    Nice work! You might be the only guy who's taken a om617 apart like that and put it up on youtube.

      You think so? We honestly haven't checked. That would be awesome though!

    Looking good that engine, from a time the engineers had more to say than the financial people at mercedes. Keep up the awesome work. Looking forward to the next episode 👍

    I'm no diesel mechanic but with new rings you usually want to hone the cylinders so the rings can break in.

    • @jonasfreitag
      @jonasfreitag  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll ask my brothers reasoning behind that and get back to you.

    • @volkerdiesel

      +1 ; If you don´t re-hone the cylinder walls, the new piston rings can grind away the rest of the old hone surface. Result can be high oil consumption and/or piston seizure (Kolbenfresser)

      I'm a diesel engineer from 40 years back and have just rebuilt fully an OM621 . I kind of skipped through your video so apologies if I may have missed it.
      I didn't see any honing or glaze busting prior to fitting new rings. I didn't see you check ring gaps. I didn't see you measure ring groove particularly top ring in groove. Piston wear in bore. I didn't see you check valve guide wear...infact I didn't see a vernier or set of feeler gauges or a micrometer.
      The rings cannot bed in on a well glazed bore. I'm still learning too every day and it's exciting to put up your video but you perhaps need to do more research and read the om617 workshop manual to avoid these basic errors and ommisions.
      Cheers.

    this was your opportunity to balance the rotating assembly MB has a 12gr + or - tolerance.I built my om616 with .1gr of tolerance in the pistons and crank. My pistons were good too but might as well since you have the thing apart. cause I'm never going o rebuild it again well maybe after another 300 k miles.

    I'm surprise617d you didn't buy and install an OM605turbo instead of that heavy lump of OM617.

    • @jonasfreitag
      @jonasfreitag  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the OM606 would have been our first choice for a swap. But this engine seems to be in good shape and we're kinda curious to find out what it can do with the STT Turbo Kit and some tuning of the diesel pump.

      An aftermarket 617a

    • @jonasfreitag

      Technically an aftermarket 617la with the small intercooler.

      @@jonasfreitag a big improvement on the 88bhp of the naturally aspirated engine, circa 125?

    • @jonasfreitag
      @jonasfreitag  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theirabouts yes. We're hoping that with the right settings on the dieselpump we'll be able to make some good usable power in the 120-130hp range. One issue is going to be keeping the heat in the rather small engine bay down, so we're thinking on going for a bigger intercooler down low underneath the radiator.

    Hi guys
    ¿Is Thor getting an original fuel tank(s) or an aftermarket…?

    • @jonasfreitag
      @jonasfreitag  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original one has a fair amount of rust holes at the top, so we haven't had it powdercoated yet. Might be worth going for a plastic aftermarket one. What do you think?

    • @berniereyes1956
      @berniereyes1956 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi guys 👋
      I’m no expert on the matter of fuel tanks, but I did have the opportunity to do major surgery on my w460/280ge. After washing and cleaning the ¡#!% out of the tank I opened it with a saw-zall. The bottom part of the tank was as smooth as a baby’s bottom. The upper part of the tank, however was a whole different story. Because of its “saddle-like” design the condensation apparently finds its way to the top (getting TRAPPED in those three upper pockets) gradually wreaking massive damage. And that is how Thor got his CANCER too!!!
      I thought of many ways of remedying my situation: a friend suggested an interior bladder…another swears by a steel made tanks and I, in my infinite wisdom thought of using a product called POR15 used in maritime works. I purchased the kit. Now I would have to cut and reopen the tank, clean it again and apply the 3-step process. It all sounded good until I thought of rewelding the tank closed, wherein I would probably most surely ruin whatever interior coating I had just applied…. I just had Chinese and my fortune cookie read:
      ¡Confucius say…what is the stomach’s importance to a good digestive system and overall health?😂 so…
      ¡I VOTE YES 👍🏼 GET THOR A NEW PLASTIC TANK !!

    Isn’t this the same motor that enabled ‘Otto’ to travel 900,000 km in 26 years? Not even Mercedes makes them like that any more. I’d be wary the replacement parts were not as good as the originals.

    • @jonasfreitag
      @jonasfreitag  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sure is, only that ours has a STT turbo kit installed.
