Andy Stewart's Greatest Hits

  • This medley from a TV appearance in 1984 includes a couple of Andy Stewart's most successful early 1960s recordings - 'A Scottish Soldier' and 'Donald Where's Your Troosers', along with 'Aberdeen' (where he's seen here on the stage of His Majesty's Theatre) and 'Tunes of Glory' (which Andy co-composed with Neil Grant). This is a tribute to the fondly remembered stalwart of Scotland's 'White Heather Club', who became an international celebrity through his popular singles and albums. Andy died in 1993, and Hogmanay has never been the same without him.

So much better than the 'entertainment' we have now. Just one man. No lights. Compare this to Eurovision for example - moving stages, collosal backscreens etc

I'm not a big fan of traditional songs or even bagpipe music but I love Andy Stewart. Traditional Irish songs are dull and lifeless in my opinion but Andy Stewart's song are lively and are some are jokes set to music, for want of a better phrase, with a punchline in the last line of the last verse.I was just about too young to remember his White Heather Club show at Hogmanay in the 70s(I'm 48) but my Dad says it was what made New Years Eve brilliant back then. Nowadays the BBC is the only channel that sees in the New Year and and it only lasts about 15 minutes,if you're lucky. I'm from Northern Ireland so maybe it's an Ulster Scotch thing.
