No jeans. No pants. Made that decision 12 years ago and have never looked back. They all looked terrible on me and every single pair was totally uncomfortable in one way or another. I wasted so much money on them. Best decision ever to just stop purchasing pants. Great video! Love listening to you three.

Love this! One thing that doesn't work for me is blazers. I want to love them, and I love them on others, but when I wear one I feel like a fraud. Maybe because it's hard to get a good fit (5'2" with a bigger chest). Also I'm retired and lead a very simple life, but I still like the spiffiness of a jacket. A "lady jacket" or slim long cardigan make me feel a bit polished, but still like me, so I'm going for those instead.

    • @marvawiebe4364
      @marvawiebe4364 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I had a hard time with blazers, too, until I started pairing them with really casual outfits, like jeans and a denim shirt or jeans and a sweater. With a button down, they just seemed too dressed up for my casual, retired lifestyle.

I started a "no go" list 2 or 3 years ago. It's really helpful. Sometimes, it's easier to narrow down what you DON'T like than what you do like. My deal breakers include florals, girly details, bottoms without pockets, wrong color palette, wrong fit, clingy/tight fitting garments, floppy hats.

Gosh, for me its basics like neutral color t-shirts or merino wool sweaters. Which seems interesting because the video and the comments are mostly about the kinds of items you buy but never wear. The basics seem to multiply exponentially in my closet. I think its because I DO wear them that I always justify buying them. So I have a note to self when I go shopping and those items are a red flag at the moment. This was a great video, very interesting!

I love listening to you three! I have just made my DO NOT BUY list and it begins with: Don't buy anything that is at odds with my values. That includes buying fast fashion, anything that's not sustainably made and animal leather. I also listed items that are not immediately comfortable. My style words are laid back, sporty and edgy. Yes, I wear track/yoga pants with motorcycle boots and a cropped blazer and feel myself! I appreciate that you are doing this podcast! It's always good to think about what we're buying rather than aimlessly shopping.

Colours that are not in my palette, items for my fantasy self/ lifestyle, long, loose, frilly, lacy, or overly detailed tops, mid to low rise bottoms... it's actually an extensive list, but I don't really write it down because if I focus on my colours, proportions/uniform and think about my actual lifestyle, then I find it pretty easy to stay in my lane while still being creative, edgy, and innovative.

On my do not buy list there is the color black because for some reason I don't like wearing black. Floral or big prints, because I feel frumpy with them, V-neck t-shirts because I realized I prefer round necks, red or orange tops make my face look red. Shoes with heels, I will not wear them even on special occasions.

On my No Buy - nothing see-through or sheer. Even if I wear a full bodysuit I don't feel comfortable. Sheer sleeves are an exception but not a whole dress or shirt. Also I don't like to wear t-shirts with words on them. Pretty specific but I've purchased and decluttered a few of these now. The No Buy list has been very helpful. I've also implemented the Wish List and Wait list and that is making my shopping trips more like a treasure hunt and less about what I think I can't live without that day - and then regret.

I love your podcast and the topics are always on point. On my do not buy list is cheap/costume jewelry and high heels (3+ inches). I decided a few years ago while on journey to higher quality, sustainable fashion that I would stop buying jewelry meant to be tossed after some wear bc it oxidized. I would match rather own a smaller collection of quality jewelry, than a large collection of cheap jewelry. For the heels, this is more for lifestyle/comfort/health of my feet. Other items I’m challenging myself to buy less of is black clothing and synthetic fibers. I’ve decluttered a lot of my prints and tend to wear solids, however, if I find a print that speaks to me, I will buy it. I don’t believe in ruling things out completely, bc life is unpredictable and you have to leave room for that. Thanks for speaking to this point. ❤

Recent subscriber but I have followed each of you individually! Love this! I have a hard time streamlining my wardrobe for quite a unique reason. I have very curly hair and sometimes wear it straight. I find when I wear my curls, I am needing to be much more selective about necklines and slim fits to balance it out but when I’m wearing my hair blown out, it’s my time to play with button downs, boxy fits etc. Also, I love balance - it’s my preference
    so…
Curls no buys: more focus is on my big hair so no collared shirts, puffy sleeves, boxy tees or very tailored pieces
Blown out no buys: more focus is on my body shape, not buying out of my colours, unbalancing proportions pieces
I never hear people talk about this and it’s such a huge part of my wardrobe life 😂 hope this makes sense to some of the other curly girls out there! ❤ would love a dive on hair and clothes working together!

