I've been watching this series for a couple weeks. It's giving me some confidence to finally tear into my engine and figure out what's wrong with it.
Just get the field service manual and start reading it now. All of the instructions are there. it's really thick and seems overwhelming at first but actually a lot of information is repeated over and over again.
The first couple of chapters are really the important ones. There's a group on Facebook called om617 swap. You can download the field service manual from the file section if you join that group.
This is an awesome series. I'd love to rebuild my 300SD.
Glad you liked it hopefully everything you need to do is covered in these videos
@@woodsandbarclay It is. Now I just need the shop space. But for now, I'll just replace what I can on it to keep it going like the injectors and about a dozen gaskets. W116 is my favorite Mercedes Chassis.
Your big helper is laying on the floor there lol.
Hahahaha
First and foremost, thank you for the uploads, great info.
Mid rebuild myself - quick question, how do you ensure the crank and cam are "timed" before locking them together with the chain? If they're out of sync wouldn't the valves open in a compression stroke and meet the pistons??? Didn't make any marks on disassembly...
You can actually get it 180° out of timing. There are little dots on the cam gear that need to be lined up I actually have a video of it somewhere in the rebuild series. Your crank also needs to be at top dead center on piston one on the compression stroke.
Kept following your rebuild videos and found it shortly after, thanks again! I'll hand crank her slowly and hope for no contact, 50 / 50 shot in the dark it seems. I'll go ahead and order a second chain link now knowing my luck..
👍👍👍
Thank you
Can you please show us what manual you are using to rebuild your 0m617. I would love to get one of those before its to late! Great work love the vids.
Join the "om617 swaps" group on Facebook. The manual is available for download in the Files section once you join the group.
Hold on wait a damn minute is that a 1970 - 1973 Pontiac Trans Am 455 ho or SD in your shop? That is my all-time favorite muscle car
It sure is it's an original 1970 RAM Air III 4 speed :) I actually just sold it. The blue car is a 1970 Firebird that I converted into a race car for the optima battery search for the ultimate Street Car series.
@@woodsandbarclay too funny! I have a 1985 300D Mercedes, I'm getting ready to pull the head off of. Expecting a blown head gasket or cracked head. While I was watching your video and lo and behold I see the Trans Am in the background! . I almost bought a 1968 Z28 with a 396 at Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach last year but my heart lies with the Trans Am.
This is so weird. Wife and I have an 11 year old Beagle here that we’ve owned since she was 4 months old. Her name is Rollo !
Hahahaha
Send me a link for piston rings please! Just pulled mine apart!
I have a set I can sell you for 150 bucks. NOS original Mercedes rings. just send the payment to my PayPal and include a message with your address and I will ship them out tomorrow. jtwoods4@gmail.com
Throw in about ten bucks for shipping so let's call it $160. these are original Mercedes much better than the aftermarket stuff available today. That's what I used in my engine.
If you were to buy the ring set that I have brand-new it would cost you over $500. Pelican parts sells them brand new.
