Creating functional art with stone and metal. I hope to inspire others to better understand nature by using organic and minimally modifying objects, stopping at the point of functionality.
Making a Stone Chair
STONE THRONE
2023
James Lostlen
Granite with Aplite intrusions
Fabrication and Installation of a 2 ton granite chair made from a single boulder. While excavating on my property for a pool, I found a large boulder that I thought would make the perfect chair. I had first envisioned this to be a Victorian love seat, discovered some constraints on the width of the stone so I opted to make it a throne. This decision better preserved the natural characteristics of this rock, and who doesn't want a throne on their property!?
The fieldstone walls were assembled using the rocks from a nearby trenching project, and span over 250 ft. I ran lights behind the wall to create a glowing effect through the negative space between the stones.
This was another large project that I completed bit by bit over the course of a few months. The stone throne is installed in the backyard of my property, immediately adjacent to the live fire grills, creating a beautiful backdrop while cooking with friends and family. It makes a wonderful transition from civilization into the native landscape of national monument surrounding the property.
PS I upgraded my mic and turned up the VO volume, hopefully that prevents the comments from being dominated with comments like “I'm really angry because I can’t hear you!”

Making a Stone Tub -
มุมมอง 2.8Mปีที่แล้ว
I designed, carved, and installed a 25000 granite boulder tub that holds around 250 gallons of water. Complete process from excavation to installation. This project took around 7 weeks of labor, over the course of 6 months. can you put a fire next to it and heat up the rock?
does it heat in the sun ? that would be a cool way of having a hot water tub cause i know rocks tend to keep their heat for a long time
You’re amazing ❤ 😢 I would die for something like this. Wow how awesome
Very cool labor of love! Bravo!
Sitting in a nutshell 😂
Ето долги протсес требуется огромное желание и терпение не каждый смог сделать.удачи
In Morongo Valley eh? I grew up in Yucca.
Yes, born and raised here... love this little town
Quartz is a 7 on Moh's scale. 8 and higher are gemstones (per definition gemstones are harder than quartz). The hardness of granite varies depending on the included minerals and their ratio. In general they are considered to be the same hardness as quartz. But your hot rock tube is awesome.
Thank you
everyone should have one of these
30 seconds in i was like "holy shit i want that". at the end of the video i was like "eh i don't want it that bad".
haha It was a journey and very challenging
I don’t know how I missed this.. That must have been Soooooo much work. Its amazing dude.
thanks so much! it was a lot but so rewarding
I’d like to know how it works as a tub of hot water. So much mass in the rock that it would stay hot a long time if hot water was put when the rock is also hot but if not…?
So beautiful! Congratulations 👏👏👏👏👏
thanks!
New life foal unlocked
Fascinatingly unbelievable project, bravo! Who were your colleagues you mentioned at 4:50?
Than you! on IG they @carvesrock and @stebbinsdesign
Great project. Makes me think of building one myself. 💧 I saw at a resort spa in Ischia Italy a rock hot tub that had a hot and cold basin around the base of the hot tub with small stones that would self massage your feet. It could accent your masterpiece.
Nice. Too bad in ca we crush rock to make gravel. San Diego. Vulcan.
it really is a sad thought of the amazin boulders that are now gravel!
@jameslostlen yeah the mine is easy or San Diego just north of the border wall. Mammoth was found in the area not long ago But if anything it all gets crushed Flattened and new housing.
It really needs a base to remain level. Overtime it will settle. But awesome project and awesome work!
The stone age is back.
Dude this would sell for so much
This rocks!
Wow that tub is hard as a rock
What kind of blades and grinding wheels did you use for this project?
Diamond segmented to cut, makita work great. Aggressive diamond cup wheels to remove, Ediamondtools makes some good ones, red and or black wheels
Exactly the sort of ideas I come up with as well. I love it bro. Nailed it
Wow spatacular
Just stunning
That is a lot of work. I commend you for a job well done.
Wow! Respect and congratulations. :) I know what such hard and messy work is like. I admire the result. :)
i ❤rocks
Gette lost and gette proper job
bro doing that shit with no ppe
!!!!!!!!!🎉😊
Dude I’d buy this off you!
I wonder how much slime gross in it after a while
Am I supposed to believe a 19 year old punk did this work? Lol 😆 you're a bullshitter jimmy
Lexa poor thing
someone will find this in 5000 years and think it was some kind of holy site
You ever see the documentary about the guy in Lone Pine who built a swimming pool out of a piece of granite?
I have seen the pool, amazing! What’s the documentary called?
@ The Oyler House Richard Nuetras desert retreat. 2014. Really cool.
Sexiest tub NA
Aliens…
How come you didn't use chisel and hammer like the Egyptians did???
Wild how good the ancients were at cutting granite. Pre k levels these days…
...nice...
youtube is taking over control of my HID's. Every tab opened to a youtube page is taking control of my human input devices. My mouse won't become visible on a youtube page until an echo is received from silicon valley, I assume. This causes tabs to become active long after I'd given up on watching that video and started browsing on a different tab. Control should be given back to the local operating system. NOT SILICON VALLEY!
Stunning🥰🤗❣️❣️❣️
Wait until the liberal climate change freaks find out you turned a stone into a hot tub. They will be protesting outside your house 😂
Wow. I love your love of stones! Stones are so amazing and beaitiful and so are your amazing creations. Any more to share? I hope your ears are ok after all that machinery noise.
Thank you, yes soon! I had a collection of lamps that I’ve been working on for a year :)
Did anyone ask this Boulder if it wanted to be out of the ground?
Hmm. Wonder what tools the Egyptians used to carve out their sarcophagus and coffins . . .
Me too, it is a very curious topic
i like how he has a convenient bean er there working for him lmao. something tells me youre australian though. so aboriginese? lmao