My biggest issue is that I love dressing for cooler weather, i.e. jeans; dress pants; jumpers; coats and my most loved item boots. BUT I now live in a hot climate! I don't enjoy dressing for spring/summer at all. The hot/warm weather lasts around 8 months of the year where I live in Australia! I didn't need a coat at all last winter. I have done a no buy for the past two months and am now looking at a no buy year because I simply do not need anything at all. Alyssa, I absolutely love that structured jacket from H&M, and you've had it a long time. Whenever you style it, chefs kiss. Great chat, ladies. I love these podcasts so much. Thank you ❤

It's so true that what you *don't* like is just as important, if not more so, than what you *do* like! I have a list of things I don't like, things I've never liked (and am very unlikely to change my mind on). On it are things like the color black, basic Oxford shirts, and tapered trousers. I also have a list of things I like on other people that I don't like on myself (like jewelry stacks--too fussy--and paper bag waist pants), which helps remind me these things never work when I see them and inevitably think, "Maybe I could make it work *this* time!" Along with my list of things I like, this helps me separate the wheat from the chaff and find things I know I'll love long-term.

I would love an episode on the relationship between our personal hygiene/care and wardrobe sustainability. 🙂 Maybe I’m the only person who experienced this, but I am always the most dissatisfied with my wardrobe when (1) my physical fitness is poor/im eating really poorly, (2) my hair is a disaster/I haven’t bothered to have a fresh face (with or without makeup). I’m sure there are other factors too but those are two fairly shared experiences among all of us. But when I take the time to physically look good, I feel like everything in my wardrobe is awesome and every outfit is a win. And literally nothing has changed but the level of care and attention I have given to the physical body the clothes will be going on. No new purchases, no urge to shop-just a well-maintained/groomed human canvas. Haha. Maybe this is just me? 😅

Yes. There are definitely styles and items I have on my list. Can relate to no floral, frills, puffs, tiers, bright busy patterns, spots, very feminine or 'sweet' items. No polyester. Others relate to my habit of buying items similar to what I already have so definitely no more black pants or button up shirts! Also can relate to then the struggle to try new styles. 😊

Just considering the question of taking time to get used to something new, may I recommend a u-tuber Kristen Cain, who is a ‘style and mindset coach’ - she has some fascinating ideas about how your brain responds including going into ‘safe mode’ for protection vs also developing inner style confidence. Also some interesting insights into perfectionism. Many thanks, looking forward to your next podcast, best, Susan (UK)

You three have completely helped me find my own style, and to see and feel fashion as I never have before. “No more bad outfit days” thank you 🙌🏻 At the shopping mall every clothing window had a khaki trench, every window seemed to look the same. I am glad that I wear a light gray/blue coat that suits my skin tone, and my denim jeans-I felt like I was owning my own taste and style. I will not buy camel color anything as it’s tones wash me out and never feels quite right- diving more into the color theories you are sharing as my hair color grays…so interesting, noticing undertones, saturation, and how color plays together makes such a difference .So much gratitude for each of you.

Hell yes to green, blue, black, jewel tones, white, cream, things that can be active but look more put together than leggings, sun hats, long sleeves that can be pushed up or rolled, wide leg, travel friendly, street sneakers, simple boots, one piece outfits such as rompers and dresses.

It's actually a great idea to make such a list! I fall into this trap on a regular basis when I think to myself that I can make something work this time and of course it doesn't happen!! 😂 Occasional wear is very dangerous for me. And colors! I feel best in neutrals and regret buying something colorful after a few weeks or months. I like it on others but not on myself with the exception of maybe two winter pieces that brighten my mood on dark days. 😅

I love shirts only as a layering piece. And I usually wear flowy satin or linen shirts. I wear them open over a tank top with jeans and converse or when it's cold I like to wear them with sweater or sweater vest, trousers, doc martens and leather jacket, kind of a preppy with a little edge. Maybe you did'n find your shirts uniform. I almost never wear a shirt as an only top because I feel uncomfortable.

DNB list- Florals, bell sleeves, asymmetrical hemlines, peplums, anything frilly or lacy, pants without pockets, blazers that don’t fit properly, 3/4 length sleeves, tunics, capris, trendy pieces, vegan leather footwear, sweaters with polyester and acrylic, denim with too much polyester or spandex, anything that looks like it came from a mature ladies store, 2 piece dresses (with jacket or bolero), scalloped edges, overtly cheap buttons, cheap accessories and jewelry. Such a Good podcast, thank you all. For me, no-buys are:
synthetics, fast fashion, light/white colours (after my colour analysis in Feb ‘23 highlighted I am deep warm colour way), light pants (underwear is always an issue), jeans without at least 1% elastane (prefer as much cotton as possible, but as a pear shaped, I need some stretch), no Oxford buttons up (they just never sit right on me), no knee high boots (heavy calves, always an issue for fit) and shoes that don’t allow my toes to spread and be comfortable- no high heels at all ! I think once you know your non-negotiables, it’s make choosing clothing so much easier. ❤

This is a helpful podcast! On my DNB list:
Things that look great on others (now that I know my style, body type & lifestyle needs)
Magpie shiny pretty things I do not need. I can appreciate from afar!
House decor that is not purposeful
    Excess kitchenware
    Excess linens
    Beauty product trials/minis
Gadgets (Bec I've happily lived without them)
    Snacks
    Heels
I think once we are conscious consumers, know our needs vs wants & our fashion needs, this becomes so much easier. I've become a minimalist over the last few years & it's a huge unlearning/learning process ...but worth the peace of mind & bank balance!

