    After seeing the TH-cam videos comparing the Hue vs LIFX, I was confused of what to buy. So, I bought both lights on 10/1/2017. I can confidently say that the HUE lights were very weak compared to LIFX. There is no comparison, the LIFX were 10 times better. I immediately returned the HUE light strip. Save your time and take my word for it!

      I was a non-believe also because I thought Philip is a bigger well-known company compared to LIFX, but the LIFX are so so much better that it is worth it! I appreciate your videos....but I had to compare for myself. Regards!

    I have 3 hue strips plus (2nd gen), and they are really bright. 1600 lumens is no joke. I'm seriously wondering if your light strip was defective in this review. It outright contradicts what I see everyday. I'm very happy with them.

    • @AmandaWoolsey
      @AmandaWoolsey  7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Please read title this is the 'PLUS' version not the OG 1st gen. There is nothing wrong with mine lol they are bright when on by themselves. You only notice how dim when compared to the Lifx strip. Buy them and test yourself and then you can see or watch other videos

      My Hue Gen 2 strips are hella bright. It can pretty much light up my whole man cave with a single strip. Maybe a bad strip like Derek mentioned? I Don't have a Lifx to compare but the Hue Gen 2 Strip is way brighter than it appears on video.

    • @AmandaWoolsey
      @AmandaWoolsey  7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Luis Alegria I wrote other tech TH-camrs on twitter to ask if their experience to see if I had a bad strip. They all replied that Lifx strips and bulbs are much brighter than Hue. They confirmed to me my strip is a-ok

  • @rodiape
    @rodiape 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    is there something like hue play for LIFX, the one that changes the color of the strip according to what its on your monitor?

  • @Ben-mj1br
    @Ben-mj1br 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    You may notice that on the hue light strip there are three LEDs close together for every LED cluster thing. On the lifex strip, there are only two LEDs in a cluster. This gives the hue strip many more color options, and is also the reason why you couldn’t get a warm yellowish white on the lifex. Also, I own both the hue light strip plus (2nd generation) and the lifex light strip, and I find the hue to be much much brighter than lifex. I think you may have gotten a 1st generation hue strip by accident or the product was damaged.

      I was going to, but one of them will be for my wife's desk area, and she likes the multi-color action on the LIFX, so I'll probably go with them. They say they'll have Homekit support in Q1 2017, so multiple apps will only be a temporary annoyance.

    Great comparison, Amanda. I have a couple of the LIFX Z strips, and I personally love the fact that you can have multiple colors on one strip. The 'scenes' are so pretty.
    Just to note, a LIFX employee confirmed on Reddit that the current version of the LIFX Z won't be compatible with HomeKit, unfortunately. :(

  • @Jumogoh

    I am using hue because it's way easier to get in Europe. Hue is very bright. Can't imagine that LIFX is brighter. But it is. I think hue is bright enough when it comes to everyday usage. You will get lucky with both of them. You only have to decide which one you will use. Because if you decided wrong in the first place it is very expensive to change your mind later.
    Thank you for the great video. Thumbs up :-)

    Hi there, I only need about 2 bulbs and maybe a lightstrips for my bedroom but I'm not sure what to get. Lifx or Hue?! I won't be expanding to elsewhere in my house and only need the bulbs. What do you think I should get?!

  • @Halbmond
    @Halbmond 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Besides HomeKit integration, there's another really big advantage to Hue: the huge ecosystem. Philips has a ton of different lights and lamps, and Osram Lightify has others still (no HomeKit there, though). You can even link your Hue lights to an Ambilight TV!
    And, big advantage: Philips' got light switches. I've installed one of the dimmable light switches into my kitchen, and I can switch and dim the task lights on the ceiling, the light strip below the wall shelf, and the pendant lamp above my dinner table all using the same light switch. And I can even program scenes into it, so one press is bright lighting, two presses is a dinner setting. LIFX can't do that. I love Alexa, but sometimes a light switch is the fastest way to control lights, particularly multiple lights.
    I've also got some LIFX bulbs though. Their app was THE WORST when it launched (backed it on Kickstarter) but it has gotten a long way since then! With Alexa I can even mix Hue and LIFX, although Alexa can't use light scenes in that setup yet.

    great overview Amanda! Really like my LIFX Z strips better to be honest. I wish you mentioned how stiff the LIFX Z is compared to Hue. Having it be super stiff is a little upsetting :/

    • @AmandaWoolsey
      @AmandaWoolsey  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Amanda,
    great vid thank you. Question- for LifeX, you don't need a hub or source right? With P Hue, you need a bridge or switch, dimmer, etc.
    With LifeX, is it just the lights and the smartphone app? That must mean there's a bluetooth/wireless signal/receiver in the light strip itself...??

    For me, Hue wins, mostly because I have an existing hub and several bulbs, and use the light strip as behind the tv accent lighting - along with a couple of blooms and a hue bulb - also worth noting is the huge after market app support for hue - you can do way more with free and cheap apps than the hue app lets you!

