoe
Nice Review 👌. I’m thinking of using mine for Manchester Marathon this year. Would you run a marathon in them.
I see no reason why not
Thanks for the review, sounds really interesting. I love the prime x and ran last marathon in them but I am looking for something new like this New Hoka or Saucony Elite pro (I can get 20% discount so it’s doable). What do you think?
The Saucony end elite is a smasher. It’s all out pace. Though just got the pro 4! It has some hg foam in there and a more responsive ride
Hey Ed, any plans to check out the mizuno rebellion flash 2?
May check it soon
Edd I’m aware this video is somewhat older but I love your content , and have watched this one more than once , but since it seems you and I are the only two runners that particularly liked the tempo next % please tell me from all the shoes you have reviewed over the past since then which one if at all comes close besides the alphafly itself.
Puma fast-r nitro elite v1 or 2. Closest thing out there really to the tempo
I’ve been trying to get my hands on some Superblasts, but can’t be doing with those cherry red ones!
They are like a strawberry lozenge.
Great video, im liking the look of these, but not in my size, 12/12.5 😢 dont know why, not seen them, even on release?
Yes! First to notice the weird sizing limits on these. There was no 11.5 at all
@EDDBUD I was tempted to try an 11.5 I've found some on Cotswold site, but a full size down from the rocket x2 I'm worried will be too small, plus I have no discount code for them 😅 🙈
Absolutely love them be 1 for the better weather there edd definitely use them on my road races I was shocked few nights to hear the loss off Kelvin kiptum He such legend he far to young he never be forgotten 🙂🏃🏃
These could be good for races no problem. The weight isn’t that noticeable early on. Later in a marathon is anyone’s guess
Tried on a pair of these in store and they really throw you forward! Wondering how they would go for marathon distance. Was between these and endorphin pro 4 in the shop, the Sauconys felt tame in comparison
Will you be doing a 100 mile review of these?
Yes racking up the miles
Hi Edd, if you were attempting a marathon PB at London would you run in the Cielo 1 or the Metaspeed Sky Paris
A pb? There’s almost 100g deference between these. On foot the Metaspeed is the more comfortable. The Cielo shapes your stride somewhat and I think it’s a good long run option / recovery too. But the asics is next level
Hey Ed, my taste in shoes seems to match yours closely. I'm targeting a 3:30 marathon later this year and have just picked up some puma deviates for daily training. I'm trying to find a shoe for the marathon that matches my target pace, being a bit slower than the what I think a lot of these super shoes are made for. What would your top choice be for running a marathon at that sort of pace? Seems like the cielo could suit well. Thanks
The Cielo or the primex strung if you ankles are strong
Supination - rhymes with Soup In Nation
Double lacing it apparently fixes lace issues.
I got a pair from FB market place for $120 cad only got 70 km on them, like brand new, the best $ spent on shoes so far.
That’s great value!
Haven't been able to run it cos of snow and ice, but on the treadmill it's about like a runaway train going downhill..a little scary cos it wants to go and go fast..can't wait to let her rip on some fast 1/2s..
I have just bought a treadmill to help get some more miles in! Will give them a go on that surface too soon.
£250 a joke!!
My fave shoe is the Mach..I hope they can go back to what they once had..cheers bud..shoes can have too much or too little..it’s a balance..nothing worse than running with boats..or running nearly barefoot! Cheers bud
RIP kiptum what a runner..would have broke 2 hrs..what a man
It’s quite the price. At 220 I think it would be more of a hit
Is it the same foam used in the rocket x2? By the way the outsole on the heel looks like they’ve copied the Endorphin elite.
Yes it looks like both shoes have two different versions of the foam from hokas info
Looks like the jewelers screwdriver is gonna be needed for that outsole 😁
Yeah or even the hoover. 🤣👍🏼
@@EDDBUD 🤣
Hmm. Maybe this is the shoe for over-pronators? I will go and try it on. It cost 300 Pounds here in Norway!!!
Max price. Not sure what they are doing there!
Good morning. Nike Alphafly+ Puma Fast R Nitro elite=Hoka cielo x1. Interesting your description. Kelvin Kiptum=RIP. Like to EDDBUD. Cheers.
