  • Why am I buying this? How often do we ask ourselves this question before we make a purchase, and is it the only one that will help us make a more considered purchase? From fit, to comfort, to values, we run through all the questions we ask ourselves before making a purchase. Hopefully this discussion helps the next time you're thinking about buying something!

Good stuff. Because I'm a bit hard to fit (aren't most of us?) I find I'm too likely to buy things that meet other criteria well, but don't fit quite right. Then I end up either trying to alter them (sometimes successfully) or just feeling disappointed that I have this THING that doesn't fit well. I've recently decided nope, I'm not doing that anymore, unless all something needs is to be hemmed.

Thank you for mentioning the sensory aspect. I’m autistic, and my skin is very sensitive, not just to wool and cashmere but also to labels inside clothing, scratchy lace, etc. I also have visual disturbance from high contrast geometric patterns like houndstooth. So a crucial question for me is “Can I tolerate this?”
I love soft cotton in bluey greens 🙂

The main thing I think before buying something is “is this me?” You know when you know!! Yr certain. If you hv to ask “should I buy this”? Its a no. Great podcast girls and cute jacket Signe👍👍looks great with yr hair

For me, if I like something it's the fabric first, if it's a polyester piece then it's immediately no even if I like it. Not just for environmental reasons, but also the sensory part. I always get sweaty and smelly in polyester.
Then it's the "do I have somewhere to wear this piece to" part.
And the last one is the "do I have more pieces in my wardrobe that I can combine the piece with".
Loved the podcast as always, ladies ❤

Hey beautiful ladies, just wanted to express my gratitude for another fantastic episode! Your discussions always resonate with me. It's so important to ask the right questions before diving into new purchases.
Your talk about creativity in fashion really hit home for me. I've experienced a similar shift in my own habits over time. As a fashion TH-camr collaborating with brands, through my channel I've discovered fulfillment in styling and expressing my personal style, which has (almost) completely "cured" my occasional need to shop for useless things.
Thanks for consistently delivering thought-provoking content and inspiring us to approach fashion with mindfulness. Can't wait for the next episode!

I also love that you are speaking to the evolution of your three / four words. We get the privilege of seeing the shift in action and the comfort of knowing that it's okay if things change. Thanks to all of you for your honest and transparent conversations (on your individual channels and this fantastic podcast) ❤❤❤

Hi Ladies, here is a sustainable challenge suggestion with Mother's Day approaching soon! Please select a favorite picture of your mother or an important mother figure in your life, and recreate the look according to your interpretation! Rules:It has to be a picture from at least 5 years ago, preferably 10 or more years ago, you can only use items from your own closet to reinterpret the look. Please encourage your community to post their own inspo photos of their mothers, and how they recreated the look on social media platforms. Hopefully, it will spread the word about sustainable shopping, by using the elements of style, while honoring our mothers in the process!

Really good discussion. I've used a wish list for years but it's a lot shorter and more focused than it was 10 years ago.
Good to touch on compromise- a lot of podcasts suggest you should never compromise but realistically some items are a need (relatively). I'd say don't compromise if you already have something good enough

I so much love your podcasts, they motivate me to be more creative with my wardrobe and more critical and slow ❤ with my shopping 🛍️ I am now on my last day of April No Buy and it was a lot easier then I expected. This month I still have continued to add items to my wish list, but the interesting thing is that by the end of the month I have really narrowed down my wish list to the items I really want and need vs a lot of those that were just impulsively added to my list 🤗

Totally agree with the fit-first approach! I too have made mistakes buying something second-hand that I *thought* fit but in reality, it is perhaps a bit too snug around the waist or a shoe that is a bit too big around the heel area.
Measurements help a lot but I'm learning that if I have any twinge of 'will it fit /will it work' then I can't pull the trigger or I'm risking buyer's remorse if it doesn't work.

What a great video! You touched on many feelings and experiences that have arisen when I have been thrifting. Especially when Alyssa talked about the shopping stalking. I have been on both sides of that scenario. One thing that I have done in the past which has landed me in trouble is thrift shopping with a specific type of garment in mind which is good, but then buying that in many different colors. I did this with linen or linen blend button up shirts one year and now can open a store. I also shopped these non thrifted. They are still a weakness for me.

Alyssa mentioned synthetics as some of the most hard working pieces in her closet. I'd be interested in hearing more about when you all think synthetics might be an important aspect to incorporate and why.