    I develop embedded light controllers and I do have to say that LIFX Z looks and behaves a lot like generic WS8212B light strip you can get for half the price (with WiFI controller and PSU). The only thing that seems to be differentiating it (apart from proprietary connector) is extra White LED beside every WS8212B RGB LED placed to mitigate undesired rainbow effect when reproducing natural light and white unfortunately with poor result making LIFX Z unsuitable as a source of natural light should you get tired with colours. I have to admit however that Hue's reproduction of natural light appears to be much higher quality (and brighter since thats what they base their Lumen rating on).
    Its also worth noting that Hue lights use open and low-power Zigbee communication standard for their lights and every device automatically extends the range creating a Mesh network between other Zigbee devices so its generally architected to be an extensible system allowing mix and matching of products from different manufacturers. LIFX on the other side communicates directly over WiFi meaning that you rely on your router/access point to be the base station providing range translating to lower entry price but also implying range limitation and additional cost should you want to install LIFX light source someplace a bit more out of the way.
    The thing however that's putting me off LIFX however is that every bulb connects directly to WiFi and has full access to internet creating a big security vector once installed. Its only been couple of months since we seen Mirai botnet disabling a good part of US internet infrastructure and it consisted mainly of IPCameras and smart devices just like these. I believe LIFX does their best to make sure that all of their bulbs stay updated and secure but its something worth keeping in mind.

      Agreed Ninetou, I think it makes sense to stick with Zigbee Light Link devices. I really don't want to add another WiFi connection for every light bulb?! The Hue bridge is very reliable. I have some connection issues with other Homekit devices... but the Hue bridge keeps ticking along doing what it's meant to do - control my lights.

    This is really helpful. I am planning to buy the Hue and an extension. It really annoys me that you need a hub to be able to change the colours because honestly that should just be included shouldnt it? I think on that basis I might actually just buy a fairly budget LED strip because it is probably going to be more cost effective.
    I hadnt heard about the LIFX so i will look into those

    • @crumppetz3518
      @crumppetz3518 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I disagree. I think that the ability to change the colour of the strips (which If I am correct can only be done with the hub) is a fairly basic feature. In fact maybe we agree because I don't think that does qualify as a 'smart setup' and as such it would be much better if there was no requirement for a hub to be able to change the colour at all.
      I have to buy a light strip and extension to cover the distance i need it to cover, which is reasonably expensive and then if I want to be able to change the colour its another chunk of cash. I dont want to have the colour changing bulbs as i really only want the light strips, so I think for my purposes it sounds like it will be better off going for another product because spending £90 for an LED strip that I cant change the colour of seems a bit much.

      +Darren Mason Hi, thanks!
      Yes Lifx works with ST, tho I've never used it bc I don't have a hub. You can find out info about it here support.smartthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/205956530-How-to-connect-LIFX-light-bulbs
      Lifx bulbs can be turned on by a switch on your wall bc they plug into a normal socket but I don't know if any way to control any brand of led strip by a wall socket.

    • @jonnathanmarcellus
      @jonnathanmarcellus 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you are just going to decorate one room, go LIFX. If you are going to do a house do Hue. Hue has the hub so all the lights connect to that, and the hub will connect to Alexa. Every single LIFX light has to connect to the Alexa individualy.

    Great Review thanks for creating this, I love my Hue lights but its clear that LIFX is better from your video, Hopefully Hue will improve their strips or if only LIFX had accessories like the Hue does. I have elderly family members who can't use mobile devices so the accessories like the Hue Dimmer Switch help a great deal. Awesome Vid, Thanks for taking the time to do this :)

    Is there an ability to turn on or off the strip with a switch? I want to put these under cabinets, but would like to not always have my phone and allow the rest of my family able to turn on and off with it a phone/tablet. Awesome review, very helpful.

      I’m certainly no wiring expert but I imagine you can wire a switch to an outlet. I know sometimes have a light switch that controls electrical outlets. I’d pick up a google home mini/echo dot for voice control or there are even other things like the Logitech pop (or cumulative cheaper options) out there. Good luck!

    Hey, lately I am after buying some LED STRIPS. There are plenty of cheap and long LED strips on the market and they come with 4 pin or 6 pin connector. I am wondering, if I bought a Philips LED Strip or a LIFX Led strips and at the end of it, I connect it with 3rd party LED Strips to max 10m. Will it works ?

    • @AmandaWoolsey
      @AmandaWoolsey  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ThreeMinuteHeat / 三分鐘熱度 I believe there may be some videos specifically covering this for Hue. I know the Lifx will not as they have an irregular connection. Hue I think might work

    • @ThreeMinuteHeat
      @ThreeMinuteHeat 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Irregular connection meaning the shape? or because is 4 pin? For some reason, I found there are more 4 pins ones, then the 6 pins

    Having bought bulbs and strips for both the Lifx and Hue systems, it was immediately apparent to me that I am in fact... a Lifx man. Their lights fill the room with vibrant and wildly customizable colors. The strip is gorgeous especially when displaying multiple colors. Full intensity white is BRIGHT! No connection issues to report yet. I wanted to like it but the light from the Hue barely hit the ceiling from the bed. Very muted in comparison and not nearly as poppin' phresh.
