  • We took a trip to Cedar Rapids and Waterloo. We visited the CRANDIC in Cedar Rapids and the Iowa Northern in Waterloo (and filmed a few Union Pacific trains on way there). Our goal was to see the IANR before its purchase by CN is approved by the STB and it becomes a relic of the past just like the EJ&E and Illinois Central. Goal accomplished.

Great video. The bridge across the Cedar River in Waterloo is actually old CNW. It was a part of the line that came up along highway 63 from Marshalltown, IA. The Rock went through downtown Waterloo along John Deere by the Cedar Falls Utility plant and street ran in Cedar Falls before cross the Illinois Central. The CNW track went North to Oelwein, IA. That’s why there is a UP switcher just North of the bridge.

Interesting video. TH-camr “Red’s Iowa Train Videos” just released a video on the former CNW (now UP) alignment through Cedar Rapids. Originally the CNW went into town but the city fathers were concerned about too much rail traffic in Cedar Rapids so they paid for the bypass including a new bridge over the Cedar River (current alignment). The UP local that you caught was taking loads to the Quaker Oats plant, the only customer on that spur which is part of the original CNW route through town.
I thought that the Iowa Northern’s paint scheme looks like the heritage Canadian Pacific scheme-interesting to me anyway.

Hopefully big class 1 CN taking over the lines doesn't start imposing 75 car unit trains, raising shipping rates, and ultimately mothballing any of the lines. Really worried about what this could mean for the trackage that IANR is operating for NCIRC from Belmond to Forest City.

I didn't even realize that line was operated by IANR. I'm always concerned and saddened when a smaller railroad gets gobbled up by a class 1.

Do you know about the IANR operations in Manly, IA?
