    In this video I finally got around to the valve adjustment on our 300SD.
    I made a gnarly looking wrench for the job instead of buying one. We also
    did a fair amount of cleaning on the valve cover and control rod assembly.
    Comically the popping noise you here in the higher speed video segments
    was my wife playing basketball outside. ha ha...
    Errata:
    In the video I incorrectly state that the valve cover nut torque is 10nm. It is 15 nm according to the factory service manual.

    I picked up one of these cars recently. Pretty niche shape. Your channel is already saving me tons of headache. Even same year as mine. Perfect videos for fixing up the little things wrong with her.
    Ain't going for a restoration or anything, but it'll be nice for everything to actually work correctly eventually.

    You mean I don’t have to buy the angled 14mm wrench for $100? Lol . And I know I can’t be the only one screaming “Paint the cover!” “Paint the cover!” Very nice video man. Very helpful.

      Thanks ! I'm sure the official tools would be much easier to use. No denying that. For a beginner wrench turner that would be the correct way to go. However I was able to knock out this ugly wrench in about 10 minutes using a cheaper Harbor Freight tool.

    I saw 15 views but no likes or dislikes when I saw this. Watching you do this is much more fun than watching paint dry. Lol
    I always took mine in and let a mechanic do the adjustments. Now that I know how to do it I don't have a car to practice on. Oh well.
    I assume you need a completely cold engine and the clearances are to allow for expansion when the engine gets hot.
    I have heard the clips that hold that cam oiler tube are a problem on some engines. If I remember right they used plastic clips on some and they would break and the tube would come off. Disaster waiting to happen. They're not plastic on yours are they? What's next?
    Still 15 views, 2 other comments when I fired mine off and mine is the only like. What's up with that people?

    • @ImpalamansGarage

      I didn't see any plastic under that valve cover, but then again everything was covered in oil. :)

    What does the service manual say on when a valve adjustment should be done?

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I edited the description with a link to the FSM site where you can download the valve adjustment procedure. The procedure does not indicate the interval but everything I've read on line indicates that it should be done every 12,000 miles.

    • @ImpalamansGarage

      No. I don't turn the engine long enough for that to happen. Each bump is only a small fraction of a revolution.

    Hi I just bought a 300SD and the engine has seen better days so I was thinking about rebuilding it and was thinking of turning it into more of a performance car. I was curious how much horsepower could I max out while keeping it reliable and safe. With all performance parts going into the engine what would be a reasonable amount of power? I am trying to get around 300-400 hp out of the engine and wanted to know if that was possible?

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly I'd shoot for 200. If you were able to obtain 300 to 400 hp from an OM617, you'd blow out the transmission and differential when you put your foot into it. The first place I would start with regards to thinking about serious power for these engines is www.doomsdaydiesel.net/. He knows a lot more about hopping up these motors than I ever will.

    If the locking nut won’t budge do I force it?

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have not done this before my advice would be to use two wrenches if you are not already. (Preferably flare nut style wrenches) Do not try it with a regular open-end wrench. Remember that to loosen the setup, turn the top nut counter clockwise while simultaneously turning the bottom nut clockwise. Using two wrenches is preferred to break things free. Once they are free, the adjustment is straight forward.
