    With such a lightweight car, the rear shoes would normally be expected to last a long time. These had done 85k miles and were a little less than half worn. On this basis, you might expect shoes to last 160-200,000 miles but as can be seen, issues other than simple friction material wear can cause replacement.
    Unlike disc brakes, the dust in drum brakes is trapped inside the drum. There was a lot of dust and on this basis I would suggest that the drums are removed for a clean at least once a decade or every 75-100,000 miles.

      @@enemycrab9229 once you've got the rear drums apart, replacing the cylinders is a doddle. Have a look at this video on my son's old Polo. I remove and replace the cylinder in it. @@CycloneCyd I think until you have to change the rear wheel cylinders on this car yourself, I think you would take those words back. Yes looks very easy, and should be, but the cylinders are aluminium with steel brake pipes going to them, so what should be an easy job, turns out not to be, and an expensive one. Even with heat, flare spanners, releasing oil, then still the brake pipe nut to the cylinder rounds off, mole grips etc, you will end up having to cut the pipe and fitting a new brake pipe with the cylinder. Both my rear cylinders on my 07 plate C1 seized, and I found out all this then trying to change them. Seems common for the wheel cylinders seizing on these C1's.

    Excellently descriptive video as always thanks Cyd. I really struggled though with the adjuster spring that fastens to the leading shoe. It came off with this spring under the shoe as did yours but you replaced back on top of the shoe. It's only when I went back to check what I was doing wrong I noticed the difference. I'm supposing this doesn't matter because I really wanted it to go back as original but I'd probably need super powers to do that 🙄 or a special tool. Cheers 👍

    thank you for this. unfortunately for me the damn handbrake cables are slightly sticking and causing the brakes to very slightly bind & the MOT centre wont pass it. I have ordered new cables but have not found any online videos about changing this vehicles handbrake cables. I tried plusgas and wd40 on all brake drum components and spraying it in each end of the brake cable but it still sticks very slightly and the MOT centre refuses to pass it.

    • @CycloneCyd
      @CycloneCyd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's the drag figures from the roller tester? 10-15kg would be normal per wheel and as long as it isn't above 25kg per wheel they really should pass it. As you can see from the MoT manual there is no specific requirement for the 'drag' to be tested or noted and there is no stipulated maximum.
      Do let us know how you get on

      If it ain't broke, don't fix it. They could last the life of the car, 250,000 miles or more. It was probably my fault for not bleeding the brakes often enough. For a while I wasn't able to after an accident. Back on it now though.