So many points resonated with me! The white button-up shirt: so cool and laid-back, the way Alyssa wears it, in her "undone" way; love it but never wear it! Another point that Alyssa brought up: buying something outside of our style identity while vacationing in another country; it feels right for where you are at that moment but, will you wear that when you're back home? Just NO! It doesn't matter where you are in the world! 😅
My no-buy list includes synthetic fibers. I'm trying to avoid them, as best I can, and this really narrows down my choices, given the price point I want to stay at, which actually makes it easier for me. I've started thrifting more as a result, so it ends up being a win-win!
Thanks for another fantastic podcast, ladies! I hope you're having a blast in London! ❤

I don’t buy the classic breton stripes (white/navy). My own coloring just does not support the contrast, and the same goes with all the beautiful brights
I don’t buy black, no matter how universally chic it is, it always makes me look tired.
I also don’t buy boring shoes - except for winter the options are not that exciting so l may have to stretch. In that case l most likely buy the ugliest ones which at least have a pov

This was a fun episode to listen to while I play with more minimal options in my wardrobe! I've made it a rule to just stop buying clothes altogether since I'm trying to lose weight. It's going to be a challenge, but I'd rather just wait until my weight is in a stable place to start buying new clothes for the new body I know I'm going to have eventually. Thanks for all that you do, ladies! 😊❤❤

Thanks again for an interesting podcast video! ❤ On my No Buy list I have added: no fast fashion items, no polyester or non sustainable fibres/ big patterns or flowers/ maxi jeans skirt / unflattering clothing which looks bulky on me. To end with choosing the wrong colours for my personal style. 😊

Maxi dresses and anything floral. Because I am 5’10, I tend to get sucked into buying things that are ‘tall’ that are outside my typical style. I need to make sure that the garment checks all the boxes - made for tall women AND is something that fits my style aesthetic.

I love the idea of no buy list. It would help when I get hyper fixated on something and end up with multiples. Or with things I declutter and retry. Would almost want to make a note of why I was decluttering especially if I do this multiple times.

Am I the only person in the world who likes wearing florals all year round 😢 The silhouette always has to be completely unfussy but I love prints. DNB black or grey tops. Pleated anything. Frills, bows, lace, neon, belts. Man-made fibres unless the item doesn't work any other way. Plastic in any area of life, where possible.

I learned early on that except for my wedding dress I am not a lace person. So I am with Christina on the fussy clothes. No to puffed sleeves and ruffles. And a BIG no to florals. I like striped and checked tops shirts. I do not wear skirts because my legs have become my worst feature over the years (77 now).
I do like a structured lady jacket and am enjoying the lady cardigan. Unfortunately my life is very casual and sporty in retirement. Need to schedule more lunches with friends to fully enjoy those types of garments.

My No Go list definitely includes overly feminine frills! I love clean lines and simplicity. Sadly, being quite pale, black near my face is also a no. I will wear pants and skirts in black, but really my dark neutrals are gray and blue/navy. I also avoid anything oversized, as I’m of average height with a curvier figure. Oversized just hides everything and adds width - no thank you. And absolutely no synthetics, which makes it difficult sometimes, but that’s okay with me.

I love using no buy list, I put on it items that I love, but already got enough, currently: no mew Levis jeans, knitwear and Dr Martens boots 😂😂 That’s to stop myself from overbuying. I enjoy keeping small wardrobe.

I can totally relate to Signe with the knee high boots and Christina with the Beige pants. I have given up on both too after trying multiple times with both. I too realized that the knee high boots are limiting, and since I don’t wear skinny jeans, and rarely wears skirts the only time I was wearing the boots was under pants , or wider jeans. But really what is the point of wearing a knee-high boot if they are hidden under pants? And also like Chrisitna, I have stopped wearing certain colours I now realize wash me out. Even though I love the colours they just don’t work with my skin undertone.

If I buy red it stays in the closet. I love burgundy, but I'm not sure it goes with my silver white hair. I use to love how it brought out my deep brown eyes.

    1. Don't buy black--it makes me look like a cadaver, 2. Don't buy white--it makes me look like a ghost, 3. Don't buy warm tones--they make me look jaundiced. Guess what? Pastels are my palette and they make me look my best, so stop dissing them. I enjoy the challenge of making my summer palette look cool and edgy (not a frill or bow in sight), and I challenge you all to do the same ;o)

I hear you Signe, tall boots are definitely on my do not buy list. I had a beautiful pair of leather Roots ones that I so wanted to love for eternity but they just never got comfortable. The second time I bought tall boots I was smart enough to buy them 2nd hand but alas, they too ended up not getting worn and donated back to the place I bought them from 🥲.

Brilliant! The do not buy list can also help guide decluttering the questionable wardrobe pieces … 🫶🏻the list pins the personal reasons why some pieces do or do not resonate ….and yes I the list helps getting the most mileage out of what is already had, not adding more.