Eclectic comfortable and playful…. Still a work in progress Eclectic because I’m a Gemini and don’t have a specific style one day I’m girlie, the next edgy, the next leaning on sporty. Always has to be comfortable though. Playful is because my outfits are always kind of fun. I am trying to downsize my wardrobe for retirement so each season I’m letting things go if not worn and comfortable is the most important. Even though I thrift most of my clothes I am more picky these days. Quality fabrics good fit and comfortable plus have to be playful and able to work for many outfits

I have a hard time living somewhere where there isn't great in person shopping and the thrift stores are also not great. So I end up spending hours searching for clothing online and I end up returning a lot! I'm also having a hard time shopping online because it feels like my style doesn't align with the current trends (floral, colorful, relaxed).

  • @evalindell2757

I always start with producer. Certain brands/ shops I do not look at. Like H&M and Zara (no fast fashion) and then too expensive brands as well. If I can’t afford it no reson to fall in love with it! Then I look for what I need and gaps in my wardrobe. With that whishlist I look for things that I loove! It has to fit, into my wardrobe and with my body. If it doesn’t fit no point in buying. Unless I know my seamstress can alter what is wrong. I think it is a complicated question because if you don’t love it you are not going to wear it but if you can’t afford it you can’t even buy it. I think though that one of the things I have been inspired with from you is the: go out and buy. Do not buy online. As the risk for me is if I have bought something on line even if it doesn’t fit very well I will still keep it because of the hassel of returning it. So moving forward I buy quality, that fits very well. Secondhand or small independent producers with an ecofriendly mindset that I have to buy in person. For me that makes overshopping extremely difficult. As I hate shopping in person! 😬 Love your conversations they always make me think, reflect on what is important to me! ❤️

Thank you again for another insightful show! I am also trying to shop more in person however the place I like to shop second hand is not size inclusive so I rarely find anything on my wish list even when looking at sizes above and below my typical size. In the end I end up shopping online either secondhand or new if it's something I know I will wear a lot. Love listening to you and hoping you can all record a show IRL soon!

    Excellent discussion as usual ❤
I’ve been shopping with a wish list for 10 years. It’s helped keep me focused as you say, and the list is modified as time goes on because sometimes I change my mind but I also discover I maybe had a piece on the list that was a fantasy piece versus a real me piece. I didn’t “recognize” it as a fantasy piece until I heard the term used by you lovelies!
In February I went to Simon’s in West Edmonton Mall, hadn’t been there in over a year. Found a a beautiful long skirt with smocking that was exactly what I was looking for but it was $100 😅 So I took a pic, went home, thought about it, and 3 weeks later went back. There were only 2 left in my size 😮 but I’m so happy I weighted the decision. It can be worn as a long skirt and a dress when pulled up- I’m 5’9”. I’m so excited to start wearing it when the weather warms a bit. At $100 it was an investment BUT the fabric, fabrication, and design is timeless, I know I will have it for many years and many wears. Thank you for encouraging us all to be mindful and “choosey” about what we let into our closet ❤

Because of you, beautiful ladies , I have made myself a wish list and, while thrifting, stuck to a lot of these suggestions! I loved your Copenhagen thrifting video.
My question for you is how do I know what the perfect "oversized" is??
I am 5' 9" and love button downs and blazers, however, unsure about that comfy fit I want! 😊

Great podcast. A few years ago I wondered why I ended up with just "good enough" items and for ease decided on my 6F screen. Did it meet my "fashion" ie style, and was it modern (one of my style words as I got over 50), did it fit my body well, did it flatter ie proportions I like and suit my body shape, did it feel good ie comfort, not itchy or rough, was it functional ie fit my purpose, and finally, did it come within my available finances. Similar to all the points you raised!

I laughed when you were discussing wanting something at a thrift store because someone else is interested or looking at buying it. I will bypass something on a rack and if someone comes along behind me and picks up the item to examine it, it suddenly has new appeal. 😅

I absolutely do -most designers and brands who have ethical supply chains are really transparent - you can see from their websites what actual commitments and standards they have. If its not clear then for me it's a hard no.

  • @autumnellingham5712
    @autumnellingham5712 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

So glad you mentioned sensory, it’s something I am realising affects how much I wear something, it’s going to be one of my top considerations going forward. I have realised I don’t always like things under my arms this drives some of my purchases and style to a bat wing design and some oversized garmens.
I use a wish list, it’s helped a lot with o using on what I really want and helps me try out options before often going back to the original of what I wanted at some point after some thought, like the dupe thing. I totally get that done it so much I would rather save or invest in the real thing.
I love that you touched on quality with this. It’s always been such a big thing for me to the point my friends would criticise me for spending more on items… however most of them are still in my wadrobe today. (I’m not sure if with a few items this is because they cost so much or because I love them, but I can definatly say 90% of this stuff I still love). Now people are less critical as they understand that fast fashion is not my thing and they understand my environment view on this.
Agh I’m such a couch shopper when the family are watching something I’m not into! Need to work on this! lol 😊
Well done another thought provoking discussion.
