    I love that this is presented with such modesty when it is by far the most impressive tub build you are ever likely to see, the humility is as impressive as the build. The attitude of saying "I was more inspired than I was threatened" is good advice on how to create a good aptitude for anyone in any endeavour. Fantastic results and approach
    I have seen rocks with similar rocks discarded by quarries because cracks devalue them, sometimes you will see them spray painted with an orange box around the crack I guess so no one takes it by mistake. Really impressed by the repair and sure it hold out perfectly fine
    10/10

    • @jameslostlen
      @jameslostlen  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      Thank you so much! I do feel modest about it, at the end of the day I am just a curator and not the artist. I adore the natural beauty of the local stone here, and hope to make many more functional pieces that are modified just to the point of function. Maintaining the original skin and not over-polishing is something I hope to be known for. Appreciate the kind words on the crack, I think it will be ok! I would avoid using a piece with any cracks next time, I feel grateful to learn a valuable lesson without catastrophe. 🙏

      @jameslostlen  ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Wow, thank you! I think it’s the most beautiful I have seen too, but I am extremely biased! For me, I really enjoy the irregularities and unique shape, very unique and one in a million shape. When it was sitting upside down, I could not envision what I would do with it. Once I saw it as stone tub there was no other way to showcase the rock in my mind.

    great job and great video! Granite is a mix of quartz, feldspars, and micas. Quartz is a 7 on the Moh's hardness scale. @bigbattenberg ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In fact it is also used in hogging out metal blocks. Drilling is the most efficient operation.

      I know a lot of stone carvers and all use this method. That method sounds like the way to split, not selectively extract. I’d be all ears for a better method but I trust the guys that have done this for decades :)

    • @bigbattenberg
      @bigbattenberg ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jameslostlen I'd say core drilling would be the way to go. The advantage of stone over metal with (blind hole) core drilling is that with the former, the core can be removed by breaking it off. One thing however is that for (deep) drilling operations a solid clamping surface is required. Like a metal plate with pre-cut guide holes temporarily expoxied in place or something similar? Depending on the drilling machine interface obviously.

    Not sure how this blew up so fast but congratulations! I hope to see more inspired projects like this! Would you do anything differently? I’m wondering if a large sandstone boulder would work or not.

    • @jameslostlen
      @jameslostlen  ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The algorithm gods have smiled upon me :) I would use a bigger saw, and cut more like the last long slices you see later in the video, cubes are not necessary. Learned a lot and tooled up quite a bit during this. I’m not sure sandstone would be rigid enough or hold water but I am very unfamiliar with it other than lake Powell and rock climbing in red rocks…

    • @09conrado
      @09conrado ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sandstone would need a sealant for else it would run dry in half an hour or more, depending on the type of sandstone

    Looks really cool! Are you worried about moisture getting to the rebar and thus making it rust? When rebar rusts it expands and might push the rock apart from the inside. I hope the epoxy will protect it 😅

    • @georgematys
      @georgematys ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I too said the same. Hopefully the epoxy acts as an insulator. Very impressive though!

    • @jameslostlen

      Good point, I used quite a bit of epoxy so i do feel confident that the bar was fully coated with 1/8" all around... to be sure I would use stainless next time. I certainly learned a lot on this project and upgraded just about every tool involved at least one time during the course of carving and grinding.

    Just remember one thing. I have worked with stones. Stones have two properties. 1 warm stones 2 cold stones The biggest problem with cold stones. They are fragile. But the warm stone is very resistant to temperature fluctuations. I will give you and others advice on how to find warm stones. On the day when the stone heats up in the sun. Heat stones after nights to morning easily Heat. Where morning water condensation does not form. And the animals stay in the warm rocks. To warm up until dawn. The second cold rocks at dawn formed water condensate. Cool condensation formed on a cold night. But it can be found more easily at night with a heat meter. At night, the meter shows a pink indicator. Depends on the sensor.