Thanks for tuning in 👍🏼
For those that have slight overpronation concerns and have run in it, how does the Cielo X1 go considering the cutout on the outsole is on the lateral side, would i be correct in thinking it pushes you more lateral than medial, thus in turn being a bit of a savior for those who overpronate?
Thanks
The winged plate does quite a bit to stabilise things too
@@EDDBUDthanks mate
Really want this shoe for my marathon april since its impossible to get hold off Alfafly 3. Only thing putting me off is the weight seems heavy for a 250quid shoe like.
Yes the weight is the main issue here really. Though for the mid to tail runners it’s no major issue. I think that’s what they are going for here
This is definitely my current top choice for an April marathon, and I had the Alphafly 3 (which I sold to a friend when they caused major rubbing issues for me). The upper is just so much more comfortable and the rocker is amazing for longer efforts. I personally don't find the weight to be a big issue, I'm not exactly running at elite level speeds for 26 miles! For reference, I wear a US 12 and am six feet tall with pretty narrow feet and somewhat high arches. I would wear the Cielo X1 for every run if I could.
@@SuboptimalRunner thanks for that mate. Im same size as you. Am going for sub 3 i hope🙏🏻
@@muzzer8869 Good luck!
❤
Would the stack make this shoe illegal for racing in certain sizes or does it change depending on shoe size?
It changes on shoe size
Laces shouldn't be a big deal. I have had to change the laces in the Peg 39, Novablast 3 and FuelCell Rebel v3.
Appreciate the respect to Kelvin Kiptum.
Enjoy every run as if it’s your last
Sure thing!@@EDDBUD
Good Morning
Morning
Is the insole removable?
Yes it comes out easily.
cant be bad if a lot of comparisons to the PrimeX strung, have 500k in mine, in any other shoe that'd be 250k, but every time I dig out the PXS I start plodding along and "oh yeah...this shoe is awesome" and run twice as far as I'd planned to.
Yes that’s the issue with that shoe! Easy 3 turns into 10 miles. “Sorry love I missed my turn around point!” 🤣👍🏼
My lad is called Fergus. Top name
@@EDDBUD Aye, I was named after the King of the Picts, you did say in a previous video you had feeling of kinship when you visit Scotland, Edd... ;-)
Literally the heaviest 40mm race legal shoe. I am very highly likely to pass over this one although there are a few good design ideas implemented by this shoe. They need to lose a lot of weight in the next version, or they could position it as a training shoe but then they would need to add a bit more durable rubber under the foam like Prime X. I have Prime X Strung OG so Cielo X1 is a pass for me.
RIP Kiptum. He made a big impact to the sport in such a short time. We can only speculate what more he could have done 😥
Not everyone wants a soft squash though. Not that this one isn’t that. It’s a primex competitor if anything
RIP Kelvin Kiptum
🎉
🥉
@@EDDBUD happy with 3rd 🥉 🤣. Didn’t think I get it in time. Will watch later as I’m at work tho 🤣
Do you have a teleprompter?
Nope
RIP Kelvin. His immense talent now leaves a big "what if?" for me as I really believe he can break the 2-hour barrier. Tragic news. 😢
Going back to the shoe, does it feel durable for you? I mean "race day" shoes tend to have questionable durability. Based on the observations and different opinions on TH-cam, this shoe might be more of a trainer rather than a racer.
Yes what it is the phrase here. We will never know 😔
Hoka have got a sense of humour! To be honest, I think I'd try these out but only when in a sale. Kiptum had so much to give and it was a given he would have gone sub-2.00 in an official marathon, so very sad.
I agree I think he genuinely could have done it. 😔
Not first
But tuning in is appreciated
Hi
🥈
10050 Cielo Drive. Probably worth a Google.
Nothing to do with this shoe
@EDDBUD Exactly. Which is why Hoka should have looked into it first!
Afraid Hoka lost me at the one one Carbon X. Terrible running shoe. Very spongy and not very fast.
This is nothing like that old shoe
Not liking the colour..
It’s certainly an acquired taste.
Love the colour! 😍
No, no, no!
The shoe is way too ugly!
I don’t care much for the looks of a shoe. Does it work? Yes it does
