Amazing Lawn Mower Motorized Bike (Part 2/2)

  • Well boys and gals we finished the lawn mower motorized bike. This motorbike functions using an angle drive to convert the vertical rotation of the lawn Mower engine into a horizontal output to drive the rear wheel. I took it off road and despite needing a new tail-bone it functioned very nicely, not quite a dirt bike but oh well. Anyway If you like this project be sure to check out the channel for more motorized bikes, dirt bikes, go karts, gas scooters, motorcycles, quads, atv's and a crap ton of other stuff!

    Why don’t you use a small centrifugal clutch? It would simplify the build and your engine wouldn’t stall out all the time.

    Nice!! Find a way to add a heavyer flywheel and it will solve your stall/torque issue. In the lawnmower, the blade acts as a flywheel gathering inertia overcoming stall.

    • @MrThunderCunt

      Yes. Also, a set of rings. But, a Briggs 3 hp will fit that fine. They are very heavy.

    I appreciate your all your hard work and effort and engineering skills great job!
    Back in 1968 I built my first motorbike with a horizontal shaft 4 horsepower engine . I used 12 inches of angle iron and 2 u bolts to bolt to the frame. Centrifical belt clutch and one wizard rear pulley on a 26in wheel.
    No welder, no cutting the bicycle frame ,no high-tech tools just me in the 6th grade building a motorbike that went about 35 to 40 miles an hour.
    Sometimes a simpler design is less complicated and less breakdowns.

    • @Freebyrd1991
      @Freebyrd1991 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's great for a 6th grader! I was just a flashlight holder for my dad, didn't actually get to use any of the tools. Stuff didn't interest me till after I stopped talking to him. He made me feel disinterested in understanding or working on things bc it was never fun. Now I love building and watching stuff like this

    Yes! A plasma cutter table, & a tubing bender, plus a nicely laid out tool & compressor area, pure genious, money well spent. I loved the nice, clean gusset assembly under the engine. 2 suggestions, go back to the bigger belt driven pulley & find a carb with an idle adjustment you can open up to richen the transition from idle to midrange. That single speed carb just cannot handle the transition, it is simply to lean. Hack on a little carb from GoPowrrSports, like a mikuni clone. Get their suggestions. That very shaft has much fiber manners in it's future! Again, welcome back Sir 😎. Your quality of work has greatly improved & you're still entertaining, congrats!

    Your mower engine has an aluminum flywheel due to the blade being the centrifugal force for three of the four strokes. You need a cast iron flywheel from a horizontal shaft motor or make a weight to attach to the crank to take the place of the cast iron.

    TH-cam recommended this. Glad it did! Nice build! 👍 For taking some junker parts and throwing them together, it came out really well! Taking pictures and slapping them into fusion 360 definitely helps. It's my go to method. If you have a ruler in the picture, you can also "calibrate" (scale) the picture to that ruler and then just draw up what you want and it'll be to the correct scale. Just make sure the camera perpendicular to the surface. Got yourself another subscriber! 😎

    Lawnmowers have a blade that is mounted directly to their PTO this means they can be made with lighter flywheels. If you changed the flywheel out from one off of a pressure washer that was weighted it would probably function better.

    • @db3501
      @db3501 ปีที่แล้ว

      Be advised that your vertical shaft engine probably has no ball bearings... you could add a 6205 bearing or similar to the mounting flange if you want to :)
      Also the clutch setup is not ideal for a single cylinder engine. In case you want to improve the take-off behavior, you need to increase flywheel mass. So the engine doesn't cut out that easily when the clutch is engaged. Greetings and good tinkering.

  • @kurtkimmerly5898

    Oliver I love your stuff, but when I saw part 1 of this video I expected you'd have problems due to mower engines having MUCH lighter flywheels (mower blade provides the inertia)
    Looks like you do have a bit of a problem with getting rolling when you first let in the clutch (in the video where you say "not enough torque")
    Might be able to get an iron flywheel from a vertical shaft Briggs pressure washer or similar.

    • @OliverMotorized
      @OliverMotorized  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are right! The lack of a flywheel means there is less momentum to help sustain engine rotation while depressing the clutch. Hmm... maybe I'll rob one off a Briggs like you said.
      Thanks for the insight Kurt!

    You’re like my spirit brother! Lol. I do the same goofy stuff! If you haven’t figured it out yet, the vert Briggs has an aluminum lightweight flywheel that doesn’t do well without the weight of a rotating mower blade. This is likely contributing to the stalling. The iron flywheel from literally any 2hp to 4hp horizontal Briggs will fit right in without any changes and will solve much of your issues. Keep doing what you’re doing!

    That thing could use some rings, man. Also, take the head off, use a wire wheel to clean up the carbon for everything, put a new spark plug in it, and run it. You'll end up doing it anyway If you rebuild it. Trust me, you won't regret it. It wont die when you take off, either.

    • @OliverMotorized
      @OliverMotorized  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sure it needs all those things, but also I agree with many other comments that the lack of a flywheel is what was causing it to stall so easily

      @MrThunderCunt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OliverMotorized yes. I think I replied to someone's comment on that subject. I said that a flywheel off a Briggs and Stratton 2 hp or 3hp would work great. They are about twice as heavy.

    If you add a small flywheel to the out put shaft, it might help on the take off

    I have a Molkt 26mm flat slide carb from Amazon. $30. In my vertical shaft motorcycle and it makes a massive performance difference.

    I wouldn’t do a predator 212cc horizontal shaft I would imagine it would’ve been way easier if f a build and maybe better performance as well but it’s pretty cool to see a bike that’s ran by a vertical shaft

      yeah I've made plenty of bikes with predators, just doing something outa-the-box. Thanks.

    On a vertical shaft engine designed for a lawn mower, the spinning blade acts as a flywheel so without it, there is little to no inertia built up untill the engine is at higher revs so this is why the bike keeps stalling when the belt is initially engaged.

    Hey do you ever have issues with tires because of the extra load? I’m looking to build a motor bike using a riding mower engine and wanted to know if stock rims and tires would hold up, thank you for reading.

    • @OliverMotorized
      @OliverMotorized  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jacob, I’ve had issues with other bikes where the spokes pop out and the axle bent but that was with a 125cc dirt bike engine so it had a lot of torque compared to this bike. But if you are using a riding mower engine I would say you would want beefier wheels and axles for sure.

    What is that transfer case you're using. That changes it from horizontal shift to vertical shaft?
